Poll: Is your Model S your daily driver?

Poll: Is your Model S your daily driver?

Many non-EV drivers believe that even Tesla Model S owners just use their car as a secondary vehicle - ie, it isn't their daily driver. But I have yet to see a poll about this question. So, IF you own a Model S, I would appreciate it if you could participate in this very quick poll. Please use this thread to suggest poll question improvements.

Wups, this forum won't allow it to be in-line. Here's a link to the poll page:

Mathew98 | 06. Dezember 2013

I can't access the link but my MS is the daily commuter. My other two ICE boxes have been gather gathering dust and filth from the street since June.

nickjhowe | 06. Dezember 2013

@Shop - you should edit your OP to switch the link.

Also there are a couple of other threads on this: here's one: http://www.teslamotors.com/forum/forums/daily-use-feedback-requested-0

shop | 06. Dezember 2013

@nickjhowe - how can you edit a post on this forum? I didn't think that was possible.

That link you sent me was from 2011, I think we need a current poll. We are up to 55 replies, BTW.

mdemetri | 06. Dezember 2013

Daily driver.

exPGAhacker | 06. Dezember 2013

My Leaf is my daily. My MS is my evening and weekend ride.

@exPGAhacker, yes, I should have created another poll category for having another EV being the daily driver! Really, the poll is more about whether EVs, and the Model S in particular, can be a daily driver...

pdx4s | 06. Dezember 2013

day AND night...odometer rising up pretty fast, faster than any other vehicle I owned before

DallasTXModelS | 06. Dezember 2013

I get mine in two weeks. It will be my only vehicle which I commute to work daily 26 miles each way.

Bighorn | 06. Dezember 2013

Not another 99% result!!!

I answered in the poll(yes) but wanted to add that the "ICE SUV" is only for the snow and icy conditions. Just don't want to stop driving the S, call me crazy!

JstACarGuy | 06. Dezember 2013

Daily driver. Picked up the car this Monday afternoon and have 900 miles already. Cant wait to get back into car.

Mark K | 06. Dezember 2013

Yep. And my MB SL sits in the driveway.

Araujor20 | 06. Dezember 2013

My daily driver

Windsurfer | 06. Dezember 2013

My Model S is my daily driver. Unfortunately that means that it goes to the farm, to work, etc. in rain or shine so I can't maintain it cosmetically as well as I would like but, that's ok. It's a workhorse, not a show horse.

JPPTM | 06. Dezember 2013

Daily driver-only vehicle.

jajabor | 06. Dezember 2013

+1

shop | 06. Dezember 2013

Thanks, didn't know you could edit a post. Guess you can only edit the first post in a thread? Anyways, everyone, please respond to the poll, rather than comment here, or maybe in addition to commenting here.

For those that don't have a model S and can't vote, the tally is 128 respondents, 99% of which use their Model S as a daily driver. I'll post full results tomorrow after we get some more people to respond.

Captain_Zap | 06. Dezember 2013

I tried every link you posted and I just get a white page.

bicaabdi | 06. Dezember 2013

Definitely a daily driver. Around 200 miles per day. Thumb up all the way

nickjhowe | 06. Dezember 2013

@shop - yes, you can only edit the original post. That's what I meant.

shop | 06. Dezember 2013

Captain, we are up to 155 respondents, so it's working for a number of people. Try another browser?

bradslee | 06. Dezember 2013

So far there are 178 responses and I just added mine. Looks the page works fine.

Ven Rala | 06. Dezember 2013

Daily driver and I will almost put twice as many miles on this car per year as my previous ICE.

eddiemoy | 06. Dezember 2013

daily driver, havent driven anything else since!!

lvaneveld | 06. Dezember 2013

Yes it is my daily driver. Also our families preferred weekend vehicle when we don't have more than five people.

We currently have three visitors from out of the country and three boys. My wife also prefers to take it if she is going out when I am not driving it on weekends or nights.

Still have my old Prius but have to remember to take it for a ride every few weeks to keep the battery alive. Already had to replace it this summer from neglect. Only keeping it for my oldest son to learn to drive very soon.

Peter85 | 06. Dezember 2013

MS is my daily driver but I often switch with wife's EV, ICE sedan for long drives where SC not yet installed and my ICE minivan for windsurfing. (@Windsurfer, can't imagine you take your MS for that.) Replied to poll picking what I thought came close enough. Looks like over 200 respondents. What is it....30,000 to go?

shop | 06. Dezember 2013

Wow, huge response to the poll guys. I'll let it run for a few more days, but here's the result as of now for those that don't have a Model S and can't participate:

I think I'll post a similar post in a Nissan Leaf forum and see what kind of response I get.

