Official response from Tesla

Official response from Tesla

I response to the following question submitted on the Investor relations section of the website, This is the response received.

When can we expect announcements regarding progress on the Model S such as results of crash testing or upgraded delivery dates? Also when are announcements regarding the model X to be expected

We will unveil the Model X on February 9th.
We will provide a status update on the Model S, on our Q4'11 earnings release in mid-February.

I suppose if I wanted to be critical, I would say that the second response answers another question- not the one asked. That is a common approach to avoiding answers to untimely questions. I'm not convinced this addresses our interest in the design studio update or the pricing of options.

ncn | December 15, 2011

Actually this kind of does say something: it says we won't get more definitive pricing and information stuff before mid-February.

ncn | December 15, 2011

Though apparently from other information that's not true. So this was just a completely non-responsive answer.

Jason S | December 15, 2011

Given the questions re: Model S, could be the results won't be known till the Feb call.

Pricing could happen anytime really.

Subject: Investor Question About Model S Options Announcement Date

I'm a TSLA stockholder from Fremont, CA, and I've also reserved a Model S (# 4,491).

My question is when does Tesla plan to announce Model S options and pricing? Elon has been quoted saying before the end of 2011, which is almost over. Surely, if you're able to announce the Model X will be unveiled Feb. 9th, you must know when Model S options and pricing will be announced?

Many reservation and stockholders have been wondering about this as we get closer to the holidays. If you have a date, that would be great to give them confidence everything is proceeding as they expect.

They are also asking when the rest of the Model S options will be added to the "Design Center" on the website.

Thanks in advance!

I only removed my full name and email from the exchange above. I don't think it will be announced immediately before/after holidays, so the possible dates are: 12/16, 12/19-22, 12/27-29. We'll just have to wait and see. I guess they are still finalizing something, so can't give us a date yet like they can for Model X unveil on Feb. 9th, 2012.

12/22 falls in nicely with the Winter expectation

Liz G | December 16, 2011

I'm guessing 1/1/12. Start the New Year off right!

JoeFee | December 16, 2011

They will take it to the wire .... Fri 12/30

Jason S | December 16, 2011

12/28, just cause there will be technical problems found before holidays then fixed couple days later. | December 16, 2011

When its announced, they are going to want some press about it I imagine, so cutting it too close to New Years or XMAS may get that news overshadowed by holiday news, so I'm guessing that it will be on the 22nd too.

engle | December 17, 2011

I used to think we'd get our options packages and pricing on Thurs. Dec. 22nd, but after just reading "in the next few weeks" in George's letter, I'm now going with Thurs., Dec. 29th. Why Thursday? They already announced Thursday, Feb. 9th for Model X Unveil, so they seem to like Thursdays...

Holidays and other conflicts – are there any big holidays coming up? Is there other seasonal news in your industry that will affect your press release pickup? Don’t send press releases the week before or after Christmas, unless you have timely holiday news.

William13 | December 17, 2011

Dec 29 because all the Tesla employees will actually be able to relax better before the announcement than afterward when they need to answer many questions.
