30 Days To Transfer Ownership!

30 Days To Transfer Ownership!

My first post on the Tesla forums and it is unfortunately to complain.

I’ve been a lurker in the forums for a number of years. Tesla has always been a dream car for me that I never thought I would own. Last week my dream came true.

I purchased a secondhand 2015 Model S 70 with 49k miles with autopilot. Every morning when I wake up I still can’t believe it’s in my driveway!

I want to be able to use the Tesla app to turn on the climate control and battery warmer before I get in the shower. After a bit of research I determined to use the app I would need to have Tesla transfer the ownership of the vehicle into my Tesla account. I contacted support via telephone on Dec 22nd. I followed up shortly after with the email to customer support with all of the supporting documentation to transfer ownership. The agent on the phone said it would take 3 business days.

Fast forward to today (4 business days later). I still have not received an email response and logging into my Tesla account does not show my vehicle.

I contacted support again this evening and was told that it may take up to 30 days to transfer ownership. Has anyone else been quoted this length of time? It seems outrageous to me that it would take that long.

It is the only thing left to complete my dream car purchase.

I hope someone at Tesla is reading this, as I am really bummed out about the length of time.

.

rxlawdude | December 28, 2018

That's downright absurd. I'd escalate.

shane.grogan | December 28, 2018

How do I Escalate?

rxlawdude | December 28, 2018

While I don't normally recommend this, use the Roadside Service number.

I have found those lines staffed by people that actually care and can hook you up with the right person or department.

30 days is unacceptable.

shane.grogan | December 28, 2018

Roadside service folks did nothing except quote me 30 days :(. This is unacceptable IMO.

I have another story regarding my attempt at purchasing a CPO from Tesla. I ended up cancelling the order after repeated emails and phone calls regarding paperwork needed for financing. I’ll save that story for another thread.

I hate to say it but Tesla needs to get their customer service act together. If the car wasn’t so incredible there is no way would deal with this.

bryan.hopkins | December 28, 2018

@shane.grogan - I feel your pain. I had a major blowup with delivery specialist today over financing. I got it straightened out by calling my sales consultant. The delivery side of the house pulls a hard vacuum! They really do need to work on the customer experience.

akikiki | December 28, 2018

shane, do you know who owned your car before you? Can you find out? If yes, then contact that person and ask them if they are no longer using the account. Because if not, ask them for the password where that Model S is still showing. Then log in, change the email address, log out and back in again. Change the password and Ta-Daaaaa, you have an account with your car in it and can access it via the app.

If the person is still using the app, - 29 days and counting.

seuhus | December 29, 2018

Shane, I'm in the same boat. I bought a used 85D and I'm 2 weeks into waiting for app access. I was able to chat with a rep once on line, but the chat box doesn't appear anymore.

Let us know if you "crack the code" at getting it done.

jerrykham | December 29, 2018

Yes, unfortunately this is how long it takes - if you are lucky actually. It seems that department is perpetually overwhelmed. It is the same group that handles adding app access for a spouse with their own account (we have a model S under my account and a model 3 under my wife's account). When we asked them to add app access for me to her model 3 it took 7 weeks. SEVEN WEEKS. Again it is the same ownership group that you are waiting on. Hopefully it only takes you 30 days. If you search historical threads you'll see complaints about this going back quite a ways.

TeslaTap.com | December 29, 2018

@shane - I agree 30 days seems a bit long, although so far it has been 4 days, so no one really knows if it will be 5 days or 30 days. Considering you have paid nothing to Tesla, it's clear it's a low priority task, as Tesla is likely far more focused on customers who pay them actualy money. Perhaps not fair, but it is true of most businesses that want to be profitable.

While I hesitate to suggest this to Tesla, if Tesla offered a $20 account transfer fee, it might be worth it to staff a position to only handle transfers and eliminate delays.

