Inconsistencies in Planned Supercharger Map

On the supercharger page the description of the supercharger locations is inconsistent with the map. By Winter 2013 we are supposed to be able to travel via I-80 coast to coast. The map doesn't look like it picks up I-80 after Folsom until somewhere around Gary, IN. Am I missing something? I would love to be able to travel from the Bay Area to Denver without looping down through Las Vegas...doesn't look like that will be a possibility until end of 2014.

It doesn't mean taking I80 all the way, just that a significant portion will be on I80.

There are proposed superchargers on the I-80 corridor through Nevada: near Lovelock, and near Carlin. The problem is that you really can't get from Folsom to Lovelock on one full charge. When I start with a full charge in Folsom, I get home in Reno with about 90 rated miles of charge remaining. That is driving "normally", about 70 mph. The actual distance between Reno and Lovelock is 93 miles. So unless you creep along at 35-40 mph from Folsom to at least Reno, there is no way to make it between those two superchargers.

It also looks like it is a real stretch to make it from Carlin, NV to Salt Lake City: Google Maps says it is 251 miles. There are several mountain passes along this route, and I am pretty certain that it will take more rated miles than actual, even if you are very conservative in your driving habits.

If Tesla really has a goal of being able to drive I-80 from the Bay Area to Salt Lake City, they will need to re-think SC locations, or add some. I would change the locations: one in Reno, one in Winnemuca, one in Elko (ok, so I added one too!). Reno - Winnemuca: 166 miles (very doable); Winnemuca-Elko: 124 miles (also very doable); Elko-SLC: 230 miles (a stretch, but possible).

I figured this out in 5 minutes on Google maps; so it is not too hard!

Hopefully, this map is still in "draft form", and perhaps some of these locations will change, once a few more people get a chance to really look at the distances between some of the proposed SC locations.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the maps beyond the end of this year. I think those out year locations are proposed as ideal but doubt that much is hard wired (pardon the pun) at this point.

The coast to coast route doesn't really take I-80 at all. Maybe only at most 10% of the distance across the country. I wouldn't describe that as "via I80." Considereing I-80 is about as direct a route you could hope for across the country, I don't see why they didn't take the entire route on I-80.

Reno AND Lake Tahoe need SC stations ASAP for a number of functional reasons. Lake Tahoe is a frequent destination for Bay Area residents, and side trips to Reno are also common so it should be made I stressful for these options from the concentration of Silicon Valley Model S devotees.

@gparrot - everyplace "needs" Superchargers ASAP. The Bay Area has had most of the Superchargers in existence for a long time, let some of the rest of the country get some will you? :)

I hope the map is a miscommunication between the supercharger group and the web designers. I80 via Chicago,Des Moines, Omaha, Lincoln and Denver is much more direct and traveled routed than the I90 via Chicago, Albert Lea, Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Denver. Hopefully the map, as drawn, is in error.

Superchargers need a better coverage on Highway 75 from Atlanta to Fort Myers. There are dead spots in south Georgia. Macon & Cordele would be great locations with Cordele actually having an old rocket placed along the highway as a landmark. A supercharger could be placed right next to - Elon would love it!

To me it is most important to build the superchargers in metropolitan and frequented areas (vacation spots like Tahoe would be a good one). How many people actually drive across the country. I am in my mid 40s and have done it only 3 times and that is more than most people I know and I lived in NE for 24 years and California for 22. It is cool to say you can get all the way across the nation, but I do not think that should be the highest priority when it comes to building these.

The point of the Supercharger network is to enable cross country travel, not to provide charging in metro areas where we generally have other charging options.

That may be, but just because Elon went that route once, doesn't make it a good choice (longer route, bypasses more heavliy populated areas). One of the very few times i disagree with Elon. Just for the record, I am very biased in this case as I live in Omaha.

Is there any way to get the list of proposed locations?
Wonder if there's a way to get a location put on the list.

For example, I'm surprised there aren't ones on Long Island out towards the Hamptons... Would think there'd be some sort of draw.

It really needs to be stated "Across the country in a model S 85 model". I'm not seeing this as doable in a 40 or 60 for awhile without using RV slots or KOA chargers. You might need to put a Honda Generator in the frunk of a 40 or 60 to make it. (would that make the universe end??).

As for CA, NY and other coastal residents, you have your chargers (and terrible beef). Just like Government policy and other things, the middle needs a lot more attention. We have copious amounts of money we like to use as well. Boulder/ Denver areas are quite "green". We consume all things eco-friendly. Time and again healthier than all of you as well. Elon's brother needs to pull some family favors. I think he stays/lives in Boulder or something along those lines.

I'd say I-80 is nice for Elon's trip, but I-70 after Denver is quite a bit flatter and faster to the East coast. I've driven both multiple times and believe EV would fare better on I-70.

I'm inclined to agree with machmike - but so far SC's have been put less than 150 miles apart in California - I think Elon's goal is for 60's to be able to make the trips also - otherwise why have SC hardware in them?

time will tell - right now it's all speculation…

my personal experience so far with an 85 is that range is easily sapped with a head wind even for an 85 - what appears to be an easy jaunt can quickly become a battle of nerves…

machmike, the original 40 didnt even have supercharging as an option... so the SC network isnt intended to accommodate 40s, only 60s and 85s. As far as generator in the frunk- good luck with that. They put out 1-2 kW- same as a wall plug- at 115V. WAY too low a power output for a car.

