Is something missing?

Forgive me if I haven't done enough research but where are the rearview mirrors on the X model?

You are new and refrain from reading about the MX. It is a secret, only reservation holders know about.

The MX was designed to have side cameras in lieu of mirrors, from the getgo.

I think Tesla still hopes to roll out the MX with side cameras rather than mirrors (Tesla and other automakers have recently petitioned NTHS to be allowed to anticipate the side cameras mandated by NTHS for 2017).

I'm not sure I like the cameras as side mirror. Looks kinda wimpy.

But I'll reserve my full review until I see it in person.... 10 years from now!!!
Haha

Gee whiz, I know about the feds and change of regulations for the camera.... Very old news...

But the one starting ng this is great may need your help.

I have a MX reserved. Know about vehicle sine there is no specifications other than Tesla has released many, many months ago. Which is close to nothing..

Have you checked the Rimac Concept One?

No more mirrors at all, not even the inside one. The Rimac has three wide angle lens cameras connected to three screens. Check it:

Because inset cameras would present no wind resistance, side micro-cameras could be hidden under the front-fenders logos, ready for the MX rollout, since rearview cameras will be required by 2017 anyway (I understand NHTSA will respond to the Tesla petition mentioned above within a couple of months).

Nice car!

But those side mirrors/cameras look significantly bigger than the MX prototype. I could go for that.

Why big?

My take is that a side camera should be as small as possible, ideally just large enough to be squeezed under a transparent pane of glass or plastic, sideways flush with a car surface (door, fender, logo plate), in order to cause no air drag.

But if you are thinking about the rearview image, that surely gets projected onto a screen of adequate size and position on the dashboard.

It seems the side cameras should not be a problem or a reason for delays.

The funny thing though is that Tesla positioned the side cameras as direct substitutes for the mirrors, as if the images they supply would appear on their very bodies, like those of the side mirrors.

In fact, though, the side camera needs to be positioned for the best viewing of the rear of the vehicle, not for direct visibility to the driver, since the image it provides is wired to the dashboard and can be positioned for the driver's convenience, inside rather than outside the car.

It seems obvious that the best location for a side camera is under the front fender, behind a transparent pane of glass or plastic mounted flush with the fender surface (an alternate location in Tesla would be behind the logo plate).

In this way, it does not compete with the side-mirror for the location, which means the car can have both mirrors and cameras, at least temporarily, that is, until the regulations no longer require the mirrors, at which point the mirrors can be removed.

They don't have to.

The triangular plate the mirror stalk would be attached to can be replaced with a like-shaped mask plate, without holes.

Correction: Tesla does not appear to attach the side mirror stalks to triangular plates, but to the sills of the side windows.

I suspect at least the front sections, if not the whole sills, would have to be replaced in order to remove "the ghostly images" of the side mirrors when the time comes to discard them.

Really hoping the side cameras get built into the front fender emblems, and not put on stems where the mirrors usually are
