The perfect iPhone mount for the Model S?

The perfect iPhone mount for the Model S?

This looks like possibly the perfect iPhone mount for the Model S (if you have an iPhone 5). Too bad it doesn't come in black. I bet a little spray plasti-dip could fix that...

"Unlike the short, flaccid charging cables on the market, you can bend Trunk vertical to charge on the wall, bend it the other way and use GPS in the car, or straighten it out and put it in a pocket when you're on the move.

Why do you need all that cord? With Trunk, there is no wrapping, no tangling -- no mess."

Cool concept, but there's no way the small plug on the iPhone 5 is going to hold it upright in place over a few bumps.. plus the USB ports in the MS are verticle, so you'd have to twist it 90 degrees as well.

DTsea | May 22, 2013

you dont need to mount it. just plug it in and throw it on the floor. bluetooth, address book connect fine. Nav and internet are in the car anyway.... why do you want to look at the phone??

GeekEV | May 22, 2013

@cgiGuy - They specifically show it being used in a car, so I hope they've got the bumps covered. I'll let you know when I get mine.

@DTsea - If you didn't get the tech package, you don't get nav. Google Maps, yes, but not nav. Also, there are other media sources you might want to play and control that aren't built into the car! But, hey, if you don't need one - that's cool.

A little Velcro can fix some problems. Velcro comes in white or black colors now.

Here's how I handled this situation...... I removed the carpet liner from the bottom of the center console and cut a thin 1/4" slit in it to fit the charger cable. Then I drove a screw UP from the under side of the carpet into the bottom of this cradle. After putting the carpet back (it velcros down), the cable is hidden (except where it plugs into the car), and the cradle does not pull up when I retrieve my phone.

I saw this on MacRumors and also thought it would be a good solution instead of having the cable all over the place. Let us know how it works out, GeekEV.

I have used ProClips for the last ten years and absolutely love their solutions. I wrote them an email about vehicle mounts for Model S, but they are apparently a few months off from being able to offer one (although they have specifically identified Midel S owners who are willing to lend them cars for measurement, so they are definitely aware of the demand).

These phone mounts work great for my iPhone 5:

But you still need a way to mount those in the car, so unless you want to deface your Model S with makeshift screw holes, you'll have to wait for the vehicle mounts for Model S to be released.

Check out this Kickstarter project. WAY behind schedule, but should be good when they finally release it:

Which end does the weed go in?

The other end.

GeekEV: Update? How did it hold up under .7g acceleration?

GeekEV | June 17, 2013

@cgiGuy - The company making it got swamped with more orders than expected, so I haven't received mine yet. I think it shipped last week though, so I'll let you know soon!

GeekEV | June 17, 2013

It just arrived in the mail tonight. It's quite stiff and was a bit of effort to twist it 90°. So far my observation is that it's a bit loose in the USB socket (at least on the Model S) and might work better on a vertically oriented USB port (like those on the LEAF). I'll test out how it handles during driving and acceleration tomorrow and report back.

I bought one that you plug it to the vent of the car and it works beautifully nice and neat. Never falls off and strong enough for the G-force on the corners. And the good thing is bought it in Wal-Mart nice and cheap.

SteveTesla | June 17, 2013

I have this on in my current car (M3), and I think its minimalist design would look decent (for a phone mount) in the Tesla.

inverts | June 18, 2013

I like the air vent mount. How is BT connectivity up there? I use the phone to select playlists on Music and on Pandora. Hopefully, that will eventually be available through apps on the MS itself, but in the meantime we have to improvise a bit.
Thus far I keep the iPhone on the small shelf below, but it will fly off with sharp acceleration.

I had an email conversation with in Sweden about this. They told me that they have a prototype and are expecting to release it in the September timeframe.
That would align with Model S entering the European market with their first shipments.
I don't know about WW availability of Brodit, but have a look at their systems anyway.
I have been using it in both BMW and Jaguar and will buy it as soon as it is available.

Ciao; Jack

I was pretty impressed with the trunk on my morning commute. It held quite well despite reasonable efforts to shake it loose. Within the confines of what traffic would allow, I tried rapid acceleration, hard braking and sharp lane changes. Nothing shook the phone loose or cause it to droop significantly. Trunk is perhaps not perfect, but it's pretty decent. Particularly if you only want it occasionally because it's small and easy to tuck away.

mrspaghetti | June 18, 2013

Heh, "reasonable efforts to shake it loose." Any excuse to punch it :)

GeekEV: "But officer, I had to drive like that. I was testing my new iPhone holder..."

Sam_S | October 18, 2014

Just got a new iPhone 6 for the new Model S.

Any new solutions for phone holders in the Model S.

I connect Sirius/XM via Bluetooth every time I use the vehicle so a mount where I can change stations easily is a necessity.

I've used this mount for over a year - advantage is you can stash it easily.

borodinj | October 18, 2014

Here's what I great, and it just clips on to the lower bezel of the touch screen.

jmike9459 | April 3, 2015

Have you tried the imagnet? Been using it for some time now and it's been great.

Devin B | April 3, 2015

I also use the IO mount magnetic mount from ProClip USA.

Works great!

Check out the magnetic ball mount from Abstract Ocean (google it)
