Red Light Close Call

PBEndo - After you

PBEndo - This one appeared to be intentional. I am following a slow driver in the HOV lane who is failing to keep up with traffic during rush hour. After he skipped several opportunities to change lanes, I signaled and started to pass on the right. He waited for me to commit to the lane and then starts to change lanes right into me, while slowing down even more! After I passed on the left, I wished I had a rear camera recording all of the other cars having to go around him as he was now blocking the other lane and going even slower than before. He was probably too busy cursing at me to notice.
No problem

HOV Lane is nice during Rush Hour!

Emfeder - Motorcycle accident in front of me due to parking car opening door into traffic.

The action starts at 2:00.

PBEndo - Had another close call this morning. I was the only car traveling in the 3 Eastbound lanes of a 6 lane divided road. A car slowly turns onto the road ahead of me. This car has 3 lanes to choose from and only one has a car traveling in it. As you might guess he pulls into my lane. As I get closer I realize I will need to pass in the middle lane since he is going very slow..wait...WTF?....why is he braking...OMG....HE'S STOPPED....IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD....BLEEP...BLEEP...BLEEP. Then the school bus decides it is time to get off the sidelines and join the action......

@Zap
didn't know this until fairly recently, but I'm told it's illegal to yield your right of way

Captain_Zap | July 4, 2014

I was taught that there is no such thing as a "right of way".

tezzla.SoCal | July 4, 2014

I always give .5 seconds, then take the right-of-way! btw: this makes my wife very angry :)

Captain_Zap | July 4, 2014

I'm a bona fide "blue tarp camper" and "goose bumped beach bum". My stack of firewood is a masterpiece too.

My girlfriends and I would go camping in the rainforest all the time. I smile ever time I see that video.

I went to the International Kite Festival two years ago in August for my birthday in weather just like you see in the beach bum video.

I would never be caught in wool socks and sandals though.

SeattleSid | July 4, 2014

Cap'n, whereas I agree on principle, I have varicose vanity and need to wear support socks (refuse to say "hose") with my Birkies. Not wool, though; never wool.

Captain_Zap | July 4, 2014

Not Texas law to blame. Washington.

"The law says who must yield the right-of-way, it does not give anyone the right-of-way. You must do everything you can to avoid an accident regardless of circumstances."

Thomas N. | July 4, 2014

Bighorn - This is true in California. I have a friend who was ticketed at a 4-way stop-sign intersection for yielding her right-of-way. She said he was a motorcycle officer hidden and watching the intersection. She thought another car and her arrived at the same time and she signaled for them to go. He pulled her over and told her that it was her right of way because she arrived first and it was illegal to yield that to the other driver. $275 ticket. Happened around 18 months ago in Orange County, California.

Captain_Zap | July 4, 2014

I just wish that they would enforce the "Keep Right Except To Pass" laws. Daydreamers in the passing lanes cause huge back ups on the freeway.

PBEndo | July 4, 2014

+1 Cap'n

judimasters | July 4, 2014

@Captain_Zap I arrived back to WA 2 years ago after being away for 12 years. I forgot those old Pemco commercials. Thanx for a good chuckle.
By the way I have a photo I want to submit to Pemco. It is of a guy on I5 southbound in the Federal Way area with a bicycle strapped on his motorcycle in the HOV lane in the rain. The caption would be, "Soaked Motorcycle/Bicycle Commuter Guy, You're one of us!"

Brian H | July 4, 2014

I was taught a driver on your right has precedence.

PBEndo | July 5, 2014

That's the rule, though it is widely ignored or misunderstood, IMO.

johncrab | July 5, 2014

I have driven a lot in Germany and do they ever enforce the traffic laws there. You stay out of the right lane unless passing. I was going into Frankfurt from the South at 110 in the center land and was passed by a motorcycle going so fast that I heard the Dopper shift beautifully as he went by. Where I live, even the cops ignore all conventions and it bugs me. People run reds and sit through greens, turn into the wrong lanes and have no clue about the rules of a roundabout! Some states do better than others but we need a common platform, nationwide and a common standard of enforcement.

PBEndo | July 5, 2014

Don't you mean "you stay out of the left lane unless passing"?
or "you stay in the right lane unless passing"?

PBEndo | July 5, 2014

I have driven in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, and I have been a passenger on the Autobahns in Germany. The driver discipline was far better in those countries than in the States. At first glance, it often seemed dangerous due to a higher rate of speed by some of the drivers. But, I felt safer very quickly when I saw how everybody seemed to follow the rules, especially concerning passing on the left and slower traffic staying right.

