Model S post the factory upgrade

Model S post the factory upgrade

Does anyone know if the Model S will have any changes post the factory upgrade? I know won't be massive things but given the assembly can accommodate M S and M X just curious if there are any smaller common changes that we can expect.

renwo S alset | August 3, 2014

I heard they are adding a line of coat-hook robots.

J.T. | August 3, 2014

@PotomacEV We don't know nothin' and Tesla is quite excellent at keeping it that way.

Rheumboy | August 3, 2014

I heard they are adding another frunk

Rheumboy | August 3, 2014

It will be called the front frunk

SCCRENDO | August 3, 2014

Does the new front frunk have cup holders.

Dan L | August 3, 2014

Gull wing doors for everyone! :)

I expect minimal changes, if any. Setting up a new line is an undertaking in itself and their team will have much to tackle as they fire it up.

Rheumboy | August 3, 2014

The answer to today's cup holder question is no :-(

johncrab | August 3, 2014

Apparently there will be a change to the matter-antimatter reactor and a smaller change to the main warp engines. Not sure about the photon torpedo option or voice command of "Shields to full Yarnell".

renwo S alset | August 3, 2014

Everything stated here is just heresy.

thranx | August 3, 2014

@renwo: lol!

@rheumboy: they'll have to call it the funk.

Rheumboy | August 3, 2014

I'm in a funk now :-p

Neptune Blue | August 3, 2014

Since I'm taking delivery later this month, I asked my delivery specialist that question shortly before the shutdown. He told me that only the factory was bring changed, not the vehicles.

BlueS | August 3, 2014

sccrendo - I am with you on the cupholders. There isn't a usable cup holder in the car anywhere!

Mark K | August 3, 2014

Usually, when you set up a new line, you want to eliminate new variables (like product changes) to recover a stable baseline.

It wouldn't be silly for them to bring up the new line with exactly the same specs first, and then roll in changes after they were smoothly humming along at 1,000 / week.

michael1800 | August 3, 2014

Didn't they add sun visor lighting with the new line upgrade?

nickjhowe | August 3, 2014

Based on my conversations with 'sources close to Tesla', I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't a lot of small (probably not very noticeable) changes. One specific noticeable example is the change to the aluminum bezel around the speedo/dash - it was redesigned to be thinner for the RHD cars, and the new line will be set up that way for all cars. There are probably hundreds of component and manufacturing improvements that will come with the new line.

Having said that, cars have been constantly tweaked since day one (e.g., Elon's admission that cars now are 'several hundred pounds lighter' than the original cars) so although the August-forward cars will be different than the July cars, the July cars were probably different than the June cars and so on back to June 2012.

Anthony J. Parisio | August 3, 2014

Any word on new options?

Plugged In | August 3, 2014

I heard that the Model S is going to come with an optional shuttlecraft hangar: When you need a miniature Model S for one person to go just a short distance (no more than 20 miles), you can launch from the trunk and get the short-range errands done. When finished, return to the hangar.

It will fit in the space where the optional child seats go.

No really, doesn't anyone believe me?

NKYTA | August 3, 2014

Great, thanks @nickjhowe. Not only does she have an A battery, now you are calling NKYTA fat!

Mathew98 | August 3, 2014

Not only is she fat, she has big hair to go with it.

I have seen the thin bazel in a May 2014 production car.

NKYTA | August 3, 2014

Big hair I can take, but "fat"? Them's fightin' words Matthew!

Mark K | August 3, 2014

I prefer "fully endowed". Pound for pound, we got more car for the dollar.

NKYTA | August 3, 2014

@Mark K, sensible as always.

Chuckles...and gets back to packing.

nickjhowe | August 4, 2014

@Mark K +1

I don't know nothin' 'bout no stinkin' options.

Mathew98 | August 4, 2014

For some reason the song "Baby Got Back" kept on playing in a loop in Slacker. Just this morning another song, "Anaconda", mysteriously popped into the playlist.

Who's been hacking my playlist?

People at work are looking at me funny today. What's wrong with singing "I like big butt and I can not lie"???

J.T. | August 4, 2014

I heard NKYTA likes big hair.

