help, advice- performance

Bought a model s one month ago and continue to be amazed- a really wonderful driving experience. I went from a Prius to the model s and thought I didn't need to go to the model s performance and am now thinking that I may have made a mistake. Should I (and how would I) go back and trade for the P? Help, advice, and thoughts would be appreciated.

Drive the P first... you may be surprised about the elevated noise levels - probably because of 21-inch wheels. I just drove a P85+ as a loaner and although it is crazy fast - I still cannot justify the extra cost and the noise level was a real downer - I am an old Benz driver and tend towards that level of luxury. I also am a quiet car guy and chose 19-inch wheels as a result. Also, we live in Colorado and it is pretty tough to get 21-inch snow tires. You should also price a tire cost of the P85+ it is ridiculous.

It will cost you a bunch - only you can decide how much that is worth to you. For me, 0-60 in ~5s is good enough, even though I take it to the track several times a year. If I could have bought just the performance upgrade without all the other things that went with it (when I bought mine, you paid for leather, 21" wheels, etc as part of it).

I think he may be talking about going from an S85 to a P85. In that case the noise difference between the two will be much less. Both will have 19" tires and the same suspension.

I have a P85 with air on 19" Primacy's. I hope I get to drive an S85 some day and then I'll be able to comment on the power differences.

I know I drive my P85 like a jacka$$ from 0-60 quite a bit and would miss it terribly if I didn't have that straight-line acceleration.

The big difference in performance between the S and P85 is the take off from standing still. The standard S85 is quick and way quicker than a Prius. It is almost as quick as the BMW M5 after 30mph
However it is not nearly as quick from zero to 30 as the P85. Motor trend tested a S85 zero to 60 in 5.0 sec and to 100 in 10.8 and the P85 at 3.9 to 4.0 sec and 9.5 to 9.7 sec respectively (depending on which test you look at).
So the S85 is about a quick as a 2010 corvette with automatic transmission!
Having said that, the P85 will blast just about any car off the road from stand still and if you are a Prius driver will probably scare you.

I have an S85 and recently got a P85 as a loaner. You can feel the difference in extra power the P has between 0-30mph. Above 30mph they feel pretty much the same. If I were to do it again I would have spent the extra money and got the P85. I feel the P gives you power at all ranges, whenever you want it. In my mind that was the way Tesla designed the car to be. Now do you really need all that power? Absolutely not, but it's still nice to know it's there...

I have been driving an S85 for the last 6500 miles and have a P85 loaner over the weekend. A couple of comments:

1) The 0-60 type acceleration on the P is breathtaking, but for the acceleration that is typical of my daily driving 30-60mph (freeway merge) or 60-80mph (freeway passing), the difference is there but much less noticeable.

2) Road noise and harshness is increased--not annoyingly so, but it is noticeable. This is not an apples-to-apples comparison since my regular ride is 19" with air suspension and the loaner is 21" with no air, so that is kinda worst case. I can imagine 21" wheels with air would be a good compromise

If I were to do it again, the $ difference between the cost of the P and the S is not much of an issue. However, I average ~24K miles a year on my daily driver and that is a lot of tires to be chewing through.

I came from a Prius to my 85 after test driving a 60 which was the fastest car I had ever driven.

After a month, the 85 doesn't seem as crazy fast as it did at first, except after I take my Prius out for a spin.

What I have concluded is I drive a lot faster in my MS; with the power, low noise, and smooth ride it just seems "normal" to be going 80, and rocketing from 25 to 80 when getting on the highway.

I'm glad I don't have the P, and I'm better off for it. At least I keep telling myself that. I think my tires are happier I don't have the P as well.

I have an S85. ive driven it 15k miles in 7mos. I've been thinking about the possibility of upgrading my S85 to a P85. Does anyone know if this is possible and how much.

There is several owners here and at TMC that upgraded to a P85.

Just be sure that you drive the P85+ before you commit to the P85.

You can upgrade a S85 to a P85 at the service center.

I was quoted $17,202.10 (including tax). I figure selling the car and buying a new one would cost me at least $20k, plus a lot of hassle. And I don't think you can get the vertical grain Obleche Matte anymore...

Yes, an S85 can be 3/4 upgraded to a P, but not a P+.

I test drove a P85 a few weeks ago. One thing is certain it's not "too fast". Just finalized a P85+ order. I did not get the chance to drive a + but according to Lola it's well worth the upgrade.

As for noise I don't believe there is a car at this performance level can be any more quite, or even as quite.

Is it possible to simply get a P inverter rather than all other options? My car goes into production within a week (I estimate)
I'm tempted to upgrade to "P" but I do not want red calipers,21" etc.

If so. How much?

I have a P85 without red calipers. You might ask. The red calipers are a new thing that were added on recently.

The P does have a different motor along with the different inverter. When I ordered I had the option to get 19" or 21" wheels.

P comes with 19" wheels. Red calipers are included but can be excluded, same as CF spoiler. It may be too late to change your order though. Look at the order form--it's pretty self-explanatory.

Thanks for that Bighorn. I was hoping to exclude the Alcantera, red calipers, cf wing and also NOT pay for them! lol!
I'd like to maybe have a "sleeper" A P85 with the look of an S85.

I'm going to call my DS Monday and see if they can Break out the inverter/drive motor out of that package and exclude all the extras so I don't have to pay for things I don't want.

Yeah, probably not happening. You'll pay full boat regardless of how much you exclude. It will still be a "sleeper" plus you can debadge. Alcantara is homeopathic if you have the pano, anyway.

I got lucky. I got my car before there were badges and when the spoilers were late. Tesla called when they came in and offered to put them on and I told them that I liked it just the way it was.

I think that Alcantara is a must if you go sans-pano.

My P85 w 19" and air was delivered last november with snow tires. It is impossible to floor it without wheelspin at anything below 25-30 mph. So I only hope the grip on summer tires will be sufficient to harness the raw power of this thing. Otherwise, the S85 would have been a better option ;-)

I had a chance to run a buddy in his S85. We then switched places so he could experience the run from my perspective.

There is a significant difference in the launch all the way through the 60 foot mark. The P is really brutal in comparison to the S. If launch and initial acceleration is your thing then you definitely want to go P. There is still a difference at highway speeds but nothing like that from zero to thirty.
