Autopilot risk of PPF or ceramic wrap

edited November -1 in Model 3
Is there truth to some people saying it’s dangerous to have PPF or ceramic coating over front bumper or over any radar/sensors?

Yes I’ve heard of some shops able to apply the films around the sensors but just curious in case wherever I can find a shop isn’t able to.

I have PPF and the place I went through they have machines that cut the wrap specifically for vehicle specs and which goes around sensors etc. I would assume most places do it this way. But, if I were you, I would double check.

Same as afcop2, just make sure they cut around the ultrasonic sensors. It looks ugly if you don't do this anyway. its not going to affect radar. There are some YouTube videos showing that it also doesn't affect the ultrasonic sensors, if it is installed over them, but I'd cut around them just to be safe.

It will work fine but be warned I’ve wrapped my last three Teslas. I then had a bumper issue with my 2017 model s as the bumper was delaminating a little. I took it to service and was told that aftermarket wraps void your warranty. I called BS and talked to the regional manager who confirms this unfortunately. I posted a note to one of our local wrap companies and they promptly deleted the tread.

So any kind of wrap voids paint warranty? Even if it’s just front bumper does it void just that part of the warranty, or more?

The Model 3 owners manual specifically says to not install any clear bras or coatings on the bumpers because it can impact autopilot. I even asked about this when I took delivery of my car and the delivery specialist confirmed not to put a clear bra or coating on bumpers. While I want to protect my car’s paint, I ultimately decided my safety and the safety of others is not worth coatings to protect my paint.

That’s what I was told. Any paint or body issues (like allingment). I went so far to ask “so you are telling me if my bumper just fell off on the highway there would be no warranty because I had a wrap on it”. I was told yes- no warranty coverage. Not sure about electronics like the ap you asked about but I think in an effort to maintain profits they are cutting into warranty work???

I just spoke to my delivery agent for a Model S, and he said the opposite. Its an end user decision that they have no objection to.
