'Maximize cargo capacity' = six-seat interior

Tesla states that to 'maximize cargo capacity' choose the five-seat interior. It seems to me that for max cargo capacity, you really get the most with the six-seat interior (when its 3rd row is folded).

Even the seven-seat interior has the same deck area as the five-seater when the 3rd row is folded.

Is there something special about the flatbed area in the five-seater?

    I suspect when you entirely remove the 3rd row in the 5-seat option you get more storage space where the 3rd row seats were. Folding the 3rd row seats still leaves the seats in the car consuming space even if folded down.

    We may have to wait for the detailed specs from Tesla to know which configuration has the most space, but they are already saying that skipping the 3rd row provides the most cargo space.

    The floor is the floor. If you have a folding 3rd row on top of the floor, it takes up space. Without the 3rd row, you can probably slide skis under the second row. I'm really torn. Originally wanted seating for 7, but the $4,000K price tag is pretty steep, and my wife thinks a bigger trunk will be more useful than 3rd row seating.....

    @TeslaTap, that would be true only if folding the 3rd row created a hump. If it results in a completely flat plane, it would be the same flatbed area, wouldn't it?

    They really should find a way to fold the middle row so everything is a flat plane. I think it would create clarity and translate to a bigger demand.

    Maybe the X has the well at the rear like the Model S, and the 3rd row flips backwards into the well. This would leave a flat floor like the 5 seatter, but you loose the storage inside the well.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the 3rd row flipped forward.

    I don't know which way it flips. If it goes forward, I can't see how you could have the same flat floor you would have without the seats. I really hope they flip back into a potential space behind the battery/motors.

    The lack of clarity here is creating confusion. I'm afraid it will frustrate people and affect demand.

    You get a flat rear area instead of two seats folded flat and raising the floor of the rear 12 inches where the 3rd row seats are. They don't fold into a hiding place. The back folds forward onto the seat bottom. It's like haveing two suitcases laying on there sides already in the rear area.

    So without the two seats you have a continues flat rear deck from rear hatch to the back of the second row. More space without the two suitcase size folded seats sitting there.

    Sigh. You would think the engineers could figure out a way to create a flat deck with the third row seats folded, like 99% of SUVs out there.

    If you have 5 people in your family, then you have maximum capacity with the 7 seater. Since you can use the entire trunk section if the back seats are stowed. I run into this issue all the time with my wifes's Yukon. We have the 2 bucket seats in the middle row instead of a bench seat. This makes us use a seat in the third row for my third child. It really limits our luggage space, since I can't stow the third row. In fact, we had to take my Model S on a weekend road trip, because the Yukon couldn't fit my family with the luggage. The Model S had much more room. For my 5 person family, I will get the 7 seater Model X. So I can use the entire back for luggage. However, if I had 4 in my family, I would go with the 6 seater.

    This isn't a huge SUV or minivan with tons of space to make the 3rd row disappear into. It's only 2 inches longer than the S. There's a battery and the vehicle's motor back there folks!

    As Roamer stated the third row folds forward in half onto itself. In other words the seat bottom doesn't go anywhere, it's stuck in place and the back folds down on top of it creating a completely flat load area behind the second row but about 15 inches (or so, can't recall the actual measured height) higher than the floor beneath the second row.

    There is still a deep cubby behind the third row. It's just not very deep front to back. There's a thread both here and over at TMC with the actual measurements.

    I went back and looked at the sig config page pictures. The picture showing a bike fitting in the back shows a flat floor from the lower edge of the rear hatch over the flat folded third row seats.

    The rear basement storage was a pretty deep hole. The just opened production pages say the no third row option will not be available until mid 2016.

    The plan may be to redesign the entire rear floor and lower it from the rear door to the second row. That would make it a super sized trunk with a shollow(er) basement area. If they do that it would defiantly create a large storage area.

    The limit to how low and how flat will be the area over the rear drive train components.

    Still lots to learn about.

    Think of the Model S interior trunk floor that Model X is based on. If Model S rear facing seat backs only folded down and the seat bottoms didn't move, that is the approximate DECREASED vertical space you would have with folded Model X rear seats.

    The Model X without rear seats should be the same as Model S with NO rear facing seats AND some extra space with NO rear seat row.

    Model X with 5 seats has the solid second row of three seats that prevent long objects from being transported. I assume that all 5 seats ARE adjustable.

    Tesla should have a 4 seat option to allow transport of the long objects AND the maximum cargo area!

    The one good thing about the absence of the third row is the available floor space under the second row. You should be able to slide long narrow items like skis or perhaps even a snowboard under there. I do not own either, but am just saying...

    If you take the words maximun capacity literally 5 seat configuration with one less seat certainly will provide more space than the 6 seat configuration. That has to be true if you measure the volume by how many pingpong balls you can fill in the space. It might be different if what you meant is usable space. That would depend on what you plan to carry.

    Just another thought why is the 5 seat configuration costs $5000 less than 7 seat? That can't be how much it costs for two additional seats. Could it be that the second row seats with the 5 seat configuration are different ones- like they are slab seats and can be folded flat? Although that still does not make sense since if the slab seat can be offered with 5 seat configuration there is no reason why it can not be offered with the 7 seat configuration.

    The price difference is $3000 for 6 seats or $4000 for 7 seats, not $5000. For this price, you also get the rear HVAC system (with vents in the side pillars and independent controls) which is not included with 5 seat configuration.

    @carl, you're right regarding the true volume difference. However, I think clear deck AREA is what most users care about ("How much floor space is free?"). In that case, folding the 3rd row is the same as having no 3rd row. Most items stowed don't really hit the ceiling, they just have to fit on the deck.

    Just noticed the 5 seat configuration is "available mid-2016". That makes my speculation that it might not be simply remove the two 3rd row seats but a new 2nd row seat design as well more plausible. I also got an explanation why they will not replace the 2nd row with slab seats in 7 seat configuration. They don't like passengers seating behind to see the unattractive seatback.
