########## OFFICIAL 60 Minutes Tesla Discussion Thread ##########

Since the U.S. Eastern and Central time zones will see the 60 Minutes broadcast an hour before Mountain and 2 hours before Pacific time zones, let's try and keep all comments here after viewing. This way those watching later will not have any spoilers revealed before they get a chance to watch for themselves. Alternatively, if later viewers prefer, they can choose to read the earlier comments in anticipation of the show.

Pop the corn, open a beer, and enjoy the show.

carlk | 30. März 2014

OK I'll stay away from the forum form 5PM on since I'm in the Pacific time zone.

EmperorTytus | 30. März 2014

Mountain time zone here. Trying to ignore forum...

hcwhy | 30. März 2014

NCAA basketball is trumping 60 Minutes so far here in the East. I was afraid of this. Hope the basketball ends before it knocks the Tesla segment off.

hcwhy | 30. März 2014

7:20 EDT It's on.

tes-s | 30. März 2014

60 minutes starting on the East Coast now. Tesla is second segment. Great end to the Kentucky-Michigan game!

Red Rover | 30. März 2014

Just Great!

borodinj | 30. März 2014

Great piece. Just one question...why the engine noise watching the Model S accelerate???

AndyO | 30. März 2014

Fantastic! They didn't skewer him! They just showed his brilliance and sincere intent.

P85D | 30. März 2014

Even though it would be sweet if it was a whole segment on the Model S, my guess it's going to be more about Elon.

Red Rover | 30. März 2014

I missed the engine noise, caught up with watching the car.

Nuts4MS | 30. März 2014

I was thinking the same thing about the engine noise! My way wife mentioned that as well and I was like Hmmmmmmmm...

Plugged In | 30. März 2014

They seemed to spend more time on SpaceX than Tesla. A bit disappointed about that.

And I bet the engine noise was of the CBS vehicle doing the film of the car.

But it was a positive piece.

dumbgrill | 30. März 2014

wow....couldn't have been more Tesla friendly! The truth is they deserve it. I'm so used to defending Tesla from stupid articles and biased journalists that i sometimes lose touch with how amazing the achievements of the company are. I know the story was about Elon....but i do hope in the future Tesla can learn to highlight other people in the company. Elon is obviously a very cool guy, and the cult of personality ala Steve Jobs is fine if that is what helps market everything initially....but long term Tesla is better served showing more than one face

choots.humphries | 30. März 2014

My 10-year old daughter loved every bit of it (as did I), but her first observation was 'What's up with the engine noise?' I responded it must be the ICE car with the camera! :)

Brilliant man and it all showed through!

PapaSmurf | 30. März 2014
cwarner | 30. März 2014

I am surprised they did not mention the efforts of various car dealer associations (such as in NJ) to prevent them from selling cars.

PapaSmurf | 30. März 2014

On that link there are segment extras beyond what was on TV.

PapaSmurf | 30. März 2014

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/tesla-and-spacex-elon-musks-industrial-empire/

There are four addition segments on the website. I cannot directly link to the segments, they are on the right side of the page.

P85D | 30. März 2014

Link sponsored by Viagra LOL.

carlk | 30. März 2014

SP Hmmm I'm trying to figure out something to do before the show is up (sorry) in 1 1/2 hours.

LEvans | 30. März 2014

I was going to DVR it and totally forgot I want to watch it but the link on the CBS Web site has no full screen option Seriously, how backwards can CBS get to not have a full screen button on their video player?

Anyone know of a way to watch the Tesla episode in full screen mode?

PapaSmurf | 30. März 2014

The zombie apocalypse warranty.

The 60 minutes reporter, Scott Pelley, revealed that his wife owns a Tesla Model S. This was a puff piece commercial for Tesla and SpaceX. Nothing bad at all.

PapaSmurf | 30. März 2014

I saw it in full screen mode on my PC. It seemed easy to me.

LEvans | 30. März 2014

Nevermind There was no full screen button in Internet Explorer but the same link has a video player with a full screen option under Chrome.

Just got done watching "The Revenge of the Electric Car" so I can now conclude the day properly with more Tesla information and I can go to sleep dreaming about an AWD Model S :)

P85D | 30. März 2014

That was awesome.

I personally had no idea that SpaceX was doing flights for NASA.

shop | 30. März 2014

Of the two companies, SpaceX is probably even MORE amazing than Tesla. I mean, who the heck does a rocket ship startup?

Bighorn | 30. März 2014

IBEW commercial was an interesting buy. VW TDI, Cialis, Crestor, Fidelity were more predictable.

hcwhy | 30. März 2014

What an uplifting piece.

Tesltoronto | 30. März 2014

It was a great piece. I too was hoping to see more of MS. But it was more about the man than the vehicle. Enjoyed it.

Velo1 | 30. März 2014

Thoroughly enjoyed the piece. The TV ads leading up to it made it seem like the Model S was the focal point, but still enjoyed it.

Elon really got emotional talking about late 2008. The guy gets it, and is a legend in our time, thank goodness. He does things for the right reasons.

Now off to Netflix for the Revenge of the Electric Car!

