I think we need a thread to discuss the new roadster for 2015!!

I hope this is the ultimate machine! I thought we should have a list of must haves
1) I for one would like to see a back seat
2) good size trunk or frunk or both
3) I would like a 0-60 sub 3 secs
4) similar or better range to the model S 85k
5) suicide doors (ok, maybe just an option)
6) full screen
7) Exotic body style
8) bright racing style colors
9) AWD?

Retractable hardtop, and in the spirit of performance it should retract raise or lower faster than anything else on the marked (I think a Miata is about 11 seconds).

The first thing you need is a realistic date for the new Roadster.

I believe that when built, the new Roadster will be on the GenIII platform, not on the Model S. Since the GenIII is not expected until 2016 or 2017, I would not expect to see a Roadster until at least 2018 and that may be pushing it.

I'd be perfectly happy with keeping it a two-seater. Roadsters in general (not necessarily the Tesla Roadster specifically) are intended as fun-to-drive sports cars rather than practical utilitarian vehicles. Tesla's choice to use a roadster form factor for their proof-of-concept first vehicle was to shock the system with an all-electric vehicle that holds its own, both in looks and specs, next to other "dream cars" typically seen on college dorm posters, straddled by women in bikinis.

Models S and X are more practical, though they keep that sports-performance edge that will likely remain Tesla's reputation 20 or 30 years from now, when electric cars are the norm. But, we'll still want a car to daydream about, that looks really cool but is hard to get in and out of.

Let's look at what is technically possible given all Tesla already has and let a new Roadster exploit that:
- 4wd using Model X configuration
+ optimal traction
+ ~850 horsepower from 2 motors combined (assuming battery could provide)
+ stretch goal 1: use 4 sprung motors with optimal electronically controlled differential, yaw, regenerative braking, and traction control.
+ stretch goal 2: use an Ultracapacitor to enable short, extremely high power bursts while main Li-ion battery provides main power
- All cooling provided with Model S to enable sustained hard driving
- Carbon fiber body to reduce weight
- Might as well use the Model S chassis. It is already built and is highly optimized.
- Minimize all unnecessary luxury to "simplicate, then add lightness" [per Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus Motors] for a performance version to turn automobile industry upside down.
- Add luxury features to a different version to make lots of money from elite buyers.

Personally, I say keep it simple. Raise the body just enough to provide room for slinging the battery below. Use all the best technological improvements developed over the past years' experiments and experience with the Roadster for the S-Type and go with that. The lower battery will improve handling. Higher chassis and lower battery will increase trunk and interior space. Don't get fancy. You'll have a winner.

(1) T-top best of both worlds
(2) 0-60 in 3s range isn't a necessity
(3) Fun > Performance
(4) AWD can use the computer to limit the horsepower in a Eco/mileage mode
(5) Very unique body style
(6) Built for purpose interior
(7) Try to make it cheap-ish like a Porsche Boxster price-tag maybe uper model 370z starting price if possible

My ideal Roadster 2 would be simple, as Gery said. Battery below and rear wheel drive, just like the S. Two seats. Small overall size. Performance similar to the first Roadster is fine, as is range (though I'd happily take more than that).

But it needs to be a convertible. Not just a detachable roof panel but a true convertible, in the manner of a Boxster or an Austin-Healey.

I would like the following changes, 4-5 inches taller roofline, fender line the same, seats further to the outside, higher seating position. Both will make it easier to get in and out but not detract from the appearance.

Move up the black bars (speed bump scrapers) at the front and rear of the car closest to the ground, and make them from something flexible.

Another couple inches of length in the back for more trunk space.

More reliable PEM cooling, either water cool or better fan and inlet screen for fan.

Bigger touch screen, maybe 1/2 size of Model S.

Improved radio reception, built in internet connection like model S

Cruse control that reset the speed after a stop (like Model S)

HVAC that lets you set temperature (like model S)

Update battery and PEM with latest parts so weight is reduced, offsetting the other changes and allowing the same 0-60 time and similar or better range as the original.

A roadster, by definition, is a 2-seater with a retractable and/or removable top.

A 2+2 is not technically a sports car, but a GT (Grand Touring).

The wheelbase of the Gen2 platform (S/X) is too long for a roadster, and the Gen3 (E) platform is pushing it.

