New Performance Leather Seats Upgrade (?)

edited November -1 in Model S
So, I was just contacted by phone by an HQ Sales Advisor, who offered to upgrade my Grey Leather Seats to the "New Performance Leather Seats Upgrade" - gratis.

Of course, I accepted. I don't turned down free stuff very often :)

I checked the Design Studio, and it doesn't appear as a selectable option. Is this perhaps a new standard? In my haste, I didn't even think to ask him, but he sent me a confirmation email, so I may quiz him.

Anybody else get a similar notification?

For the record, I've got a metallic blue S85 in production (61507).

Did you check to be sure they are the color you want?

Hmmm, I have selected Grey Leather on a car that my DS says will be ready between the 15th and the 30th of the month. It is not in production, yet. I hope your offer doesn't mean supply issues with Grey seats... unless I happen to get the same offer. :)

Performance seats might not be for everybody. The are designed to hold you tight in your seat. Some might like more freedom of movement.

@C_Z - he said they would be grey as well. I'll be watching my configuration like a hawk though.

Also got word that it is, in fact, a supply disruption, so rather than making customers wait for the standard seats, they are providing the upgraded seats at no cost to preserve schedule.

    That has happened before.

I guess the end of year crunch made Tesla outpaced their supply chain a bit - did it happen at a similar time in the year before?

It has happened more than once when a major change is made. They have had issues with suppliers not being able to ramp up at the same pace as Tesla is ramping up. It causes a few stutters, but they work it out.

That is one of the consequences of "just-in-time" manufacturing supply queues coupled with a new version of a semi-custom car on a new assembly line. Then, there is a new supplier added into the mix.

Are you sure that the performance seats you're talking about are not the older P seats that have the alcantara inserts... the $1000 upgrade from the base leather seats that have now been taken off the options list. I was told I could still get them through December if I wanted them. But they're not the the new the $3500 upgraded "Next Gen" seats that are only available on the P85D (currently).

Will the next gen seat be available for the S85D in the future? My DS doesn't think so.

BigBlueLou, exact same thing happened to me yesterday and I accepted also. Must be a grey-specific shortage. Hope you like yours, mine is scheduled to arrive in MD in a couple of weeks.

@garlene - I have come to realize that the DS is the least informed person in Tesla. Folks on this Forum know 10 times more and know much sooner. If you want a real answer to your question either post it here or call headquarters directly. The DS is nothing more than a customer service rep reading off a piece of paper. IMO the DS is definitely an area that Tesla can improve dramatically. Other than the DS the company is one of the best I've seen!

@basf - I think you're right. These are probably not the next gen seats for the D cars, but the old P seat upgrade. The guy from HQ (Jethro) mentioned it was a $1000 upgrade, but also said it was a "new" upgrade. Some mixed messaging, but I highly doubt it's the next gen seats.

No worries, The grin still comes standard :)

I got the call. Took me 0.7 sec to say yes.

Oh, and he told me it was a 2500 dollar upgrade. I get mine the 11th. !!!

@trixiew - that sounds like the next gen seats to me...interesting to see what we're equipped with at the end of the day

@garlene, I have an email from Jerome Guillen saying that the next gen seats will be offered on all MS models, but the P85D is getting priority while supplies are constrained. Given this thread's OP, and the Guillen statement, if you want the better seats, you might wait a few months.

Performance seats are not necessarily "better". They are a particular type of seat with particular purpose. That purpose is to keep you snug in the seat and to keep you upright when dealing with centrifugal force when cornering. That is why they have the exaggerated side bolsters.

@pungoteague and @tmaz, thank you both for the info. I delayed my delivery until late spring, so hopefully I will get the new seats.

Just checked my configuration online. It's been upgraded to the "performance" seats, which are the ones with the alcantara inserts like @basf alluded to. Gives it some nice extra detail. As long as my car is produced on schedule - all indications are that it will be - then I'm happy.

@P_D and @C_Z - thanks for the clarification!

I'm waiting for the Next Gen seats before I will order my S85D.

    Big Blue,
Where did you go to check out your configuration. I got my Vin number 2 weeks ago but since then, only crickets
  • edited November -1
@David - It's the "View Design" button on your dashboard.

I would love to get the new performance seats in my P85D, is this in any way possible?

I have the Recaro seats in my Audi S4 and I love the comfortable bolsters!
