Can the Model X be driven with the falcon doors open?

Can the Model X be driven with the falcon doors open?

Indulge me this silly question, friends--

If full wings raised = 100%, I'm curious if the doors can be raised to any fraction between 0 and 100% and held at that position while driving. I'm picturing a control option to open similar to the Pano roof. I'm also curious if the doors are strong enough to hold the weight of someone hanging on to it. The hinges on the Falcon Wing look really beefy.

Here's one that can be driven while open. It's Elon's inspiration, the AMG Gullwing:

Can any SUV open it's sliding side doors while driving. I don't know of one.
Falcon Wing Doors will not open while X is in drive...it's too dangerous.

Wasn't there a photo at the 9/29/15 event showing an X moving with FWD open? Surprising, if true.

I'd think that the doors would be locked closed for safety.

Not a Model X but Elon's inspiration, the AMG Gullwing:

I was at the reveal and did see the FWDs open with the vehicle moving while Ibwas in line for a test ride.It was moving very slowly. I should have paid more attention. I asked the driver many questions but that was not one of them.
Probably a good question to ask Mark now that he is posting about his experience with a Founders X.

The wings are supported with 'beefy' struts but I do not think you can safely hang on them..,..

As AIMc indicated the doors were left up during loading and unloading at the reveal test drive event. The cars unloaded passengers then moved forward a hundred feet, with both doors up, to load the next test drive passengers.

The Model S can be driven with the rear hatch up and can also be driven with the driver or passenger door open. I don't see any reason the X could not be driven with the doors up. You may need ear plugs to deal with the door open warning chime.

What is the take off speed with wings out?

Also could be handy for the X wave, flip both doors = happy, Lh = sad, RH =mind the pole

@Evino, The doors can be forced closed manually similar to how the powered rear hatch on the Model S can be forced closed. At the reveal I manually pushed the display car doors back to full open after people manually pulled them down a few inches.

The doors don't lock open. They are held by an actuator that can be manually over ridden with light amounts of force. No different than the powered rear hatch on the Model S.

Roamer, are you sure you can drive the S with the driver door open? I tried to back up once and opening the door shifted it into park. Might have been an early software limitation, I have not tried it since.

Roamer@AZ USA | 13 december 2015

@Redmiata98, If you lift you butt off the seat the car shifts into park.

More than once I have neglected to select park and experienced the car rolling forward with the door open.

Roamer@AZ USA | 13 december 2015

Not to get too long winded but if you do not have your seatbelt on and lift off the seat the car shifts into park. If you have your belt on and keep weight in the seat the door can be opened and the car will drive.

My wife had to learn to put her seatbelt on before backing out of the garage. When she would lift up and look back the car would shift into park. She learned over time to just buckle her seat belt and use the rear view camera. Problem solved.

I saw a video recently this guy was on his private property and he was in the back seat and the vehicle was driving it self without any body in the front seats..

Red Sage ca us | 14 december 2015

Yes. It can be driven with the Falcon Wing Doors open. Numerous videos showed that happening at the Launch Event.

georgehawley.fl.us | 15 december 2015

Yes, it can be driven slowly with the FW doors open but requires FAA clearance for anything over 10 mph, especially if you start flapping them.

(Attempt at humor.)

If you drive with the doors open, make sure the rear spoiler is fully extended!