EVRider | December 30, 2018

The leased Model S I returned to Tesla 3+ weeks ago still shows up on My Tesla and in the mobile app (I’ve requested that they remove it). I don’t know if anyone else bought the car yet, but I guess it’s a slow process.

Bill_75D | December 30, 2018

@EVRider - Use the app to honk the horn once every 10 seconds for about an hour. That should get the ball rolling on this.

rxlawdude | December 30, 2018

@Bill LOL!

EVRider | December 30, 2018

@Bill: Even though the old car is still in my app, they disabled remote access right away, so I can’t annoy them with the horn. Good idea though.

scabello800 | December 30, 2018

It took a month to transfer a tesla to my dad. It wasnt a big deal to share my login while I waited but what if it was to a stranger? That would suck

When I spoke to a Tesla rep about the delay you know what he said? ‘It just takes us a few minutes to do... but we are very busy with these requests so we have a backlog”
They could hire 5 people snd solve this problem...

PeterNikola | December 31, 2018

I sent the e-mail with the proof of purchase of my december 2015 Model S and the copy of the Dutch registration. authority.
After two days I called Tesla service and the friendly serviceman confirmed the reception of my e-mail when I gave him the date and time of the e-mail.
He said that he would transfer the ownership immediately, which he indeed did and while I was on the phone, I received the e-mail confirming the transfer.

That's how it can be done as well. I am more than satisfied with our Dutch servicecentre IIII
I guess, that's how Elon expects it to be.

SnoR | December 31, 2018

I sent in the required info on 12/10. Never received an eMail response. I followed up via the chat on the web site and was told "it was underway". Long story short, on 12/28 I went on the chat again to ask for a status and was told "I would be all set tomorrow." About 2 hours later, I got a "welcome to Tesla" eMail. It showed up under my account and I had mobile app access to it. So, with 2x nagging, it took 3 weeks. This was a 3rd party sell, not CPO.

mkayce | April 1, 2019

Help - It has been 3 weeks for me and nothing! I call & email them almost everyday - How long has it been taking and any short cuts as of April 1, 2019?

wefdenver | April 2, 2019

I'm having the same problem except after emailing support asking how I can transfer ownership of my 2016 Model S I have not gotten a response (7 days). To prepare, what documentation do I need to supply them with? A copy of registration? Thanks in advance.

maxse | April 3, 2019

All the info is here - the key is to send a NEW e-mail and not reply to an e-mail from support. I am still waiting as well, going on 4 biz days now...

drift | April 4, 2019

Thirty days would be great . Going on 2 1/2 months. Have resubmitted the paper work and contacted Tesla. Nothing but crickets.

Sonofman | April 4, 2019

On my wife's car it took less than a week by sending a new email with the docs.

jbgregg | April 4, 2019

I recently bought my 4th Tesla an delivery was a nightmare. One of the cars was from a used car dealership and getting that one on to my app took a long time. The new model S I just got had a terrible delivery, but by the time I got home my trade in model S was off my app and the new one was on it. Something went well at least.

ashinbay | May 30, 2019

Did all of you get your ownership transferred finally? anyone still waiting? I just started mine on 05/28. 2 days and counting...

BarryQ | May 30, 2019

Took 4 business days to add an additional car (used, but not from Tesla) to my account.

ashinbay | May 31, 2019

I was just reading some of the comments above. I had to respond this one. TeslaTap.com doesn't make any sense. He/She is saying that companies only care about customers who directly pay them. That is not how companies operate these days. They strive for customer success whether they pay them directly and or indirectly. There are companies who even go above and beyond to be socially and environmentally responsible, not just only about their customers who pay them directly. Besides, Tesla benefits from used car sales through sale of parts and services.

