http://qTes.la - A Web Portal For The Tesla Web Browser!

Hey Everybody,

Just thought I would point you guys to something I have been working on for a couple days:

http://qTes.la

You can find more details over at TMC Forums:
http://www.teslamotorsclub.com/showthread.php/29355-qTes-la

Or just check it out in your car or browser!

Let me know if anybody has questions or suggestions, but please respond on the post above as I do not actively monitor this forum.

Cheers,
Jared

Ugh just noticed the typo in the title .. and I thought I was so careful ..

Captain_Zap | April 1, 2014

What is its purpose? Is it secure?

JaredBanyard | April 1, 2014

What is it's purpose? It's for the car's browser. It's hard to do anything useful in it due to it's lack of performance and support for flash, silverlight, etc. This way you have a quick way of getting weather, national radar loops, news, etc.

Is it secure? What security do you want? What for?

bayoufilter.tx | April 1, 2014

Heh, I like the "Valet" page!

Jared, you can edit the title of your thread.

JaredBanyard | April 1, 2014

You can? Please let me know how!

Oh btw, if anybody is concerned about security, here is the source code:
https://github.com/JaredBanyard/qTes.la

hnashif | April 1, 2014

Thanks Jared. Works well for me.

J.T. | April 1, 2014

@Jared Go to the top of the page in the left corner. You'll see an edit link. You'll figure it out from there.

Thank you for your efforts with this. Haven't tried it yet but it looks very cool.

tezzla.SoCal | April 1, 2014

@Jared, I like it. Thanks.

JaredBanyard | April 1, 2014

Okay I've done quite a few iterations on it so far. The Stock page needs some major work at some point, but I have moved a real-time quote to the top right of the nav bar. Clicking on that takes you to the stock page.

Also made various graphical and interface tweaks.

I suppose I should think about making it support international..

Cheers,
Jared

J.T. | April 1, 2014

Looked at it on the way to dinner. I think it's great. Very responsive. Looking forward to whatever modifications you make. Thanks.

JaredBanyard | April 1, 2014

Great! If anybody has some severe weather alerts show up, I would like to see a picture if possible :)

Thanks!
Jared

robapodaca | April 1, 2014

I was checking it out on my laptop, and saw that you have the Plugshare app as an option (yea!). Can you add WAZE? and does your browser interact with GPS for realtime location (like for updating your location in plugshare; or for using WAZE for navigation?)

Robert Hodgen | April 1, 2014

Nicely done!

Thanks

JaredBanyard | April 1, 2014

First, yes, Geolocation is supported in the Tesla browser and gets your location for plugshare and for weather.

Waze is difficult. They only support navigation on mobile, and the live map is not very useful. When Android support rolls out for the car, this will be a non-issue. Otherwise it will be up to Waze to do the same thing PlugShare did, create a Tesla specific site: tesla.plugshare.com.

I can put https://www.waze.com/livemap in the mix if it is actually useful to people. Unfortunately I don't think I can even inject the geolocation into their page.

agiangone | April 1, 2014

Well done Jared. Please keep improving it.

xrayangiodoc | April 1, 2014

Nice job. Easy to access frequently needed services. I smiled when I saw the Valet page! Any Valet who would approach my car is told, "In your (wet) dreams!"

JaredBanyard | April 2, 2014

Yeah I hear you. Well if anybody has any suggestions, please let me know! I just added the stock price to the page and translation to the valet page!

Thom EM | April 2, 2014

Awesomely cool! Thanks for your efforts!

JaredBanyard | April 2, 2014

Yup no problem. FYI the stock price updates every 10 seconds now.

hikerockies | April 2, 2014

@JaredBanyard: Good work and thanks for making the source code available. I didn't see a license on the code. Would you mind adding your copyright and some sort of license? GPL would be great but it is your choice.

JaredBanyard | April 2, 2014

@hikerockies Oops, good call. Done.

nick-r | April 2, 2014

Very nice work Jared. I love it! I was thinking of doing something very similar to this. The stock price in the upper right corner is a nice touch.

I haven't seen it in my car's browser yet, but one suggestion may be to convert the links at the top of the screen into large, easy to press buttons.

shop | April 2, 2014

Very nice work Jared. I was always planning on doing something like this, but you beat me to it. Well done.

