My Macbook pro only has thunderbolt ports so you may need an adapter as well. I think you will save yourself a lot of grief if you have a PC somewhere or borrow someone else's PC and do it through windows. At least I know it works.

You can format FAT32 on macOS.

@EVrider. As I have no experience with doing this on a Mac and @jimglas is having trouble why don't you walk us both through the steps

Let me clarify my previous reply: when you choose the FAT format using the macOS Disk Utility, it will actually format as FAT32. I've been confused by this myself.

Again please explain the steps. From what I understand original windows formatting allowed only up to 32 gigs. So if you use up to a 32 gig thumb drive it would be easy. I bought a 128 gig drive and the link I posted is a utiliity that fools the computer into thinking it is 32 gigs.
Shows step-by-step with screen shots of several different ways to format the flash drive. Explains the limitations too.

Instructions are at the end of that section for the mac. Should be fairly easy. Haven't' gotten around to screen shots yet.

Thank you @EVRider!!! I'm a 35-year veteran of the Mac and do a tech podcast about Apple stuff and I could NOT figure out why FAT32 was greyed out. I think this is an idiotic move on Apple's part to replace it with MS-DOS (FAT) but still show MS-DOS (FAT32) in the pulldown as greyed out. You saved my day.
MS-DOS (FAT) is an option, should be FAT32
they are the same? My "FAT32" is greyed out
@jimglas. I used this utility on my 128 gig thumb drive successfully

Thanks, but I use iOS (Mac)
I also use a macbook pro but I formatted it on an old windows laptop. That could be one option for you. However I found this on a google search.

I wrote this guide last week, as the formatting questions keep popping up. https://teslatap.com/articles/usb-flash-drives-for-tesla-dashcam/#format...
