While USB 3.0 is capable of being faster than a 2.0 drive, it doesn't' mean it is fast enough. The drive may not be fast enough to deal with 3 video streams. I addition, some drives are rated high speed only for bursts, but not continuous recording. Then there are counterfeit drives (with brand names) that are really bad. Here's a lot more on how to validate a drive and more on picking a suitable drive: https://teslatap.com/articles/usb-flash-drives-for-tesla-dashcam/
At the end is more troubleshooting suggestions.
I found one example on YouTube here:
‘17 S75. (Uncorked [E]AP FSD AP2.5 MCU1 Bio 16.1)
‘17 X75D (Uncorked [E]AP FSD AP2.5 MCU2 Bio 12.1.2)
Grin on!
The SSD is a Samsung 840 SATA drive. I put that into a very low cost but high quality SATA-to-USB 3 (and USB 2) enclosure. (This is where I get them: https://www.gearbest.com/goods/pp_009418584436.html - it can sustain over 420MB/second writing with the Samsung SATA drive when using USB 3. On USB 2 it is limited by the USB 2 interface)
Anyway, this works relatively well but I still get occasional bad video files. I think that it depends on what else is going on.
My Model S is older - from 2017 - so it has the older MCU1 and an early AP2.5 hardware board. I think the 3 camera streams are pushing the limits of the system as it stands right now. Maybe the HW 3 update will help with the dedicated hardware for generating the encoded videos.
PS - I think it also helps to turn off live traffic in the maps in order to make things more stable.
I am using a SanDisk Ultra CZ48 128GB USB 3.0 that can go as 100MB/s transfer speed.
This drive works flawlessly before the update. I reformat the drive a couple of times, but still same issue.
Tesla support told me that the update has nothing to do with my drive, they suggested to replace it because it might had been corrupted.
I bought another usb drive 64GB USB 3.0 50MB/s capable speed, It works for a day, then it also stopped working.
Tesla could not give any solution to this issue until this time.
As a bonus, you can also plug the adapter directly into your phone or tablet and view video. You do have the pick the right adapter for your phone (micro USB, USB C, or lightning).
