I love my Tesla S BUT

I love my Tesla S BUT

First I would like to say that the car itself works wonderfully, its the accessories that need attention

I would like to have these things improved:

1. The blue tooth phone is not hands free. In my last car if I wanted to use voice commands I would say call X's cell and it would. The car does not differentiate between the multiple phones the person I am calling has, so I have to choose which means I have to tap the screen to choose.

2. The screen on the dashboard is too sensitive. If you just graze your hand over the face of the screen on comes the air conditioner .

3. I have a moon roof. Although it is UV glass the sun beats down and heats the interior of the car. An easy manual cover to slide over the glass would be a good temporary fix. Later there should be a motorized opaque cover to shield us from the heat.

4. The Dome light has nothing but on or off. Unless I am missing something you have to use the scree to turn on and off the dome lights and the map lights.

If anyone knows about fixes coming down the pike that would be awesome!

#3 Tint your pano with limo tint.

danej | July 6, 2013

You can turn on/off the map lights just by pushing them. The light itself is it's button.

carlk | July 6, 2013

I just read the tint thread. Certain films can shield up to 98.5% of the heat. You can have one put on your pano roof to solve the heat problem if you think the OEM glass, which I believe shields about 90% of the heat, is not enough.

cfaltman | July 6, 2013

The moon roof is very darkly tinted with UV protection. That isn't enough. It is still glass that radiates.

I am talking about automatic for the dome lights. The map lights can be handled manually but it would be best if all of them go on at night when the door is opened and off when the door is closed, like most other cars.

cfaltman | July 6, 2013

Thank you carlk for your advice. I think that Tesla should look into this rather than I. :-) | July 6, 2013

#4 - just push the reading light. It toggles on-off on each press. No need to go to the screen.

#5 - Not sure how a single lens camera can have depth perception. People do have depth perception because of two eyes. Mine camera works fine, and is about the same others (GMC, Lexus, Infiniti, etc.). If you're looking for a 3D screen and double cameras, I'm not aware of any manufacture has done that yet, and the cost could be very high.

If this is the first time you've ever seen a backup camera, they all use a very wide angle lens so you can see the most possible. You should get used to it fairly quickly.

That's not to say parking sensors have some value too. It's an option on European MS deliveries, and I expect we'll see it in the USA this fall as an option. I installed my own front parking sensors.

Klaus | July 6, 2013

Dome/reading lights go on when the door is opened and off when the car is put into either drive or reverse. They will also extinguish after a certain time on their own if you just sit there in park, at which time you can select them individually by pushing them. After driving, once you push park the lights will also come on.

Klaus | July 6, 2013

As for #1, have you considered the steering whell controls or perhaps listing the phone numbers individually?

danej | July 6, 2013

In regards to the backup camera, what he means is that it should include guide lines, like most other vehicles. This is a shortcoming for Tesla, and it limits the usefulness of the backup camera.

Along with a lack of park distance sensors and the large size of the Tesla it is challenging to navigate in tight spaces when compared with other vehicles of its class.

(TL;DR: I backed my Tesla into my Porsche. $900 each to fix bumpers.)

Klaus | July 6, 2013

I live in Florida and up til now have had no concerns over the pano roof. I've made several lengthy trips in the middle of the day and honestly sometimes forget that the pano roof even exits. No additional tint needed for me up there, but I did tint all the other windows to help reflect the heat.

Carefree | July 6, 2013

The heat is NOT coming from the Pano. I live in sizzling hot Phoenix (112F on Monday) and the Pano roof is no problem whatsoever. You need to tint the windows - esp. the rear hatch. That'll solver your heat problem.

AmpedRealtor | July 6, 2013

@ Carefree, any suggestions on who to trust a Model S with tinting here in the Phoenix area?

Carefree | July 6, 2013

I went to the tint wizard. He did a great job. He's near the Scottsdale airport. He's done a bunch of Teslas already.

