Spotify in the US

edited November -1 in Model S
For those interested, It appears that Tesla is entering a band width test phase with Spotify for the US. They point to a late summer roll out to replace Slacker. This info comes from a very reliable source inside Spotify Product Development Team.

+1 Bishoppeak - why is Spotify better than Slacker. I use the pay$ version of Slacker and love it I have however never used Spotify. Can someone give a real world answer as to why Spotify is better rather than "is way better"

It's not clear Spotify (as will be implemented on the Tesla) will be better or not. Each has some unique features and most reviews compare mobile apps, which are completely unimportant since Tesla provides it's own interface. Both are likely to be 160 kbps (yes they have different options, but Tesla is unlikely to open it up to higher bandwidth and costs).

Some pluses for Slacker: Has news, sports and talk show content that Spotify doesn't, and has Expert Curated Recommending, which is usually better than Spotifys computer recommendations.

Some pluses for Spotify: Has comedy that Slacker doesn't. It has replay, fast forward and rewind options.

The biggest thing Spotify has over Slacker is available in many countries. Slacker is strictly USA/Canada only.

@TeslaTap.com does that "free / limited" version of Spotify have replay fast forward and rewind. My paid Slacker account has those too and much much more. If the "free / limited" version of Spotidy DOES than count me in.

I don't know what features of Spotify will be included. Perhaps our friends outside the USA/Canada can chime in as to what features Spotify offers on the Tesla.

I listen to comedy all the time on Slacker free version.

When I use slacker in the Tesla, I can call up a song and it will play that song, then it "meanders" in playing songs that are somehow related to the requested song. When I use Spotify (at home/Sonos, my computer or on my iphone), I can select an artist, or album and it will play the entire collection I select. I can also make a playlist of that artist (or a collection of songs/artist) and play that. Once I select a favorite, or playlist on Spotify, it can be used on my Sonos system, or computer or iphone. So for me, it would be ideal if i could use my spotify account on the Tesla. Oh, I use a paid version of Spotify. There are no commercials and I can select a higher streaming rate.

@Boondocks - can you use the paid version of Slacker in your car with the more advanced features than is available on the standard version that comes with the car?
  • edited May 2016
@Firebolt & @ 5thumbs YES i have the paid version of Slacker in my car. (just sign up and then enter your own credentials in the "apps" section. ps. I also do this with tunein!!) I allows me to create playlists, have entire albums available on request, play and repeat individual songs at will, everything that it sounds like the paid version of Spotify has. So, unless the free version of Spotify greatly trumps the paid version of Slacker I am still completely sold on Slacker paid version

I have the pain version of slacker but the Tesla app does not allow you to play the same song or rewind. If you search again for the song to play it again, sometimes it will play it, other times it will plan a related song. The app on my phone is much better.

I wonder if the pain version of Spotify will have the same problem.

I've had Waze for Tesla on my car for 6 mon. and it works fine.

I think a huge reason to switch to Spotify is Sound quality (if Tesla bandwidth allows it). Spotify offers 320 KBPS compared to Slackers 120 KBPS. Also Spotify has more than twice as many songs. 30 Million for Spotify and 13 Million for Slacker.

Spotify in Europe has been around for a while. If the teslas there can handle their bandwidth. Why not just push them through here?

@Copythat23 - Slacker on Tesla offer standard 128 kbps rate and a 'better" rate of 160 kbps in settings. While Spotify has 320 kbps via the Internet, it's unclear if Tesla provides that bandwidth. My guess is it is downgraded to 160 kbps or maybe even 128 kbps, especially since Tesla is paying for the bandwidth. It's not something that's easy to test, but perhaps one of our European owners knows what the bandwidth the Tesla version is using (not Spotify's mobile app).

I agree that Spotify integration would be great! My biggest complaint with Slacker in my car is the way it tends to repeat the same 15-20 songs over and over when you create a channel based on a song or artist. If you make the mistake of "liking" a song in a channel, expect it to play so often you will very soon hate it! I have a paid subscription to Spotify so having it integrated into the car (voice control, favorites) would be a big plus for me.