Velo1 | 30. März 2014

@WEB-SRFR - not yet? While on Netflix watch the movie the Secret of Nikola Tesla. The acting is kind of corny, but the content is very accurate about another legend. Tesla > Edison

rmitchum | 30. März 2014

Some nice hints about a Model E, but nothing about Model X. (unless I missed it)

jman | 30. März 2014

Great piece, but didn't like the comment about the car costing 100,000. Sure you could create the car to cost that much, but the car I will be purchasing will not cost nearly that much, 60 with SC and tech costs about 76,000 BEFORE tax benefits !!!!

Gadfly | 30. März 2014

Best line was the iPhone - landline phone analogy. Perfect.

P85D | 30. März 2014

I want to watch that documentary now.

bradslee | 30. März 2014

Very nice piece on Elon and his two companies. Had CBS 60 minutes mentioned SolarCity, it would really convince people believing what Elon's sister has said about Elon must be true--that Elon has been back from his journey of future to Mars to tell us what he has done: getting to Mars, gaining solar energy on Mars and getting around on Mars.

LEvans | 30. März 2014

@Velo1: I was able to watch it on Chrome in full screen mode. What an inspiring and uplifting piece. Elon/Tesla deserves coverage of what they have accomplished and I just wish the entire 60 minute segment was devoted to Elon and Tesla They could have talked more in depth about his vision and the future but the piece itself was great

I'll have to watch the Nikola Tesla documentary now. We had just watched Revenge of the Electric Car earlier so this was a fitting follow up. If anyone has not seen The Revenge of the Electric Car yet, watch it on Netflix. It is great.

Really shows the difference between Elon and the guy who runs Nissan, Carlos Ghosn. Elon believes in the technology and the vision and means it when he says he wants to be free of fossil fuels. n the other hand Carlos Ghosn goes on record talking about how he doesn't give a damn about hybrids or environmental issues but then when he introduces the Leaf he talked about how much he cares about the environment and sustainability, which is nonsense based on his prior statements in the documentary.

We live in fascinating times!

BarryQ | 30. März 2014

So what will this do to the stock price tomorrow? My crystal ball is very cloudy!

Velo1 | 30. März 2014

I just watched the Revenge of the Electric Car, because I was amped after 60 minutes. It was great! Wow, what an electrifying evening.

I can't imagine back in 1920 there were over 300 American car companies.

Dwdnjck@ca | 30. März 2014

I thought the piece on Elon was very good and helpful to Tesla. I found the piece that preceded it on "front running" even more interesting. If you watch the price of tsla jump around each morning as I do,you have to think that the prices are rigged and others a jumping the gun on orders. The prices of each trade jump around so much, both up and down. Millions of shares are being traded and the process doesn't seem orderly at all.

Wander around the whole site. Amazing stuff. The "Grasshopper" initiative (soft landings for rockets) has the potential to cut costs to orbit by 100s of times. And "orbit is halfway to anywhere"!

Red Sage ca us | 30. März 2014

The segment on Elon Musk was very good and much appreciated. I stuck around and watched all the segments on tonight's episode of 60 Minutes, and they were all good! Man, maybe I should start watching this show regularly again.

carlk | 30. März 2014

OK it's official now. Everyone now knows it does 0-60 in 4sec. 60kWh owners don't be surprised tomorrow when you see all the M5's and 911's are getting out your way.

RedShift | 30. März 2014

Mostly what I already knew about Tesla and Elon. I just watched 'The Revenge of the Electric car' on Netflix, taking the cue from Velo1. (Thanks Velo!)

Watch it. It's a much more interesting. The different personalities of Bob Lutz ( a man I once liked, then hated after his grotesque, possibly meant- as -pun scheme to convert Model Ses into Corvette LS V8 powered cars, now after watching the documentary, have a mild appreciation for his sense of humor for ), Elon, and Carlos Ghosn make for a very interesting watch. For a car enthusiast like me, that documentary was awesome. :-)

RedShift | 30. März 2014

In that documentary, Bob Lutz reminds me of a crafty old lion, while Elon is a hungry cheetah. You can see Bob pacing around Elon, trying to get Elon's take on different cars, while Elon couldn't care less about Bob! ;-)

2050project | 31. März 2014

@Redshift, for sure... the movie 'Revenge of the Electric Car' is an amazing documentary that provides a glimpse into Tesla's early days, Elon, and the budding EV industry - it was fantastic. Everyone should check it out on Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, or just go here to buy it online here:

15 minutes of Prime Time on Sunday evening is worth a lot.

And Elon's ever-genuine qualities earned every second of it.

This piece will help spread the word, and sell a lot of cars.

AmpedRealtor | 31. März 2014

Great news on Friday... great 60 Minutes piece on Sunday... stock is down on Monday. WTF?

RedShift | 31. März 2014

@carlk,

So far my 60 has been challenged by all kinds of cars, Camaro SS, M3, Cayenne Turbo, M5, heck, even a brand new Lexus IS. I don't think those kind of people watch 60 minutes ;-)

I think people look at my license plate and get all worked up. (WATTRK8)

SD Supercharger | 31. März 2014

Christmas eve 2008 was certainly a dark time for Musk. Just goes to show that everyone has their ups and downs--it makes him a lot more human. I walked away thinking he is more vulnerable than I originally thought. Even though he always seems to make the right strategic move with Tesla, he is not as invincible as I imagined--he really is on a wild ride--and we get to ride along with him. What fun.
