Tesla resale rumor

We purchased full self drive with our model 3. We've been told that if we sell it and buy a new car the full self drive does not transfer with the car. What is the truth?

Comments

  • It stays with the car it was purchased on. It doesn’t transfer with you to another car.
  • Stays with the car if you sell privately. Trade in to Tesla, and they will disable FSD prior to reselling.

The rumor started because someone traded in to Tesla, then Tesla forgot to remove FSD, and the new buyer thought they got FSD for free. Tesla noticed their mistake and disabled it retroactively.
  • I don’t think that’s true. Tesla sells used cars with FSD on them. Some people received inventory new cars with EAP left on them without paying for them. Many of these oversights were later corrected.
  • The truth is any software upgrade you buy stays with the car. I bought a used Model 3 that had EAP.

Does the house addition go with you when you sell the house?
  • If you trade in the car, Tesla can remove options before reselling the car, even if they don’t always do so. If you sell privately, options go with the car.
  • There is no evidence that it does.

That is not quite accurate. In that case the feature was never paid for and was removed as the result of an audit. In fact Tesla even reactivated the feature out of goodwill. Tesla does not remove paid features even on trade in vehicles.
