Petition to allow Tesla to sell in all states-tracking progress

I signed yesterday and were up to 2400. I sent the link and a message to my friends and family, hopefully a few will sign it. I suggest all of us on the forum do the same!

Andrew18 | 22. Juni 2013

Up to 3,000! Keep going! Ugh..only 97k to go. Do these things ever fill?

jk2014 | 22. Juni 2013

Signed & passed on to family and friends...

jk2014 | 23. Juni 2013

Bump.

jimenez247 | 24. Juni 2013

signed

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

looks like it's gaining momentum... have to get to 8500-9000 per day to reach the 100k goal by 5JUL.

DouglasR | 24. Juni 2013

I signed one like this several months ago. Is this the same one, or shall I sign again? I thought the other one had an expiration date . . .

Runar | 24. Juni 2013

6500..

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

this expires 5JUL, started in early June...

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

This should be front and center on Tesla website (or Tesla Motors Club) site with a live counter. Let's get this to the attention of our national leaders. Finish it on the federal level once and for all.

sandman | 24. Juni 2013

up to 6,667. Not going to make it at this rate.

hillcountryfun | 24. Juni 2013

jk2014

+1!!!

Bryan M. | 24. Juni 2013

what are the rules to that petition?... is it 100k sigs by 5 Jul for the white house to respond or 100k to make it to front of petition board? Will white house respond if 100k signatures reached after 5 Jul?

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

If any of you know a reporter that will be at the president's speech tomorrow, ask the question of how would the federal government react to states blocking the direct sale of Tesla's American worker designed and made zero emission automobiles to American consumers? Will the inability of American's to purchase zero emission cars inhibit our country's ability to reduce carbon pollution?

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

hopefully tomorrow's news will draw attention to the petition somehow in a big way...

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

get your co-works, friends, and family to sign it this holiday weekend... just takes a click to get this thing on the national agenda... give a ride in your MS if you have to... should be easy to get people to sign it after that!

Jamon | 24. Juni 2013

We don't have the critical mass on these forums to reach 100,000 signatures. We need to find someone with a high profile social media account to help spread the word. Someone like Warren Buffett or Leo DiCapprio?? Does anybody have a friend of a friend to help raise awareness?

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

Still 11 days to get it to 100K. President speech on climate change and how he plans to reduce carbon pollution is perfect platform for awareness(advertising for the petition). Just needs a jolt to get done, think this and Jamon's suggestion could easily do it. Come on, it's just a 100k signatures. Direct sales is a very broad issue that everyone (99%) agree on.

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

6900 now... since june 5th to two days ago only about 3k... literally jumped nearly 4k sigs in two days...

momentum, momentum, momentum!

Bryan M. | 24. Juni 2013

213,901 likes for the Tesla facebook page surely we can get 100k signatures for Tesla Motors direct sales in all 50 states White House Petition

NKYTA | 24. Juni 2013

Signed. 7,114 now.

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

7200 now...

hillcountryfun | 24. Juni 2013

There's a bunch of famous folks in here:

http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/showthread.php/7532-Model-S-Celebrities

that should be able to help get the petition signatures above 100K...

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

I feel like I'm doing one of those public radio pledge drives that interrupt your music for days and get in your head with the guilt trips for listening for free...

I admit it, I've become one of those people... just get signatures!

Bryan M. | 24. Juni 2013

anyone getting this promoted or trending on twitter that should help

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

This petition is going work like the recent movement of Tesla's stock... one day it's 38, the next day it's 50, the day after that it's 114... fast accent in a short period of time...

nearly 7300 now...

getting ever so closer to the pledge drive goal...

choots.humphries | 24. Juni 2013

Signed. Passing to family and friends. Up to 7391! Hope we make it.

Bryan M. | 24. Juni 2013

Petition needs much more momentum but is steadily picking up

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

8000 now...

Sudre_ | 24. Juni 2013

I think I have signed one of these every month. You read the commits on it at Facebook and almost everyone supports it. It's just not getting to enough people.

Anyone have some spare cash to run a huge ad campaign on Facebook?
I don't know why Tesla hasn't done this every time a petition like this has come up.

Bryan M. | 24. Juni 2013

@sudre its so disorganized and then you have the people who are too lazy to sign it because they think everyone else will sign

hillcountryfun | 24. Juni 2013

8200!

rtb | 24. Juni 2013

Some thoughts: while what you are doing is laudable, even if the petition reaches 100,000 people--there isn't much that the White House can do since this is a state, not federal issue. I don't think there is an easy fix through federal legislation and even if there was--the fix would take a considerable amount of time.
On the plus side, there is a way that the readers of this forum can be effective--call your state representative. If you are buying a Tesla, then you are probably someone of influence in your local community (even if you don't know it)--call your representative and lobby them--they are there to serve you. Note, ending the dealership system is unlikely--however, maybe there is a middle ground--EVs can be sold directly by the manufacturer. This way the dealers aren't directly threatened and Tesla can be exempted. There is a good public policy justification for exempting EV cars given that selling and buying an EV car is pioneering and risk decision and weighing a company down with a dealership structure would only discourage EVs. Tesla should work on a 50 state strategy in the state legislatures--otherwise they will be fighting a defensive action across the country. I hope this helps.

DouglasR | 24. Juni 2013

@rtb - Congress could easily fix this, since they have the power to regulate interstate commerce, which this is. Of course, Congress doesn't seem able to pass anything these days, so as a practical matter, you are right.

One thing the administration could do, if it had the cojones, would be to have the Justice Department challenge some of these state laws as a burden on interstate commerce. The FTC might also come out against them. But I agree with you that the most likely path to success is local pressure. Kind of hard to outweigh the dealers associations, though.

rtb | 24. Juni 2013

I think if the carveout was EV only the dealers would have a much harder time fighting this. I agree that Congress could pass a law but think of the other entrenched interests that would weigh in--for example beer distributors, which operate on a system like car dealerships.

Bryan M. | 24. Juni 2013

but the petition isn't necessarily about getting congress to fix the issue. Small steps its about getting attention on the issue and we can't even muster up 100,00 sigs for a small victory(getting the white house to respond on the issue)

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

8500... looks like we'll hit 10k before 11 o'clock news (west coast)

wolfpet | 24. Juni 2013

+1 from Canada ;-)

Andrew18 | 24. Juni 2013

I emailed the White House and told Obama to help us with this. You never know!

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

If we keep up the rate of today, the petition will hit around 75,000...

If there is just 100 more sigs per hour, it'll hit 100,000!

keep it up everyone out there!!!

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

9,000 now...

jk2014 | 24. Juni 2013

Wonder if Tesla Stores can post this petition on a screen in the back for visitors to sign?

Bryan M. | 24. Juni 2013

i know many politicians have tried to throw Tesla under the bus notably Mitt Romney calling tesla a failed company. Has there been any that have publicly supported Tesla I haven't heard President Obama mention Tesla or anyone from his administration for that matter. Thinking about it even further most of the things I read about Tesla the articles usually try to put a negative spin on Tesla's progress as a company.

stimeygee | 24. Juni 2013

Calling your state representatives is probably the best thing you can do, in terms of effort to payoff. It really does make a difference, no matter who you are. I've talked to a lot of politicians and they really do take phone calls like this into account.
