Has anyone attempted I-80 in a model S? Experiences?
Haven't done that route, but you can use the beta "Route Energy Calculator" at http://EVTripPlanner.com/planner to get decent estimates of the kWh required for various segments. You can also use the reference charts and spreadsheets at http://EVTripPlanner.com/calcs.php to help. Without superchargers, of course, you'll need 2-3 hours of charging per hour of driving :-(
I drive I-80 and US 40 in Utah. My trip starts at 5700ft climbs to 6800ft then back down to about 6500ft followed by a climb to 7000ft then a long coasting descent to SLC at 4200ft. I then reverse this trip to go home.
Using very basic calculations, my round trip is 100 miles and takes about 115-120 miles of range from the car.
I don't drive slow (usually 70-75mph) and I use the climate control to stay comfortable.
I haven't done this drive yet but I am from Sun Valley and currently live in DC. Would love to take my Model S out west though.
