Phantom breaking is back!

Phantom breaking is back!

I just updated to the latest firmware on march 19th, 2020... Immediately after that sudden breakings or hard decelerations appears while driving on freeway (on an avg speed of 73 mph) on autopilot or even on TACC.
Worse is it doesn't happens once in awhile... It happens maybe EVERY 2-3 minutes driving.

"Hard deceleration" means it goes from 73 mph down to about 50 mph in just maybe 5-7 seconds. And then gradually goes back up to 73 mph in about 10-15 seconds.

Are you on HW3?

vmulla | 22 March, 2020

Hmmm...if it’s happening that often then the root cause might be different. Are you sure there’s no other complicating factors such as obscured sensors?

M3phan | 22 March, 2020

I’m on 2020.12, no phantom braking. But then I’ve reported before that I’ve only had a couple events back in summer 2018, and none since. Lucky I guess.

FISHEV | 22 March, 2020

My latest update is 20.4.1 but it seems like overpass phantom braking has increased. I wonder if that is due to sunny weather and the overpasses looking more like walls or turning tractor trailers with reflected light.

n2_one | 22 March, 2020

What is HW3 ?
I used autopilot/TACC every single time I get on the freeway like every single day. Nothing out of the ordinary... Having this problem right after I updated to version 2020.8.1 is very suspicious.

There are several threads, on the first page, discussing HW3.

HW3 is the new Hardware computer required for the upcoming FSD features. HW3 is already in most newer cars but older cars have to get upgraded to HW3. You only get upgraded if you purchased FSD.

n2_one | 22 March, 2020

Then no I don’t have hw3.. I don't have FSD but I took delivery of my brand new M3 exactly 1 year ago.. March 2019.

Phantom breaking is back!

It never left. The severity comes and goes a bit depending on the software version, roads and apparently what part of the country you drive in. Heavier trafficked highways appear to do better. One of many reasons I do not bother to use TACC or AP.

Magic 8 Ball | 22 March, 2020

Phantom braking is experienced by some and not all. I experienced it early on and filed bug reports. After a few updates I do not get phantom braking in the spots I used to and have not experienced in any new spots.

@n2_one - you may want to change your ID to n2.5 because it better aligns with your onboard computer revision.

teslamazing | 22 March, 2020

OP is suspect for saying breaking.

sheldon.mike1010 | 22 March, 2020

Breaking? I thought it was broken....

WW_spb | 22 March, 2020

It is always there if you use AP on local roads.

joseph_millard17 | 25 March, 2020

teslamazing is saying its supposed to be spelled like braking not breaking.

andy.connor.e | 25 March, 2020

the phantom breaker

I use it every day on local streets. I see none. I do experience braking instances, but they are not phantom, I know why it is happening.

BRAKING not breaking

WW_spb | 25 March, 2020

Well, daa When m3 comes around the corner on two lane road and if car is coming opposite way it will break thinking we are about to do head on collision.

I have seen that a couple times, not often but it does happen. Definitely a rare occurrence, but again its not phantom, I know why it is doing it. "Phantom" implies it is stopping for things that do not exist, in this case the risk does exist, it just misread the situation.

That is not the biggest issue if you use FSD on streets right now IMO, it is cars turning in front on you. You have to be on your toes :) But again... haha... I know the reason :)

WW_spb | 25 March, 2020

Yeah, it's doable but not much fun for me. (Auto pilot on local roads)

avibhogal | 26 March, 2020

I just picked up my car on 3/20 and took for a trip to Princeton from Baltimore, for sure I experienced random braking when passing by large inanimate objects or Tractor Trailers. Will make a log to try and track it.

pieromontas | 26 March, 2020

Same here in m3 from a year ago rocking HW 2.5 using autopilot i dont know if is the shadows but is been happening a lot.