HOWEVER the relatively long wheelbase of the Gen3 platform will allow for a REALLY LOW roofline on a roadster, with plenty of interior space. The only limit to how far back the cabin can be placed on this frame, given a very short rear overhang, is that the rear deck needs to be longer than the roof, so the roof panel can retract straight back.

IF this new roadster is based on the Gen3 platform it does not have to be near as expensive as the original Roadster, so in the interest of keeping purchase price at a reasonable level its body should be aluminum. Carbon fiber bodies, perhaps with a different look, can be offered on a more premium version later on.

If you want a sporty little Tesla with a back seat, well, perhaps there will be a Model E coupe and convertible.

AWD? No reason not to have it as an option.

I've been working on some concepts for Tesla Motors since the beginning of July. Tired of trying to guess which letter might be used for which model, I've decided to start giving them names. Will the new roadster be called the 'Model R'? Perhaps, but for now I'll call this concept 'Jalapeño':

Before anyone says anything about the side inlets making it look too much like a Lotus, I've already noticed that and have found an interesting and unique solution for that feature. In this sketch I have also not made the wheelbase long enough... It is a work in progress.

I only saw one mention of the display. I think a 17 inch screen will give it that hi tech feel, very important in a sports car in my opinion. Competitors will not be able to match that.

Such a shame, but I clearly understand that the market demand is for more practical vehicles. But I really think the "mother ship" X needs an appropriate shuttle craft (think Roadster) to complete the "package".

@sosmerc, that seems to be the general thought, but I don't think we have much definitive information on it. We know the big goal is Model E mass production and the gigafactory to support that push. We know that a sports car is going to be made on the same Gen3 skateboard, and that's expected to be after the Model E.

I asked in the general forum if it had to be that way - I'm wondering both whether they've definitely said that the sports car will be after, and also whether there's any sense or potential in making it before. @BrianH is positive it will be after, I think it's possible they won't have the battery quantity they'll need to do it in that order, but that's all guesswork.

Hopefully Tesla listens to those of us who have driven 10s of thousands of miles in a Roadster. I agree with most of the suggestions that started this forum, except it shouldn't be a mini-Model S. Sports cars have only 2 seats! There's no leg room in a Nissan or Mazda sports car with rear seats. I certainly want it to have:
1. Great looks and a wide variety of color options--inside and out.
2. Increased acceleration capability.
3. Increased range--enough to justify having supercharger capability. With that comes the need for more trunk space.
4. Increased elbow room and wider/longer seats.
5. Improved safety: ability to sound the horn using the middle of the steering wheel, which no longer hides the gauges; a windshield that doesn't fog up and streak so easily, especially inside; power side view mirrors; Bluetooth phone connectivity that one can actually use on the road.
6. Better cooling for the PEM, battery and motor, so it's not stolen from the cabin A/C.
7. A high-tech dash/display appropriately sized for a sports car (17" is too big).
8. Nice-to-haves: control buttons on the steering wheel; 2 cup holders that actually hold larger cups during turns and inertia changes; an electric retractable hard top.

AWD for sure. My old 3000GT VR/4 might have been a 2+2 rather than a 2-seater, but the AWD makes a difference when you are using your vehicle as an all-season car in the snowy north. My Roadster is making it through the snow in VT so far, but I'd rather have AWD!