I kind of like that.

Joshua Burstyn | July 8, 2014

@Emfeder:

I don't know if lane sharing is illegal where this was filmed, but the motorcyclist should be more careful. Nevertheless he did get a bum deal by the guy with his eyes on crooked, opening the door into his path.

Mark E | July 9, 2014

i like the dashcams that show the MPH - i've been thinking about getting one, but havent spent enough time researching it. Do they all have the capability to do this or just certain ones?

Thomas N. | July 9, 2014

Motorcyclist in the wrong. Driver opened door in a legal parking spot. Red car freaked out and stopped in the middle of the road so that he wouldn't hit door. Motorcyclist not paying attention, straddling lanes at higher rate of speed than traffic, notices too late that red car has stopped and has no route for evasive action other than laying down the bike at low speed.

I used to ride. You have to think like everybody is out to get you and ride accordingly. Eventually I became too old and too cautious and it just wasn't fun anymore.

JPPTM | July 9, 2014

mb30--you need a unit with built in GPS to be able to track/record MPH. FWIW some Blackvue units have this feature (like my 550 dual cam), some don't. And due to the heavily shielded front windshield on the S, my GPS lock is intermittent at best.

Are you sure you want to record your speed? Guess you must scrupulously stick to the legal speed limit.

Just certain cameras have the MPH function. My BlackVue has trouble getting a GPS signal thru the windshield so my MPH is hit & miss.

Annother red light runner

PBEndo | October 25, 2014

After this one, the driver pulled along side and yelled at me for honking my horn at her. I calmly told her that she almost caused an accident.
She then said "My fault? Bullsh*t! I was turning, the white car was behind me. Where were you?!?!?" while pointing her finger at me.
I responded, "I, along with the right of way, was in the lane you were turning into."
She yelled "You weren't there, I didn't see you there!"
My response "Exactly!"

Close Call

PBEndo
I've been a motorcyclist for 33 years now and have learned that most motorists are out to kill you. Something else I've learned is how to minimise not being seen, and when it's a not a good idea to do something that may actually be legal.

In the video above I would not have changed lanes at that place. From the video it appears (and I'll admit camera Angels can be deceptive), that you were close to the SUV in front and changed lanes just before the side road where the car came from. Personally I'd consider that an unsafe lane change since you were effectively hidden from sight until the last minute.

I'm not saying it's your fault if there was an accident, but I'd understand how you may not have been seen.

After a number of close calls and 2 accidents when I was young, I drive and ride quite defensively now, thinking about how others may or may not see me to keep away from trouble. It doesn't always work, but it really helps.

PBEndo | October 25, 2014

@Mark E
I fully agree with driving defensively - that is how I managed to avoid hitting this car. As far as it being an "unsafe lane change since I was hidden from sight", I would ask you to view the video again. Camera angle has nothing to do with it. I can clearly see the other driver before she starts moving from the parking lot into my lane. If I can see her before she starts moving, she can see me before she starts moving. Her failure to look does not make my lane change unsafe.

Also, I had to change lanes at this place if I wanted to get on the interstate on-ramp, though I think that is irrelevant. If I have the right of way and I signal my intention to turn, I should be able to do that wherever I choose it to be appropriate.

Mark E | October 26, 2014

Autocorrect made Angels out of angles!

I've watched the video a few times again and would say that yes, she *should* have seen you, but it's not a great place to change lanes. What I can't see is how much time you were indicating - which can make a big difference.

The video of yours that really scares me is the red light runner.

PBEndo | October 26, 2014

Red Light Runner was indeed scary. I had the whole family in the car and everybody screamed. It was a lot closer than it looks on the video.

HOV Intruder was not only scary, but it made me wonder what "autopilot" would have done under the same circumstances. Would the car have moved into the emergency lane to avoid the accident or would it have just applied the brakes (a split second faster than a human) resulting in a slightly less serious accident?

danej | October 26, 2014

Lane change in (or just prior to) an intersection isn't illegal in most states (it's not in CA), but I remember being taught that it's a bad idea. NO ONE EXPECTS A LANE CHANGE IN AN INTERSECTION!. =)

I suspect the reason it's such an issue is that the person entering the roadway has process a lot of inputs as they enter, such as pedestrians, oncoming traffic, signals, etc, and having folks changing lanes too is just another factor.

In this example she may have looked left and saw the lane was clear, then looked ahead and to the right for pedestrians and then gone. She wouldn't expect someone to move into her lane, which was previously clear.