The only good arguments why ownership transfer might be taking long is that the department which takes care of this is overwhelmed with the requests.

ashinbay | June 3, 2019

Ownership transfer complete. Took 4 business days :-)

Sondavid | June 3, 2019

I was stressed at purchase, I bought privately, my credit union sent the 50k to CapitalOne, the previous owners lien holder. They drug their feet 2 weeks sending out the title. It showed up in the previous owner’s mail! Meanwhile, I could not plate the car in Indiana without the title. Once I sent the documentation to Tesla, it was another couple weeks before I could register with them and use the app, because all they would do is send out that form email. Phoning and chatting in real time was no avail. I did get a service rep to assure me they would not leave me stranded, as I got used to the car, had one dead key fob, key not in car message etc. I have not really had an issue though, and the driveway service guys are absolutely spectacular, competent and enthusiastic, answering ALL concerns, volunteering good will repairs. They did the Takata airbag recall in my driveway, less than an hour.

Teslavie | June 3, 2019

Thanks to this forum, I found out that you had to send a copy of ypur driver's license and the title to register.

Once I sent it, it took 2 days.

Earlier, I had tried emailing and no response for 2 weeks.

No one picks the phone when you call.

With all their troubles, Tesla should be laser focused on customer service.

leestancy92807 | June 4, 2019

I say you get a good looking girl and streamline as you drive in your tesla and it will probably make it run a lot smoother...better yet try to come for 10 minutes while your at it.

spohn77 | June 11, 2019

I bought a used 2018 Model S 75D privately on Monday, 06/03. That night (around midnight) I emailed a copy of my drivers license, temporary registration, and all of the other info listed on their website. I received an email the next morning explaining that they had received my request and would forward it to the accounts team, and stated that it would take 3-5 business days. On Friday I called to get an update, and was told that it would take about a week. Today marks one week (even though there was the weekend in between). Still waiting, and anxiously checking email throughout each day, wanting to order the autopilot. Hopefully tomorrow!

fnaioom | June 23, 2019

same issue as above. any one aware what is the best phone number where you can talk to a life person?

carbuf222 | June 30, 2019

Im having the very same issue. It's been 9 days since I emailed my info and all I got back is an automated response. I tried calling to speak with someone to make sure they got it but I just got VM. I left a message 2 different days and nothing...Sent 2 more emails to support ....automated response. I purchased my S through a used car dealership and love the car except for this. I was considering trading in my X-5 for a new model 3 but I am concerned about service for the lack of. I don't know If I want all of my transportation from the same company if I can't get any type of help. From reading the forum it looks like this is a common issue ?

steveg1701 | June 30, 2019

I bought my car from a used car dealer also, emailed the documentation and got the auto-reply. About a week later I got another email saying the transfer was complete and it was done with! Only hitch was that for about a day my account showed 3 cars: my "new" one, the one I traded in, and somebody elses model X but it all got straightened out pretty quickly. YMMV

shoot - sorry for the triple post, darned slow website!

aeg0276 | July 1, 2019

Question, what email address are you all using to send the documents to? The ownership transfer pages to log into your Tesla account and contact them from there but there is no way to attach files via that contact method...

2015P90DI | July 1, 2019

Didn't see this the first time around in December. But 30 days! And you're complaining??? I could have only dreamed to have my latest car properly transferred in 30 days! LOL. I forget the exact timing now, but it was ridiculous at how long it took and the reasons for Tesla delaying. They definitely need a better process.

Ownership Transfer Support

Our ownership transfer process supports new owners who purchased a Tesla from a private owner or third-party.

To request an ownership transfer, start by creating a Tesla Account. Next, send an email to CustomerSupport@tesla.com from the same email address used to create your Tesla Account, including:

Color copy or photo of your driver’s license or state/province ID
Copy or photo of your title or registration
If registering under a business, include your business card with your name and company name
Email address used to create your Tesla Account, which will link to your car
Mailing address
Phone number
Type of purchase (from a private owner or third-party)

steveg1701 | July 1, 2019

I followed those instructions and got pretty quick results. I included in the e-mail a request to transfer my old car out and got an automated email asking for confirmation a couple of days later