Sleeper | 06. Dezember 2013

Daily driver, 14000 miles since july...

portia | 06. Dezember 2013

yes, it's my daily driver!

Brian H | 07. Dezember 2013

CapZap;
Are you using NoScript? Sounds like Javascript for that page is being blocked.

Captain_Zap | 07. Dezember 2013

@Brian H - Uh... when I use my primary browser I get a white page.
When I went to a browser with NoScript I got information about what it is blocking. I was able to vote without them learning too much about where I have been Christmas shopping on-line. ;-)

I had some bad coffee not too long ago. Need to downgrade.

Mark E | 07. Dezember 2013

It will be.

lolachampcar | 07. Dezember 2013

My primary
Wife's primary (two MS')
No backup ICE

Bonlaw | 07. Dezember 2013

MS daily driver for both me and husband as we generally commute together. On rare occasions that we do not go together he drives a Volt. On days we play golf, he takes the older Prius (10 miles per week) and I take the MS! Even the husband now refers to the MS as the wife's car.

It is really the only vehicle that anyone needs - it does everything

shop | 07. Dezember 2013

Great response guys - we're up to 345 replies to this poll. 98% of people use their Tesla Model S as their daily driver. But about 75% of people also have an ICE in the household, either for the spouse or as an other use vehicle. In a few days, I'll start another poll asking why the ICE is in the family.

I am doing a similar poll for Nissan Leaf owners have this is what it looks like so far:

Very similar results.

djm12 | 07. Dezember 2013

I submitted my vote. I'm one of the 8% that own a Tesla and another EV - no ICE for us and my wife and I haven't pumped a drop of gas since May. Road trips in the Tesla include: LA-to-Napa, LA-to-Palm Springs and LA-to-Yosemite.

We've used Superchargers nine times at six different sites. Tesla can't build them fast enough!

shop | 12. Dezember 2013

OK, the results are in. I did a similar poll for Nissan Leaf owners and got essentially (within margin of error) the same results.

jat | 12. Dezember 2013

The Model S is my daily driver, and a LEAF is my wife's daily driver. Occasionally we swap cars if she needs more range (like when it is really cold and rainy, since her commute is 72mi). We plan to rent a car for the one trip a year when the Model S isn't sufficient (before Superchargers get built near us), but that hasn't happened yet - I've been able to find places to charge (like for a Thanksgiving trip I charged at a llama farm near my cousin's house for ~400mi round trip in one day).

jks1 | 12. Dezember 2013

Yes, new daily drive is P85.

SamO | 12. Dezember 2013

Then there isn't enough granularity to the questions:

"If you have another ICE vehicle, could you get rid of it?"

ccbldg | 12. Dezember 2013

Shop,

Looks like your thread got picked up in the media http://www.streetinsider.com/Hot+Corp.+News/Confidence+Restored%3A+Most+...(TSLA)+Owners+Use+Model+S+as+Primary+Vehicle/8972574.html

mantin | 12. Dezember 2013

My wife has an ICE convertible and we have an SUV (for mountain and work horse use) I was 511 in the poll.

shop | 12. Dezember 2013

@ccbldg, cute. But even when presented with a pretty simple poll, the journalist can't quite bring himself to believe the numbers. First he couches the poll by saying that it may not be valid since there is no way of knowing who took the poll (but, frankly, that is a problem with ALL polls), and second he says:

"Results show that at least 71 percent of Model S owners use the vehicle as their daily driver.".

Uhm, no, the poll says 98% do.

Sheesh.

DaphneGreen | 12. Dezember 2013

Yes, although I'm not out and about everyday since I work from home.

dahtye | 12. Dezember 2013

Yes, I use it daily to commute to/from work. But we also have 3 other cars in the family (only my wife and I drive but we have two kids who are about ready to start driving). My wife drives the Prius that I no longer use since I now have the Model S!

The other cars are a Lexus GS300 and a Honda Pilot. The Pilot is used for traveling on dusty mountain roads to camps and for ski trips in the Sierras. The Lexus will likely be handed down to one of the kids.

robert | 12. Dezember 2013

It is my ONLY drive.
