I ran a test with Sentry mode running all night. With Sentry mode enabled I saw a drain of 1 mile per hour of range used. I hope that gives everybody a baseline to go from. Have a good day!
That sounds about right. The brain, the Nvidia Drive PX 2 consumes about 250W when active according to Nvidia, and that equates to about 1 mile of range per hours.
And what is it w/o?
I measured 0.9 mph drain overnight, probably higher drain rate during the day if there are moving objects the cameras pick up and have to analyze.
Parked today at the airport until next week, sentry mode on. Going to watch it and see, parked with 262 miles of range.
Thanks for the info. The dual cam BlackVue DR900S draws 400mA at 12V while recording. That’s 5 Watts peak power...
The downside of the Tesla dashcam is the entire AP system is required to monitor the cameras, hence the 250W power draw. Still, hard to beat free, even if it consumes 50 times the power of a typical dashcam.

So around 8 miles per work day doesn't sound like a bad compromise to me for sentry mode with no vehicle mods, unsightly aftermarket cameras, etc. This is built right into the car already. I love it.
I also tested yesterday and got about 1-2 miles per hour. Today I get to work don’t activated sentry mode but I check an hour later and battery lost 7 miles. Does teslacam stay active after you get out of the vehicle, yeterday was also first time I had tried teslacam. Outside temperature was 50 degrees.
@Teslanene teslacam turns off when the screen turns off to my knowledge. Sentry mode basically prevents things from shutting down completely so that the cameras can continue to capture video. As for your drain Im not sure maybe you had sentry on by mistake?

Your battery will be dead in at least 11 days if just 1 mile used per hour. 262 miles divided by 24 hours = 10.91 days
Is Sentry mode always on or do you need to turn it on? I am losing mileage from having cabin overheat protection on and no one is going to break into my car in the parking lot at work or while its inside my garage, so I dont want to lose 24 miles a day in tange.
Parked at 1030 et, n now it's 1300 et drained from 262 to 255, will more than likely turn it off. Only a 6 day trip, but don't want the tow of shame to a charger.
mine is recording constantly even though I have sentry mode "off", then I have to erase all the files to get the red dot back on the dashcam
I heard that 2019.5.4 was problematic. How’s 5.17? Can you turn Sentry off? I don’t want to install it if it drains the battery...
passion2fly, how will you know if you get a software is available message whether you are going to get 5.4 or 5.17?
I parked at the airport on Thursday afternoon with sentry mode on and with 216 miles left and came home Sunday morning and the battery was totally dead. Really bummed.
@Wspieker - Sorry to hear this .... I am sure you were not happy. The problem is that every car that drives by triggers the recording. I will only use it when I leave the car for more than a few hours if it is plugged in. I hope your experience teaches others.
Using Justin.Rogers as a guide - sounds like Sentry Mode is using about 65-70 miles a day. That's simply way too much battery usage for long-term parking with Sentry Mode enabled.

While I've not done the test, the fact Sentry mode is on requires the AP processor (at about 250W) to be powered up. The power drain should not change significantly as to what Sentry mode sees. This should be about 25 miles of range per day - and I thought a few others saw this drain rate. Also Sentry mode is supposed to shut down if the battery gets to 20% SOC. The car shouldn't be dead after 3 days even if it got to 20% SOC. Something else is going on.
@wspieker - Is there any chance a door was left slightly ajar? This would force the HVAC to remain on and would drain the car far faster depending on the local temps.

Update on my situation: for whatever reason the car simply shut down. When I rebooted it, using the brake and two scroll wheels, it ultimately showed 190 miles left. Not sure why I had to reset it, but I will be careful about using sentry mode for extended periods of time in the future.

I have the new MS Raven and Sentry Mode its using about 20 miles a day. Car was unplugged in the driveway while I was away and I had to ask a friend to stop by and plug it in.
There are 2 optional battery hogs:
1) Cabin Overheat Protection
2) Sentry Mode
Both can be turned OFF (cabin overheat has “fan only” option as as “cheaper” option”
IMO unplugging USB flash drives is easiest. (Even music one as this is a vampire drain.
I suppose you could “complete power off” but I would think that would be bad. I think no battery temp management or security system would operate.
@Craiglampe - Unplugging the USB won't do much of anything. You can actually run Sentry even with no USB installed -- so you'd have to make sure it was turned off. I'm not sure how a music drive has vampire drain, but I'll take your work on that, as I don't use one. As soon as you close the car door, the music shuts off. There's a power off from the screen, but when you open the car door, it turns on again. Cabin overheat will only run for 12 hours, and then the car will sleep normally -- so as long as you have sentry off and don't open the app, your car will enter a sleep mode where it uses about 1% per day to maintain systems (12v, battery, etc).
There’s no vampire drain from a music USB.
Thanks for confirming, @EVRider! I didn't see how it could, but since I didn't use one, I wasn't sure if there was something I was missing there that stayed active, however unlikely.
I just tried sentry mode on my short drive to work, about 4 miles and over the day noticed another lost range of about 10 miles, in line with an earlier comment of draining about a mile per hour, so I just turned it off for regular use. though colleague was at dinner in downtown Oakland, her car was broken into and it was captured.. So based on the advice from above I will only use it conditionally. and think twice about using it long term when parked at park and fly

@baldocchi: Unless the airport is hours from where you live, you're better off leaving the car at home and taking an Uber to the airport. More convenient, you don't have to worry about your car, and sometimes even cheaper depending on what you pay to park.
does dashcam use same amount of power as sentry or more?

It seems that the large drain from Sentry Mode isn't necessary. There are HD cameras you can buy that run on internal batteries for weeks or months at a time, storing clips of detected movement on SD cards.
I'm guessing that the problem is that currently for Sentry Mode to be enabled, the whole car has to be "awake" with lots of other functions drawing juice. If Sentry Mode could be on a different circuit or something, it shouldn't have to draw a mile an hour of energy.
My brother recently had his tail light smashed while parking at a hotel. There wasn't any destination charging, so he disabled Sentry Mode to avoid vampire drain, and therefore has no video of the incident.
Parked at the airport for 29 hours at a temperature averaging just over freezing. LR AWD AP3 with Sentry Mode on. Lost 10% battery, or about 0.3% per hour, 1.8 km/hr or 1.1 mi/hr.
That's 200 Miles of range lost parked at the airport for a week.
Maybe the settings page should warn you of that when you turn on Sentry.
I barely made it back home from the airport.
DETAILS: Full charge before my trip. Airport is 40 miles from my house. 7 day trip. Range remaining was in the yellow by the time I got home.
@warrenmr: Sounds about right. My experience (and that reported by others) is about 1 mile range loss per hour with Sentry activated. At about 4 miles per kWhr, that's a little over 3 cents per hour for my vehicle protection when parked in public - - well worth it, I think!
0.25kW/hr for Sentry * 25cents per kWh SuperCharger = 6 cents per hour.
$1.50 / day
$500 / year
If you charge at home for 10 cents per, then maybe you get that down to $200/year. Turn Sentry off at home and even less.
The issue is not the cost so much. It's the surprise when I get back to my car and there barely enough charge to get me home.
I think if you told the owner that they'd lose 25 miles of range per day, some would not turn it on.
