Is radiant insulation still needed with a solar roof?

I realize thermal insulation is still required, I'm curious if the solar roof protects against the radiant energy.

  • According to those with Roofs, there's a 1" gap between the tiles and the roof sheathing. I would think that this gap would greatly reduce the sun loading on the sheathing, and thus reduce the need for a radiant barrier between the roof rafters.

A construction/roofing expert would be a better source for this info, but be aware that asking someone who's business includes installing radiant energy barriers might tell you the answer that makes them the most money. It's a cynical viewpoint, but still must be considered.