ökostromer | April 2, 2014

a very nice page! for us in europe it would be interesting to have information about our weather radar. unfortunately the great plugshare page doesn't show any charging stations in europe. do you know lemnet.org? its similar to plugshare but specialized for european content. would be very cool if you could implement lemnet into your tesla page.

best regards from a swiss tesla enthisiast

ökostromer | April 2, 2014

enthusiast!! sorry...

JaredBanyard | April 2, 2014

Okay cool, yeah there aren't a whole lot of good worldwide api's/graphics for radar imagery. If you all know of any, let me know.

NKYTA | April 2, 2014

@Jared, nicely put together. I'll give it a try in NKYTA this afternoon.

Also noticed the license. +1

One other thing, you might want to ask ownership@ if you are allowed to use the Tesla logo without permission (forgive me if you already have permission). As this is under the GPL, it implies others could use it.

@Zap, I checked out the source, nothing to be concerned about security-wise.

JaredBanyard | April 2, 2014

@NKYTA I'm probably going to replace that logo with an analog clock anyway.

Bighorn | April 2, 2014

@Jared
How is the location determined for local weather because mine is 370 miles off.

ökostromer | April 2, 2014

a popular weather radar in switzerland is 'regenradar schweiz' from 20min.ch and meteonews.ch. this service is available as app for the most ios's as i know. another good charging station site is chargemap.com.

one more question: how is it possible to display the temperature in degrees celsius?

thanks very much

JaredBanyard | April 2, 2014

@Bighorn If you have 5.9 firmware, it uses HTML5 geolocation from the car's nav. If not, it uses IP Addresses and GeoIP lookups. The IP lookups can be crazy off.

Bighorn | April 2, 2014

@Jared
Thanks!
Not on 5.9 yet.

KidDoc | April 2, 2014

The weather always defaults to Florida, how do I make it default to curent location?

jawilcox | April 2, 2014

@Jared
Nicely done! You might want to add Google translation to Norwegian for the valet page given the large number of Teslas sold there.

J.T. | April 2, 2014

Jared I understand you might be switching out the tesla logo but I have to say it makes a pretty impressive screen when giving a ride. Then when you switch to nav it's like, "Oh, WOW!"

JaredBanyard | April 2, 2014

Hah glad you guys like it. I'm already hitting the API limit of 500 a day for the severe weather alerts from weather underground .. argh .. Either need to find a free one, figure out weather.gov's VTEC system, or come up with money to pay for the API costs.

JaredBanyard | April 2, 2014

Okay clock added with toggle to logo .. so everybody can chime in ;)

JaredBanyard | April 2, 2014

Oops it wasn't completely synced, okay should be good to go now.

Jay w | April 2, 2014

@Jared
Thanks for putting this together great job!!!

ökostromer | April 2, 2014

very nice watch. its the one you can see multiple times in swiss train stations. so its quite familiar for me. good design, fits well to the interior of the car.

kwoo4424 | April 2, 2014

If there is room, how about what price Tesla stock currently trading at on stock market. Their symbol is TSLA.

kwoo4424 | April 2, 2014

Oops , I shoulda looked first.

JaredBanyard | April 3, 2014

Haha .. yeah definitely already up there

JaredBanyard | April 3, 2014

@KidDoc I changed the GeoIP location service, see if that helps, otherwise get 5.9 firmware ;)

JaredBanyard | April 3, 2014

@NYKTA Yeah I'm hoping other people making some of their own sites with source so I can improve my site!

JaredBanyard | April 3, 2014

@ökostromer Temperatures are localized now! If in US, they are F/MPH, if in GB, they are C/MPH, everywhere else is C/KPH!

KidDoc | April 3, 2014

Is there a way to "get" 5.9? Aside from taking it to a service center I'm too busy with work haha.

Thanks for the portal though it is pretty nice.

J.T. | April 3, 2014

@KidDoc They stopped the rollout to exterminate. Once they've done that you'll get it.

JaredBanyard | April 3, 2014

Okay, If you are in the US or CA, http://tesla.plugshare.com shows up under "Charging", outside the US or CA, http://www.chargemap.com/m/ shows up.
