Elon just confirmed this via twitter, with this statement:
Roadster upgrade will enable non-stop travel from LA to SF -- almost 400 mile range. Details tmrw. Merry Christmas!

Not really a new Roadster. Upgraded battery, aerodynamics, rolling resistance. ~70 kWh. Upgrades.

I had been waiting for Roadster prices to fall so I could snap one up as a future very rare classic. 'Looks like that won't be happening.

@ampedup I was thinking the same thing but it's reassuring to know that Tesla takes care of its previous buyers. Makes me feel better about buying a Tesla!

As a roadster owner, I'm hoping they offer a lighter battery pack with existing range option. I don't think most roadster owners are driving their cars long distance. IMHO shaving a second off the 0-60 time would be awesome. In any case, I love way Tesla keeps their owners engaged and happy...like no other company.

Car is tuned for existing battery pack weight. Changing would affect stability.
It wouldn't be easy to reduce battery weight.

2008 Tesla Roadster Battery Pack = 56 kWh maximum capacity
2015 Tesla Roadster Battery Pack = 70 kWh maximum capacity
That's an increase of 14 kWh in maximum capacity of the Battery Pack.
14 kWh / 56 kWh = 25% increase
Would that be a correct calculation?

Or you could consider that the whole charge is not available so from a practical matter, if 90% is available:
2.5 model = 0.90 x 56 = 48.6 kWh
3.0 model = 0.90 x 70 = 63.0 kWh

There is nothing in that article about a new roadster. It is speculated that the announcement will be the long anticipated battery update.
More than one bad reporter is spreading that rumor.
I agree nothing definite.
Is this a better article?

Of course, another question is whether the new battery's weight density is the same.
