Josef Stalin Would Be Proud

Josef Stalin Would Be Proud

If someone had told Josef Stalin that in less than 70 years after his death the leader of the free world would be strutting around in his capital city on Independence Day like some third world tin horn dictator complete with full military display, he would have considered his mission accomplished.

@Neo. Indeed Obama was condemned for the deportation of kids and separation of kids. A couple of points. Trump’s lies that the Dems and Obama were soft on immigration is exposed. The difference is that Obama was a lot more humane about it. Trump has in fact created a crisis by targeting all illegals and even those who are legally seeking amnesty. He is targeting DACA recipients and many who have been here for decades and have made major contributions to our country and economy. Reporting many of these will even be disruptive to the economy. He should be prepared to compromise with Congress and set up a more sensible immigration policy with a pathway to citizenship. And stop mistreating children and holding them hostage. Those are blatant facist tactics

@sabbia,
Yes, you got me. As soon as I clicked "Save" on that post with my diploma mentioned I knew it made me sound like a douche. Guilty as charged. I'm a big enough person to admit it.

Now, are you a big enough person to admit that on election night, 2016 you were a crying mess, curled up in the corner, unconsolable, ruining box after box of tissue as you shouted at the world "Why??? Why??? It was her turn!" Jesus Christ, how can you expect someone to win an election when their entire goddamn platform is "It's Her Turn". Maybe if she had gotten out there and tried a little instead of smugly knowing she had the election in the bag. Idiocy.

Neomaxizoomdweebie | 13 July, 2019

What was that word NKYTA used? Unteachable? I believe it is the Democrats that are unteachable.

leeramer | 13 July, 2019

I always find it interesting to read the differences between liberal oriented people and conservative types. What I have found discussing with conservative types is that they all fall under the same type of thinking and do not change. Same as someone who is liberal oriented. There is a definite genetic component. To try and change someone's thinking especially for a conservative is almost impossible. Conservatives are not supposed to change that is why they are conservatives. They also tend to take facts that only work into their world view. They also tend to be followers of authoritarian types, hence the desire to serve in the armed forces and also believe in a monotheistic god, especially one so all powerful. What it ends up being is basically a waste of time and one of the reasons why I have stopped having discussions on abortion, climate crisis, ev's, transgender, homosexuality, gun control, immigration, moon landing, world trade center destruction etc...with discussions on anything other than films and tv shows which we surprisingly have in common for the most part.
The question I now ask is how do you live in a country where you have half the population so fundamentally divided on what they think is right. Where every 4 years it's always a we beat them scenario with winners and losers where one side tends not to want to then work with the other side no matter.

Neomaxizoomdweebie | 13 July, 2019

It can be quite agonizing. Long distance running helps.

Neomaxizoomdweebie | 13 July, 2019

@leeramer,
Your statement “They also tend to be followers of authoritarian types, hence the desire to serve in the armed forces and also believe in a monotheistic god, especially one so all powerful.” Thats patently false. You don’t know the minds of conservatives and why they do what they do. Don’t try to theorize.

SCCRENDO | 13 July, 2019

I think he got it exactly right

TranzNDance | 13 July, 2019

I was conservative and became liberal/progressive. People can change.

SCCRENDO | 13 July, 2019

I have also evolved. At one point Republican trickle down economics made sense to me. But then I educated myself.

MitchP85D | 13 July, 2019

I know of liberal women who vote republican because they are devoutly anti-abortion. You can't put people in boxes leery one. People have different reasons for why they vote the way they do.

NoMoPetrol | 13 July, 2019

From the latest issue of The Economist (July 6-12, 2019) the following thought opens the article entitled "The Self-Preservation Society":

"Reactionary nationalism is a challenge to liberalism. It is even more threatening to conservatism."

The concluding paragraph of the same article: "...old-fashioned conservatives may still have the best chance of mounting a victory of moderation (against reactionary nationalism), If they do not, they have the most to lose...they risk finding themselves dragged along a path not of their choosing."

The conclusion of this article will probably mean nothing to the kool aid drinkers on both extremes of the political spectrum, but the sentiment gives those in the less-defined middle of the political spectrum a chance to fantasize about a government of compromise.

Neomaxizoomdweebie | 13 July, 2019

I think I know the minds of all liberals even though I'm not one. Let me tell you how all liberals think. Blah blah blah words words words.
Do you think I could encapsulate what makes you tick, SCC? No, I wouldn't try to pull some kind of bullshit Hannibal Lecter analysis on you.
Our boy leeramer thinks he knows how we all think. Monotheistic god? I couldn't give a shit, I don't care who you worship or how you worship. Just don't show up on my doorstep in your black pants and white button-up shirt looking to convert me to your brand of delusion. Abortion? Do what you want, ladies, it's your bodies. I just hope there aren't any crises of conscience later in life for those that use it as birth control. If its for medical purposes (save the life of the mother), holy shit, do it! Desire to follow authoritarian types so they serve in the armed forces??? Have you checked the math on that statement? Roughly half of the electorate is conservative. Nowhere near half of Americans have dreamt of serving in the Armed Forces. Me, I didn't join to serve under an authoritarian leader. I joined to fly and hopefully go to Mars. I only got to do half of what I joined for. 20 years down the drain, fuck my life.