If they are going to build a new Roadster, it probably won't be till 2018-2019 at the mere earliest for range and Gen3 motor platform. If they do, they should redesign the whole car (sorry for those who disagree with me) but I'd prefer for it have its own identity instead of looking like a Lotus Evora/Elise electric child. They should have an option for AWD, pulled from the Model X, and an adjustable suspension. A retractable hardtop convertible. I'm hoping the infotainment system is smaller but yet similar to the model S/X. You're driving a sport car, not a luxury car I'm sorry you don't need a massive touchscreen in the center of your car. A 9" rectangle wouldn't be bad and if they wanted to keep with touch screen adapt buttons for other controls then be my guest. Duel climate control would be nice and somewhat necessary to be competitive in the market. Aux cord and USB plug in stations are a common need that should be in the car regardless of what trim you buy it in. Maybe, and this is a big maybe, a 2+2 seat system, but depending on how that looks it may be a do or don't situation. The range has to be 500miles at the bare minimum. The main reason people don't buy electric cars is because they are afraid of be stranded. That is also the case of just getting charging stations as accessible as the common gas station but that will take time. A 10 speaker Bose or Karmon/Harding (sorry if names are misspelled or wrong) sound system would be appreciated with some decent subwoofers... I love me some bass when I drive. Safety features such as adaptive cruise control, blindspot warning, and... well, just look at the Infinite Q50 and you'll get the picture. A holographic or digital dashboard would be suitable as well, like the Model X and I believe S. The inside would be nice with a high quality cloth option (I'm sorry I don't want another 1st degree burn on my legs like in my friends Acura, and I just am not a leather chair fan in general). A piano black alloy or chrome/titanium accent would look cool I think or the same color accent material as the outside of your car. A center consol compartment rather optional or standard, regenerative breaking system, maybe some form of a solar panel panoramic hardtop (?) Maybe:) road adaptive LED headlights, probability of that being a standard not likely but as an option. A competitively sized trunk in the back, the front is what it is. And finally, just as a random thing, a Bluetooth system. I find myself missing a lot of calls when I'm driving and a cellphone port for charging (would fit in with the USB and AUX cable stuff)

Yes, its own design and most of the other ideas are just expected an cars today. A relatively conservative design, nothing like cartoon-swoopy. This sells the most of them.

And we won't see this for years and years. Too far behind on a million projects already.

I do not see Tesla coming out with a Roadster replacement before 2020 if ever. If the goal is for mass EV adoption then a sports car is a diversion. Pickup trucks out sell sports cars by over 10 to 1. If we are to make progress on sustainable transportation a pickup is far more important.

If you want an electric sports car there are many fine Roadster s to be had.

Taller? Higher seating position? Please, no. I really like the Roadster seating position, especially with the short nose. It's not an SUV, and it shouldn't feel like one.

Similarly, the no-power steering is a good thing. The steering on Model S is pretty good, but I haven't felt anything nearly as wonderful as the Roadster steering since a friend let me drive her Austin-Healey.

Elon *HAS* recently said something to the effect of "we believe electric cars are superior to gas cars." (Semi-quote)

What better way to bring the general awareness/acceptance of this fact than to produce a car that pulverizes the highest-end production cars available?

In other words, so that the world's dream machines are no longer gas guzzling dinosaurs from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani, Bugatti.... But rather from Tesla (and certainly those companies will quickly start playing catch-up).

So yes, I vote for an extreme Supercar, even worthy of the moniker Ultracar or Hypercar. Crush the best that gas can deliver. Absolutely crush it.

I'm sorry but I just can't say that I like the FT-1 styling. Way to complex lines that may grab your attention the first glance but you soon get tired when looked at it for a while. Kind of like a pizza with six kind of cheeze and eight kind of meat. I'd rather Tesla will not go this route but continue the Model S less is more clean design philosophy to for the new Rodster.

Well, they did it already...

There was a time when a 'Supercar' was anything at all that was street legal and could achieve a 0-60 time under 5.5 seconds. Then 5.0... Followed by 4.5... And it sat there for a long time, until it was obvious that so-called 'sports sedans' had caught up. And people wondered what the point was of paying $250,000... $500,000... or $1,000,000+... for a car that was matched step-for-step on the track by a Chevrolet Corvette, or BMW M5.

So the goal post was moved to sub-4.0... And many stalled there. Then they were matched by a little electric car by a startup company from California.

So they raised their prices even further, lightened up their cars that much more, used even more exotic materials, pumped up the horsepower through the stratosphere, achieved a European fuel economy rating of 'G', and built cars that were thoroughly impractical for daily driving, but could get you to 60 MPH in less than 3.0 seconds, on a cool, clear, calm day at sea level, if you were a professional driver on a closed course and could manage to launch it just... right.

Won't it be really cool when a Tesla Model Z Supercar arrives and blows their doors off again?

One thing for sure... It won't have more then two seats!

A roadster is almost defined now as a two seater. As others have said, it will be on the 3 platform. Hopefully it is a lower cost, lighter, two motor version that goes faster then the old roadster but is not aiming for supercar status (and supercar pricing).

The roadster could actually come FIRST as it would be a higher profit car (and higher price) then the 3 and if they are still battery limited they would make more money that way.

It would be great if the new Roadster was $50000 or so and competing with the BMW 4 series convertible.