NKYTA | August 4, 2014

No JT, "big hair" bands. ;-)

LEvans | August 4, 2014

Wow all the infantile comments about cup holders or coat hooks really makes it much easier to get useful information pertaining to the OP's legitimate question. Thanks so much because if you have no need for things you deride about how dare anyone else want them -- right? :)

OP, thanks for asking this question as I have been wondering myself. I'm hoping since the MS and MX share the same platform that eventually we will get an AWD MS from the new production line.

Mathew98 | August 4, 2014

I hear there's a new hook to hold the big hair wig in place while the car is in motion...

NKYTA | August 4, 2014

@WEB_SRFR, did you not read the second post?

J.T. | AUGUST 3, 2014
@PotomacEV We don't know nothin' and Tesla is quite excellent at keeping it that way.

Since we don't know, the OP can ask Tesla. If Tesla isn't forthcoming with any answer, then what?

That is why sometimes these type of posts turn into cupholders threads...

Grinnin'.VA | August 4, 2014

@Rheumboy | AUGUST 3, 2014

love the MS85 configuration that I'm getting in October.

NomoDinos | August 4, 2014

NKYTA - now if we were talking about cupCAKE holders, that's an entirely more exciting prospect :)

WEB_SRFR - I know how you feel. I had been holding out for AWD for a while, pushing my delivery back to March 2015 initially, but I caved and am now looking at a December delivery. Still holding out a grain of hope that it comes out before my car goes into production!

Brian H | August 4, 2014

1st MX deliveries in quantity in Jan. probably explains the November Gap in MS deliveries; ramp up and initial testing of production cars and other QC. Elon may repeat his personal inspections of those first few (hundred). Or random samples thereof. He only has a few SpaceX launches between now and then, after all. <;p
Speaking of which:

The AsiaSat 8 mission is targeted to launch in the early morning hours of Tuesday, August 5 with a backup launch opportunity on Wednesday, August 6. The launch window opens at 1:25am EDT. The AsiaSat 8 satellite will launch on a Falcon 9 rocket from SpaceX’s Launch Complex 40 in Cape Canaveral.

tezzla.SoCal | August 4, 2014

@NoMoDinos - congrats on finally finalizing! Today is my 1 year anniversary, and what a great ride it's been!

NomoDinos | August 4, 2014

Tezzla - Thanks! I've been going completely nuts, it's about time. I'm just glad I'd locked in the rate before it went up again. Happy Teslaversary, and thanks again for the generous test-drive!

Brian H | August 5, 2014

heresy = hearsay? Rarely true. Maybe this time.

Pungoteague_Dave | August 5, 2014

@Brian H - "1st MX deliveries in quantity in Jan. probably explains the November Gap in MS deliveries; ramp up and initial testing of production cars and other QC. "

You are incorrect on MX deliveries in Q1. No MX will get to customers in 1Q15. Elon said this on the call last week when talking about the new production lines - "there is a big step that's expected to occur in Q1 next year which is the bring up of the body line, the SX body line... And we'll move to beta within three months. So it's a real fast alpha to beta. And you can expect to see production, not in customer hands but kind of on the road, doing test and validation in Q1 next year."

What I read in that is Elon's GOAL at this point is to begin initial production of test cars in Q1 next year. Design work is still underway on the X, and no test mules exist yet. On the call he said the single existing prototype was a pre-alpha "show" car. There are no alphas in existence yet, much less betas. He went on to say "In the case of the X, I mean we're going to try to move to sort of several hundred units a week within three months of production.... But because of that, we really wanted to [indiscernible] validation on the car, test the heck out of it before going into volume production."

Given Elon's historical accuracy on projecting timeframes, I would be shocked if significant MX deliveries commence before the end of 2Q15. That is perhaps optimistic given the November '13 Elon statement that 6.0 would be pushed out shortly, and he later mentioned January. Seems like 6.0 is still in beta too, almost a year later. And where's the promised first battery swap station? Great company and Elon's a true genius, but sometime he needs a muzzle. In this case, even he hedged his bet - watch the words very carefully - "expected to occur" leaves real wiggle room on when the first beta X bodies will emerge from the line - much less customer cars.

renwo S alset | August 5, 2014

Brian. Based on the content on this forum, heresy was the correct choice.

renwo S alset | August 5, 2014

PD. The only certainty in life is death.
If everything went according to plan, we wouldn't need prognosticators to blather about their vast knowledge about how things should go or should have went. Of course, we wouldn't need cable news then, either.