We'll see how this tax plan plays out. I'm still optimistic that with most Americans working we'll eventually break even on this budget thing and start paying off our debt. Beats the shit out of AOC's harebrained plan.

Neo, as of June 2019, US unemployment rate is 3,7%. 224,000 jobs were added in June. Labor force Participation rate is at 62.9%. Tax relief works. It always has dating back to the days of JFK. Yes, JFK was a tax cutter. And it would stun liberals to know that Bill Clinton cut the capital gains tax. This is the tax on the rich. The economy did well under Clinton, Gingrich, and Lott. Small wonder why.

Neomaxizoomdweebie | 13 July, 2019

Mitch, it’s good to have precedent.

NoMoPetrol | 13 July, 2019

I wonder if JFK's tax relief plan created as many hamburger flipping jobs as our most recent tax cut.

Neomaxizoomdweebie | 13 July, 2019

What an incredibly well thought out question!

RedShift | 13 July, 2019

I was grateful for the corporate tax cut. That meant I could hire more this year. Until I saw what it was doing to the deficit.

All the conservatives were tying their panties in a bunch when Obama was President. THE DEFICIT! OMG!!

Now? They like deficits now. Hypocrites much?

Next, the tariffs. This is a guy who doesn’t really understand, not care to understand how tariffs work and who pays for them, that much is clear.

Our business has been hit by the tarriffs as they affect the semiconductor world quite harshly. So, the corporate tax cut that allowed me to hire more, is now pretty much negated as far as its benefits are concerned.

So let’s see what we have ended up with: bigger deficit, with no change in well being of my business.

This is reality. Maybe this doesn’t come into the view of conservatives with no understanding of how businesses work, but are quick to idolize the ‘successful businessman’ that Trump is.

It’s sad that this country is slowly taken to the cleaners by an ignorant voting class so much in crisis and fear over their identity that they white wash everything this moron President does or says.

They will vote for their demi-god no matter what.

@Neo. I ask, "I am ignorant of the starship captain with whom @jimglas shares the same surname. Please educate me."

You reply "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_T._Kirk"

It's not that you're wrong on this minor point, it's that you have an undeserved sense of who you are and what you understand. In short you pontificate and you're not the pontiff. "I think I know the minds of all liberals."

Let me ask my question again, what starship captain shares a surname with jimglas? And you the one who writes "blah blah blah words words words."

For most of us, words have meaning and are used to educate (or "train" in certain cases). You, apparently think you have the best words like your authoritarian leader.

Hint for your research into the starship question, First understand "surname."

Second hint, learn and understand why Mrs. Malaprop is the very model for scorn and ridicule. In short, there are just a few on these threads that you are fooling.

wagner.kyle88 | 2 August, 2019

i voted for trump. and will again in 2020.
Democrats think their job is to improve people. They think voters are disgusting and immoral. They want to force them to be half as virtuous as they are. For the second election cycle in a row, that is the Democratic message: You're disgusting. Try to be as good as we are. Maybe not surprisingly, it turns out that when you tell people you hate them, they don't care for it. What voters strongly prefer, actually, is when you try to improve their lives. It's not complicated. And yet somehow - and this is the remarkable part, if you think about it - Democrats have in the three years since they lost, steadfastly refused to learn this lesson. Improve people's lives? They'll tell you. "No, thanks."

andy.connor.e | 2 August, 2019

Policies that infringe on free speech are on the table for every single DNC candidate. One thing Trump as not done is implement any laws that coincide with a "fascist regime". While i may not agree with quite alot with what he has done, and is doing, protecting our Basic Fundamental Constitutional Rights should be priority #1 to prevent our country from moving towards a 20th century disastrous leadership.

geo.teepe | 2 August, 2019

TranzNDance | 2 August, 2019

@wagner.kyle88, I'm guessing you're a white male. Anyone else is being sent the message that anyone not a white male is hated, not necessarily for what they have done, but for how/where they were born. Apparently some of those who are targets of the hatred don't seem to be getting the message.

andy.connor.e | 2 August, 2019

sabbia | 2 August, 2019

Kyle Wagner writes "[Dems] think voters are disgusting and immoral.

This in the face of Trump calling all of Baltimore "DISGUSTING." It's just amazing Wagner could be blind to this.

Here are few other "disgusting" tidbits. All by Trump, all on Twitter.
CNN is disgusting 9/3/16
Fox News is biased and disgusting 2/17/16
NY Times is disgusting 5/19/16
Showing breast feeding is disgusting 5/14/12
Barney Frank looked disgusting--nipples protruding--in his blue shirt before Congress 12/21/11

It's not hard to find more. A lot of us have spent time on this forum trying to understand the willing suspension of disbelief of people who tend to ignore Trump's mockery and insults (wow...see Mika Brzezinski) and think it's the left who are quick to be disgusted. No matter how much we think about and write about Right Wing Authoritarian appeal of Trump, we find comments such as the one to which I'm referring.

The trouble is mostly the con. I assume Kyle Wagner is decent. It's this kind of person that Trump takes advantage of telling people they got a tax cut, telling people Mexico would pay for the wall, telling people that Kim Jong Un is a really nice guy, telling people Russia didn't interfere in the election, China is paying for the tariffs. Some are angry and just like to stick their fingers in the eye of the man. Others are decent, hard-working people who have simply been had.

It's the signature issue of our time...how do we understand the irrationality of 35% of our fellow citizens. It's a problem.
