5339, signed papers last night: blue, tan leather, obecher matt, panoramic roof, tech, stereo, and 60kw. I got the configure email 2 weeks ago but waited until I could check colors, etc in showroom and do my testdrive. Went to the Oakbrook, IL store. They have 2 driver cars. I took the standard set up out for 30 minutes and it was everything I expected, plus a bit more in the power/speed dept. Sat in the performance model and played with the roof too. I filled up the Acura on the way home and began the mental countdown of 10 fill-ups to go (2x mo.).

Whity Whiteman | 14. September 2012

I'm European P502... I'd love to see the Email for me, Gentleman.
I think, my mail will only come in december for March 2013-Delivery .
But, in fact- if the high 5800's received their mail now (september)...
they'll get their car this year- in addition to the sigs- is it possible, that
Tesla massively outperform their production targets for 2012?

This must give a boost to the stock! If they sell 8000, they are break even..
would mean: Black numbers in 2012.
Go for it!

GLO | 14. September 2012

Love the alphafoxtrot mathmatics on fill ups. We are 3534 and ordered 3 few weeks ago. We are Nov/Dec delivery (pearl white, tan leather, nonperf, tech etc.). I count down each fill up in my 2000 MBZ wagon. Yeah Tesla!! I have a car for sle in CA!

jerry3 | 15. September 2012

Whity,

It's unlikely the will "massively outperform" their targets. It appears as if they will be between 90% and 110% of targets at this point (based on forum reading). Bear in mind that a lot of folks (or at least me) are stretching to purchase one and have based their purchase timing on what was estimated several months ago. If Tesla calls them early, they will just defer until they are financially comfortable in having one delivered.

My understanding is that 8,000 is what the Model S needs to break even. Tesla needs more than that.

Whity Whiteman | 15. September 2012

.... if the ramp-up goes further exponentially, everything is possible till the end of 2012...
they started with one car a day and now they are building ca. 16 cars a day. They go from a week to week basis. It is like on the chessboard... 1,2,4,8,16....32,64,128,256...
they have to do 64 cars a day (6-days week) to achieve the 20.000-goal. That's not that far away I think. If their double the rate twice, everything is cool!

jerry3 | 15. September 2012

Whity,

I'm guessing they will run into supplier issues if they try to do too many more than their plan. I can see 10% over at most (e.g. 5500 by Dec 31). Of course, if they originally planned for many more and just said a "safe" number...

TrevorPugh5 | 15. September 2012

Odenthal's Model S: Yep I am with you on that - just filled up my ICE today and it is really starting to piss me off!

My understanding is that 8,000 is what the Model S needs to break even. Tesla needs more than that.

You'd better inform Elon. He seems confused!

Whity Whiteman | 15. September 2012

hmmm, what can I say? They mentioned it several times in different statements, that they'll break even, when they sold the first 8000 cars... and it's not their only income

Whity Whiteman | 15. September 2012

and by the way: You guys think, that the Teslaboys are sleeping? They have a clear plan and they roll it out... I mean, if I would be Mr. Tesla, this would be my goal... to go break even this year.

GoTeslaChicago | 15. September 2012

...
""My understanding is that 8,000 is what the Model S needs to break even. Tesla needs more than that."

I think that is was 8,000 in 2013 to break even in 2013.

jerry3 | 15. September 2012

There seems to be several ways of interpreting what Elon said. However, if you figure 8000 cars times $85,000 average and a 25% gross profit you get $170,000,000. Even if you take $100,000 per car and a 35% gross profit you still only get $280,000,000.

Tesla's income statement shows (in millions):

2008: -$82.8
2009: -$55.7
2010: -$154.3
2011: -$254.4
2012: -$105.6 (till June 30)

As a company Tesla will need $652.8 to break even for 2008-2012. You're not going to get that out of 8000 cars. However, you will get it out of 30,000 cars. So Tesla is on track to be profitable in 2013, just like Elon says.

Brian H | 16. September 2012

jerry3;
The $653 is not profit, it's sales. "Break even" does not mean cover all past losses, it means for that period.

Brian H | 16. September 2012

Corr;
I see you just totalled accumulated deficit. Not relevant. Break-even means $0 earnings for 2013.

Whity Whiteman | 16. September 2012

8000cars/Year break even means in this Year! Hello?

Brian H | 16. September 2012

No, I think Elon was speaking of an on-going annual rate, and 2013 will be the first proper year of operations.

jerry3 | 16. September 2012

Brian -- The $653 is not profit, it's sales

Where did you come up with that conclusion? The 653 is the sum of 82.8+55.7+154.3+254.4+105.6 which is the sum of the net losses to date.

