Cool story of a Musk fan getting to hang out with Elon for 30 minutes last week

My buddy Werle (P85 owner and TSLA shareholder) is as drunk with the Tesla kool-aid as we all are but he is also infatuated with all things Elon. A friend of his runs Kimbal Musk's charity The Kitchen Community. They do great work and I encourage you all to google it. Anyway, they held a very exclusive (only 100 invited guests) fundraiser at SpaceX last week and Werle's friend got him an invite. Being friends with the event coordinator pays off as he was offered access to a private pre-event tour of SpaceX by none other than Elon Musk. So after arriving at the SpaceX complex Werle is escorted to Elon's office. Elon is having friendly Q&A with James Cameron and his wife along with Laird Hamilton and Laird's family. Elon sees Werle (who is as big of a nobody as the rest of us) and waves him in and includes him in the conversation. They all chatted for about 15 minutes and then a SpaceX employee took them into the shop and started to give a tour of the rockets while Elon stayed behind in his office.

Now here's where the story gets really good. Since a private SpaceX tour with celebrities is less interesting than hanging with Elon, Werle ditches the tour. He tells the security guard that he has to meet a friend out front who is joining the tour. (a small white lie) Werle re-enters the SpaceX offices and heads straight to Elon's office. Werle apologizes but just wants to shake Elon's hand and thank him for all he is doing to make the world a better place. He goes on to explain he is a shareholder, P85 owner, blah blah blah and what a HUGE fan he is of Elon's work. From that point on he started asking questions about Tesla, SpaceX, space travel, etc. This went on for an additional 30 MINUTES!!!!! Elon could not have been any more gracious and friendly and gave NO indication that he was too busy to chat or that he had more important things to tend to (like being CEO of 2 budding companies, chairman of another, father of 5 and project manager for autopilot cars.) I asked Werle why he got so much face time and he is only guessing its because he knew so much about Elon's work. Like many of us, he spends hours each week reading every article and watching every video. Werle knew every public fact and asked the right questions to keep Elon interested.

They talked about the price of the stock (Elon gave nothing away). But the most important news that came from the discussion was the topic of future battery supply. This is no longer an issue Elon told Werle. Elon said that both Samsung and LG are "stepping up". Meaning they want Tesla's business and are competing to get it. There is enough capacity to supply future Tesla's. We can all breathe easier now on this issue. Elon went on to say that any supply issues would be from a 1% supplier but he mentioned nothing specifically. Then Elon joined Werle as they reunited with the tour with the Cameron and Hamilton families. From there the charity event was a huge success for a great cause.

Surely one of those moments in a persons life they will never forget !

I envision large buildings in the US that produce the mass amounts of batteries needed in the future electric cars !!!

I am extremely jealous. Congrats

Very cool!

CalDreamin | September 24, 2013

Excellent! Great story!

My dream... yet I don't think I could have played it so "cool". My wife and I are actually considering going to Freemont for our a factory tour as our wedding anniversary trip this year. She is almost as smitten as I am with Elon, Tesla, SpaceX, etc. Oh, and she wants to watch her other boyfriend, Colin Kapernick play that weekend while we're there too. We live in MN, so this wouldn't be a quick trip and certainly not within range of our Tesla ;-)

jbunn | September 24, 2013

I would enjoy that very much. Probably get all awkward after hugging him uncomfortably long, my babbling like an idiot.

Ok guys, Qs for Elon, should anyone get into a similar situation.

How will the model X be different from what we've seen in the prototypes?

Is Tesla seeing permitting/approval issues with their Supercharger sites? Is it taking longer to build out than initially thought, and is Tesla putting in more resources to speed up rollout?

What's causing all the buggy software updates?

akikiki | September 25, 2013

I am extremely jealous. Congrats

Tiebreaker | September 25, 2013

Way to go, Werle!

How 'bout them matching shirts/jeans? Just a tad bit creepy...

NomoDinos | September 25, 2013

jbunn - +1. Glad I wasn't there, it would have been monumentally awkward for everyone in the room.

"Remember that time you started Space X?... that was AWESOME!!"

JZ13 | September 25, 2013

Tiebreaker - You are right! We've been giving him a hard time about that. haha Maybe it subconsciously made Elon like him more?

Jamon | September 25, 2013

NoMoDinos LOL!! I love the Chris Farley memories!

NomoDinos | September 25, 2013

Jamon - can always count on you to not leave me hanging :)

Jamon | September 25, 2013

Yeah NoMo - something tells me we could have had a lot of fun together as college roommates!

NomoDinos | September 26, 2013

Haha! No doubt. Now does your screen name mean "Jam on!", or are you simply proclaiming your love of ham? Either way, most excellent.

Jamon | September 26, 2013

Lol! Closer to the latter. It's intended to be the Spanish pronunciation (ha-mone) which does indeed mean "ham". The nickname evolved from spanish Benjamin (ben-ha-meen) to Benjamon (long explanation). We decided it loosely translates to Ben Bacon, and the nickname stuck!

Benz | September 27, 2013

Both LG and Samsung are going to produce battery cells, or will it be just one of them?

Brian H | September 27, 2013

Both, it seems.

Benz | September 27, 2013

That's good news. How soon will they start production? 2013 or 2014?

JZ13 | September 27, 2013

Elon gave no more details to Werle.

mlnewman | September 27, 2013

What a great story. Thanks for sharing!

NomoDinos | September 27, 2013

Jamon - all the best college stories somehow incorporate bacon :)

Benz - I read that Panasonic also pledged to significantly ramp up production of its own battery supply. Taken together, it looks like Tesla may be able to produce many times their current output. That would definitely be a huge step towards showing justification for the stock price and ability to meet demand (especially with the new models coming!)

JZ13 - I think your buddy is lucky that security wasn't involved :) Really glad he did, though, we are all better for it. Thanks again!

That is me in the shot with Elon, it was quite an experiance!

Check out this link, I call this one "Priceless"

NomoDinos | October 1, 2013

Werly_1 - YOU DA MAN. Seriously, that was balls to split off from the group. Nicely done!

Brian H | October 1, 2013

Saw that clip 3 yrs ago. I like my video a bit fresher.

JZ13 | October 1, 2013

It's great to hear the skeptics of 3 years ago and to put it in perspective of where we are today. I can't wait to watch the skeptics of today in 2016. John Peterson are you reading this????????????

Brian H | October 1, 2013

Dupe post. Please don't. Video is 3½ yrs old. Yawn.

DigitalSavant | October 2, 2013

Well, you know, I'm actually glad the video was posted. Not only is it a good trip down memory lane, but I had never seen that particular clip.
