Factoid: "Brain Power" (Some light humor...)

Did you know?

The average human brain consumes energy at the rate of about 12.6 watts, which about 20% of the consumption rate for the whole body at rest, which is 63 watts.
The brain apparently has no switches and consumes energy at that approximate rate day or night, awake or asleep and possibly even during a coma.

I suspect some are "dim-wits," and as a result consume less than 12w of power....

The Math

—Resting metabolic rate: 1300 kilocalories, or kcal, the kind used in nutrition
—1,300 kcal over 24 hours = 54.16 kcal per hour = 15.04 gram calories per second
—15.04 gram calories/sec = 62.93 joules/sec = about 63 watts
—20 percent of 63 watts = 12.6 watts

Interesting. I remember some years ago seeing a study where they did PET scans of brains, and documented significantly higher brain energy consumption during intense intellectual activity, accounting for feelings of exhaustion similar to those from physical activity. Damned if I recall the source now, but it would seem to be at odds with yours.

Most sources agree the brain consumes ~20% of the body's power. Sources vary on body power consumption, ranging from 60 watts to over 100 watts. Again, this post was intended for light humor.

I work in the thermal comfort field. There's tons of numbers about how much heat a body puts out. Obviously affected by activity & size. We always just generically use 100W. Nice round number.

it would be interestiing to see brain activiy during different activities.
For example, in sports would there be more cerebellar activity since a lot is muscle memory?
