Has anyone attempted I-80 in a model S? Experiences?

Haven't done that route, but you can use the beta "Route Energy Calculator" at to get decent estimates of the kWh required for various segments. You can also use the reference charts and spreadsheets at to help. Without superchargers, of course, you'll need 2-3 hours of charging per hour of driving :-(

I drive I-80 and US 40 in Utah. My trip starts at 5700ft climbs to 6800ft then back down to about 6500ft followed by a climb to 7000ft then a long coasting descent to SLC at 4200ft. I then reverse this trip to go home.

Using very basic calculations, my round trip is 100 miles and takes about 115-120 miles of range from the car.

I don't drive slow (usually 70-75mph) and I use the climate control to stay comfortable.

I haven't done this drive yet but I am from Sun Valley and currently live in DC. Would love to take my Model S out west though.