As @STARR X noted, I-75 needs SC bolstering between Chattanooga TN and Tampa FL. It's 570 miles between those 2 cities and there are currently only 2 superchargers planned, one in Macon GA and one near Lake City FL. Each of the 3 legs approximates 190 miles. Three more SC installations, e.g., near Kennesaw GA, Tifton GA and Ocala FL, will bring each leg down to around 100 miles.

Without those 3 superchargers, FL winter visitors and tourists driving from Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and other neighboring states could find their trips inconvenienced with longer than optimal charging delays -or- borderline slow interstate speeds. Driving 55mph in and around Atlanta is (almost) paramount to having a death wish.

As an aside, Michigan seems to have an absolute plethora of SC installations planned. Surely 1 or 2 could be relocated to the I-75 TN > FL corridor. :)

I think any dot on the Supercharger map that doesn't represent an existing charger is tentative at best. From what I hear and read, the biggest bottleneck in building out the network is due to the fact that each Supercharger location represents a separate real estate transaction and concomitant construction permitting. It's probably getting easier as Tesla's star rises, but Elon said recently that at first it was hard to even get people to return Tesla's phone calls to initiate negotiations.

@Brian H: The first east-west transcontinental route on the Supercharger map leaves the Interstate system in Wyoming and skirts the Black Hills before picking up I-90 outside Rapid City. It's not much, but it's a start.

I was joking about a generator in the frunk. Are you by chance an engineer? I don't think you got that one.

My point is: the world doesn't revolve around the costal areas. Even if that point is lost, most of you travel here to ski, hunt, climb, bike, and so forth. The wealthier enjoy film festivals, Vail, Telluride summer/winter homes. Others show up to enjoy some fresh air and things like 340+ days of sunshine a year. Not to mention we are gracious enough to share our river water with you (LA would not exist if not for our sharing ways).

All we ask is a few superchargers in return for all the fun, H20 you enjoy in and from our wonderful areas.

A Super Charger pathway from LA->Vegas->Utah->Denver VIA I-70 would be a fantastic pathway. Keeping it south through LA->Vegas>flagstaff->Santa Fe-> Denver would be an epic drive also.

Here's a vote for some more SC locations in Arizona. I live near Phoenix, but will not be able to travel to my favorite destination - Sedona - without a SC along the way. I believe it's 148 miles one way with quite a bit of hilly/mountain driving. The closest location to power up is in Phoenix and no EV charging stations that I can find in Sedona.

Any friends here in Arizona have suggestions for this route?

This thread was started as a complaint that the map doesn't give a SF to East Coast route by this winter. That was never promised. The map is correct. You will only be able to go coast to coast from Southern Cal then heading North to South Dakota and then heading due East. As DouglasR mentioned, Elon's goal is to prioritize the first route as a sentimental journey to a trip he took with his brother when he first came out West. It will be a symbolic story for the press when he re-visits the same sites with his 5 kids. (Mount Rushmore, etc.) This is not the most efficient or the most popular coast to coast route but it's his company so he decides where the first stations go. As to those complaining and making suggestions about where Superchargers should go now, be patient. We've waited a long time for the car itself, soon our Superchargers will be all around us.

I would hope that Tesla is installing superchargers where their customers need them, not where their CEO wants to take a sentimental journey. The latter wouldn't sit well with stockholders, who are looking at profitability and for Tesla to grow out of its infancy. I don't think installing supercharging stations at over $300,000 each along a specific route that Elon took many years ago fits with the whole publicly traded company thing. But that's just my opinion and I'm quite often wrong... :)

Over and over again, people who short the stock (betting it would drop) because of their traditional thinking and conventional business model have been burned badly.

I wouldn't under-estimate Elon's re-creation of his road trip against public logic as illogical :)

The Brea Mall Tesla Store charging area has four NEMA 14-50 plus two HPWC. It is great to have the additional outlets to help both Roadster and Model S owners who need a charge if the test drive vehicles are using the HPWC charge stations.

Hopefully the economical NEMA 14-50 and/or HPWC will be added next to SuperCharger locations where some like to park for hours and shop, ie: Gilroy.

I for one am waiting on SC deployment along I-70 from Denver to St. Louis. I travel a lot for work, in addition to play time travel, and it's always along I-70. My future Tesla purchase is dependent on it. I would probably average about 1 SC fill up per week, without which even an 85 kWh Tesla would be insufficient. To get buy regularly without superchargers, I would probably need a 100 to 120 kWh battery.

@AmpedRealtor Jim Cramer is the biggest idiot in the financial news media. He advised everyone to buy tech in early 2000, pushe mortgage backed securities in early 2008, and has generally been wrong about more really big issues than anyone I've ever seen.

I consider it a good sign for Tesla if he thinks it's going to fail. It's like making it a policy to turn Left whenever your wife tells you to turn Right. Depending on the wife, odds are you'll get there more reliably.