ThomasK | July 6, 2013

If you look at the bottom of the screen, you see the bumper of the S. using that as the reference, you can get the rear end of the car literally to an inch of whatever you are backing up against.

gocken1 | July 6, 2013

Cactus window tint, also in North Scottsdale, did a great job with my tint.

negarholger | July 6, 2013

I LOVE the backup camera. It tells you exactly were you are, how far you are away from the car behind you and if you are - as usual - have two big SUVs left and right you can look around the corner and what is coming. Love it, love it, love it. People who can not see the value of the backup camera must suffer from an extreme case of distracted driving like shouting on the cell phone, playing Angry Birds on the Iphone or texting some nonsense while manovering the vehicle.

skymaster | July 6, 2013

Yes, the Tesla Model S backup camera is awesome!!

olanmills | July 6, 2013

I love my Tesla S BUTT.

It's pretty good looking from all angles though, really.

fuellss | July 6, 2013

Cfaltman - Did you actually see the car prior to your purchase? Sounds like all of your concerns should had been part of your homework prior to purchase.

J.T. | July 7, 2013

Though many make this comment, and I admit I have made it, too, I find it to be unnecessarily antagonistic.
Have you ever been in love with a girl/guy when you knew nothing about them?
It's my guess that if you have you weren't checking their bank balance, family history or eating habits. All you had to go on was how you felt.

For many buying a Tesla is no different.

skymaster | July 7, 2013

I love my Tesla S BUTT.

Its really good looking from the side view mirrors.

This means I am driving and grinnnnninnnnng!!!

carlk | July 7, 2013

@AmpedRealtor Did you have a chance to read the tint thread? I don't know what you're going to get but it seems the new PhotoSync tint film is the very best for heat shieding.

@jtodtman You're absolutely right. However I got the feeling that op does not really love that girl.

AmpedRealtor | July 7, 2013

@ carlk, thanks for the tip! I will be getting my car in August and will be looking to have the windows tinted. I appreciate the help.

narkose | July 7, 2013

For a non-owner, you have way too much to say. Happy to hear your comments after you have experienced the reality of the vehicle. Sure hope you never need to hand up your sport coat before attempting to get a listing.

NomoDinos | July 7, 2013

@ skymaster - "I was very disappointed by the rear-view camera. I was under the impression that it gave me a better view of the MS's rear."

Xerogas | July 7, 2013

I'm not in front of my touchscreen right now, but doesn't the dome light have a setting that lets you switch between automatic and on/off? Like others on this thread, my dome lights come on and off automatically just like any other car, and they dim out nicely at the appropriate time.

tobi_ger | July 7, 2013

Just wondering: is this maybe a difference from standard to tech package?

Captain_Zap | July 7, 2013

I think you are right Xerogas. But, I'd have to go look at my car's screen to be sure. I've been through a few updates and things change on the fly.

Mathew98 | July 8, 2013

Why are people obsessed with my MC red's butt? I get nervous when so many ICE drivers try to kiss it on a daily basis. I always leave extra room in front of my car so I can creep forward a little bit when these @ss kissers get too close for comfort.

BTW, the MS also has a nasty front end and awesome curves from the side. What's not to envious about?

I assume the OP is a newbie and don't know how to configure the car's feature just yet. It seems like we're getting one of these rehashed set of complaints every other day.

cloroxbb | July 8, 2013

Pretty sure Amped IS an owner. Double check your facts and refrain from your elitest attitude.

AmpedRealtor | July 8, 2013

@narkose, my vehicle is currently being built end I expect to take delivery in August. I'm not sure I understand your sport coat comment, but okay. :)

cloroxbb | July 9, 2013

He really seems to hate Real Estate agents.

J.T. | July 9, 2013

Don't we all! :-)

Mel. | July 9, 2013

cloroxbb, so you are pretty sure Amped is an owner. Do you kind telling us where you got this information?

Mel. | July 9, 2013

Mind. Ah

Brian H | July 9, 2013

Amped is a reserver due to get his car in a month or few.