Brian H | 16. September 2012

jerry3;
Yes, I corrected that in the post above labelled "Corr". That's "Correction" abreviated.

But accumulated losses do NOT figure into "profitability". The instant you begin making net margin you are profitable. Past losses go into the account "Accumulated Profit/Loss" in shareholder equity, on the Balance Sheet, not the Income Statement.

Brian H | 16. September 2012

Corr;
"abbreviated", not "abreviated".
;)

jerry3 | 16. September 2012

Brian,

Yes, I hate the lack of an edit function too. I always catch mistakes after I press submit.

And yes, you're right from an accounting standpoint. Financial years are financial years.

lajollan | 17. September 2012

bump. Can we stay will the latest it's time to build your Model S emails received?

SD in the OC | 19. September 2012

bumping again. Latest reservation number to be contacted?

EdG | 21. September 2012

Sorry to all still waiting, especially any with lower reservation numbers.

Sig performance #303, late October delivery to Long Island, New York.

Pearl white, pano roof for headroom, black interior, piano black finish, spoiler, 21" perf wheels.

lajollan | 21. September 2012

What is the latest P number contacted? This will give us a better idea as to how many cars are likely to be delivered this year!

kublai | 21. September 2012

I think 5691 was the last number called. About 2 weeks has past a no new finalize emails. I am 5836 and waiting patiently refreshing "My Tesla" page.

Brian H | 21. September 2012

kublai;
At what rpm? (refreshes per minute)

pbrulott | 24. September 2012

I reserved mine P179 Can when US reservations were at 4,300 or so, in August 2011...

It seems to me TM is queuing Can Prod reservations longer than the true order of reservation would have suggested

I plan for a March delivery anyway. On time for the Service Center opening in my area :-)

TikiMan | 24. September 2012

I sure wish someone would fix this thread. It appears as a .000000001 font size when I click it open!

It's fine for me. Must be your aberrated browser! >;)

TeslaLABlue | 29. September 2012

Hope this picks up soon. No notifications seem to be coming in at the moment.

skystream3.7 | 30. September 2012

what is your number? my number is P6997

KevinR.co.us | 30. September 2012

The original information I got was you would be contacted to configure about 3 months prior to delivery. You would again be contacted to finalize about one month prior to delivery. Seems to me we will have an estimate of where production is at when the next round of "time to build" notices go out.

TeslaLABlue | 30. September 2012

7667 here, was at store in Santa Monica last night, it was packed. I did not know this but they said the signature folks are 1-1000. Then the numbers start back at 1 again....woops So due to the production delays I may be Spring time next year instead of Winter. Once they iron out production ramp up they will easily be making 400+ cars a week amounting to 20k in 2013.

skystream3.7 | 30. September 2012

don't forget all the 1200 cancellations, it might be sooner than you think P6997

sergiyz | 30. September 2012

the Signature numbers are more like 1,200 now.

Electron | 01. Oktober 2012

Just got the finalize email, I'm P6421.

cpetrush | 01. Oktober 2012

I got it, I got it! My "Time To Build" email! I am reservation number 6352. No P or S, just plain old base model, most I've ever spent on a car, Model S. Sooo excited!

KevinR.co.us | 01. Oktober 2012

Chris & cpetrush -- Very cool!
When you configure can you post your delivery time estimate?

cybercop | 01. Oktober 2012

Must have been a big batch because I just got it too. 6299. Anyone want to spot me $50k. I am good for it.

julian | 01. Oktober 2012

P5743 and I got mine today right around lunch time.

Brian H | 01. Oktober 2012

cpe;
You are a "P"; that's the local flag for any non-Sig reservation.

sunnysailor | 01. Oktober 2012

Hi,

P5801. The email came today.

Electron | 01. Oktober 2012

Estimate is Jan/Feb. There is a $4000 discrepancy between the design page and the final total.
Anyone know what's up with that? The total on the finalize page doesn't add up right either.
I'll probably call them tomorrow unless anyone knows.

Electron | 01. Oktober 2012

Errr... Never mind. I edited my design, then undid the change and the discrepancy went away.
Looks like a bug.

mrspaghetti | 02. Oktober 2012

Does it seem odd to anyone that reservation numbers as high as P6421 are already getting their email? I wouldn't expect that for a couple months yet.

Don't get me wrong, it's exciting if it really means these folks are 2-3 months out from getting their cars. But is that really the case?
