Can PowerWalls be stored long-term in a climate-controlled environment once they're received? Or must they be continually used to stay fresh and good?

It can be stored for 12 months between -4F to 86F with less than 95% humidity. Should be charged to 25% before doing so.
Ideally it would be put into use right away. I think the recommendation for storing a Model S is to charge it up to 50% every few days.

Batteries lose capacity over time as well as with usage. Therefore, a stored PW is losing life the whole time it is being stored. I can't imagine any benefit to not using them.

Thanks. I didn't think they'd last long, being lithium-based.
