Tesla in Malaysia

edited November -1 in General
Hi there, I'm Louis Thor from Malaysia. I'm totally impress of what had Tesla contributed to the environment and I really hope that I'm one of it. So, I wish to know that is there any Tesla dealer or reseller in Malaysia?
If no, can I apply for it? What is the requirement? Thanks.

There are no dealers or resellers. Only Tesla employees in their car stores.

Does anybody know what the import tax would be for bringing a Tesla into Malaysia?

Right-hand drive deliveries of Model S (perfect for Malaysia) will begin in Spring 2014.

I'd like to know what Malaysian duties would be levied. There is a 100% import duty exemption and 100% excise duty exemption for electric and hybrid cars in Malaysia until 31 December 2013 but does this only count for cars assembled in Malaysia?

    Any advice greatly received!

The link below should give you an idea of the latest policy for EV in Malaysia to qualified for full tax exemption .

I think your range are within the price Malaysian use to pay for conventional cars. If you can sell at the price that you sell in the US, with full tax exemption , you need to have a CKD operation in Malaysia and use the country as a hub for South East Asia.

You wouldn't be paying on taxes to 'bring a car into Malaysia' if it was already there, so, it isn't, and yeah, you go to America, you pick up a Tesla, you ship it home

I'm not sure if you can import LHD cars, but if you can in Malaysia with a special exemption, I'm sure they'd let you import one

Some new developments on EVs in Malaysia:-

MAI to build around 150 EV charging stations by 2017

CKD tax exemption deadline is currently December 2015; it would be great if Tesla could explore its options here by then.

Please make my next car a Tesla! :)

Myuubie, just why on earth would Tesla build a ginormous factory on a small island for an even smaller consumer market when it's planning on building one in China which A) reduces the price in a location where people flock like sheep to buy their car, and B) IIRC, it's part of the ASEAN thingy whereby there's a free trade, tax free exchange of goods and vehicles

If you want a Tesla, right now, in Malaysia, in RHD, contact me on Skype, my username is MuzzaHukka, and I'll advise and assist you (handling fees included), and you'll have your very own legalised Tesla that you could show around.

There is no need to build a factory for you to be able to get a specific model of a car, and why of all places such a big company would build THERE of all places... I don't know

Malaysian government recently introduced EEV policies, encouraging manufacturers to set up plants for EVs. With tax holidays, etc.

My bad, they are mostly in Semenanjung. I don't even know if there are any in Sarawak and Sabah
  • edited January 29
I'm not sure about Sabah Sarawak, but if customer interested, anywhere in malaysia also can be import.

At the meantime, ChargEV occupied most of the charging stations though is not as much as in US.

Where can I see and test drive a Model 3 in Malaysia?
  • edited May 5
you can't test drive a model 3 in Malaysia. Even I can bring in, the car is brand new, and it can't be driven by anyone except the owner.
