Can we make a vote here. Who will buy this car if it would come only with sliding doors and not with FALCON.
I think there should be an option of sliding doors, but only sliding, no, because the falcon doors are not only practical, but they also look sick!
I wouldn't buy or should I say my Wife doesn't want sliding doors. She doesn't want to be reminded of a minivan. Plus, I think it would make the X look worse and would probably be less aerodynamic and interfere with the design Tesla was going for.
I would not buy with sliding doors.
Sliding doors are for minivans. They would ruin the Model X. The falcon wing doors are a standout feature which is what people want when buying a stand out vehicle. Let's face it we buy cars to say look at me! I am awesome!

I've seen several video and read articles from Elon on this subject. Falcon doors are a 'signature' part of the Model X. I don't believe that will change. Tesla will come up with innovative and creative ways to address any "issues" people may have with the doors....ski racks, sensors, snow collecting, etc,
If you can't deal with the Falcon doors, Model X may not be the right SUV for you.

I already went through the Chrysler Town and Country minivan stage, thank you very much. Falcon Wing Doors are a must have for my order. If you don't like them there are plenty of minivans in market with sliding doors.
I think the Falcon Wing doors are cool and would probably work fine in most situations, but maybe regular swinging (not sliding) doors should be an option.
I understand that the OP may just want an electric minivan, but most of us wouldn't buy an ICE minivan, let alone and all electric one.
I think the Falcon Doors are pretty awesome, and give a lot more open space for people to get in/out of than a sliding door anyway.
The falcon doors are prtty fl;ashy and useless in a country that actually has winter. I agree that sliding doors are naf, but they are usful in tight spaces. I'd like suicide doors please!
How are they useless in winter? The back hatch is pretty much the same thing, is that useless in winter as well?
TM sez the f.w. doors open in the same space sliding doors do -- and are then out of the way. They don't swing out.
I expect there will be times a driver can't get in his own standard door, and uses the f.w.s!

I guess you have never heard of sweeping the snow off the vehicle? Do you even live in a Winter Wonderland?
ALL rules that apply for regular doors apply for Falcon wing doors.
If you open a regular door / sliding door and have not swept the snow away from the roof (at least on the side close to that door) guess where that snow will fall when you open the door?? hmmm.
Even when you sweep all the snow off and then you open a regular door, does a bit of snow fall inside (especially on a windy day) yes ... well same with the falcon doors.
On a rainy day when you open a regular door does a bit of rain get inside ... etc.

There will be water channels along the sides directing water away from the opening for rainy days.
There will be proximity sensors so that the door will never hit anything when its opening (in cases of low clearance garages etc.)
That goes for closing as well. It can't "pinch" any fingers when closing.
Has this ever happened to you?: You arrive at your destination and your boy is so anxious to get out of the car that he's out of his seat belt and excitedly pushes open the door, not realizing that you may have parked a bit too close for a 'full' door opening and dings the car next to you?? Well, that will never again happen with Falcon wing doors.
Another scenario: You come back to your car and find an idiot parked too close next to you and you are squeezing sideways just to get inside your door. Well now you can open your falcon door with less clearance than it takes to open your drivers door and get into the drivers seat with ease :-)
IMHO 'We don't know what we don't know' We don't know how great these falcon doors will be until we know :-) And then we'll wonder how we ever lived without them :-))
My biggest concern about the Falcon wings is how do I transport my 5 pair of alpine skis?
Kids, dog and luggage will require the skis to be placed on the outside of the car.

I love the Model X Falcon wings, it's one of it's unique features.
I would cancel my reservation for Model X if the Falcon wings were changed to sliding doors.
I agree with those above who wrote if people want a car with sliding doors (which is essentially a minivan), they should look at other options since Tesla is not for them.
If you want a sliding door, wait for the minivan version in a few years. I want the Falcon wing doors!

I would not buy this with sliding doors. I love the falcon wing door concept but rather have a conventional door over a sliding door.

Well if you had some monster truck tires with a lot of ground clearance, you could put the Thule storage box UNDER the vehicle.
Or we could own an SUV with no sports capacity (skis, kayaks, etc...).
But that would just be a Shopping Utility Vehicle. Maybe that's all they need to sell the Model X, but sometimes you want to at least strap a Christmas tree to the top.
I would buy it with sliding doors, or even traditional doors. I don't like falcon doors.
What I'm looking in a car is: a lot of space like in Caravan, a lot of towing capacity like in Tahoe (which I understand will be the biggest challenge for Tesla), and of course, the electrical drive.
Are there not ski racks that attach to a rear hatch? Didn't I see James Bond carrying his skis that way on his brown Lotus Esprit?

The falcon wings are why I made my reservation! I won't drive a swagger wagon with sliding doors, and I want all 4 of my kids to be able to get in and out of the car comfortably. This will be the first ever usable third row seat in a crossover.
Plus if I'm paying close to $100k for a vehicle, I want it to be unique and not blend it with all the other crossovers out there. The falcon wings are a marketers dream. Every time I open the doors in a parking lot, it will be like a huge billboard for the Tesla brand. People can't help but notice. A lot of people outside of California have still never heard of Tesla. The Model X and the falcon wing doors will change that.
Remember, too, that the f-w doors require no additional horizontal space to open, and leave that space clear for walking etc. when they've lifted. And contact avoidance sensors will stop them from bashing into overheads.
The MX will be a sensation.
I love the falcon wing doors. They remind me of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. My family and I will fly over the Golden Gate Bridge while all those earth-bound vehicles are stuck in traffic. Ha ha ha! And I don't even have a pilot's license...
Presumably no roof rack on this car due to the falcon doors. Wondering how I'll carry my surf boards. Maybe there will be a way to disable the falcon doors on one side of the car.

Other topic : something that really stroked me when I tested model S in Paris one month ago, was the total absence of storage in the car. The glove compartment is so small that even my credit card doesn't fit. No bottom door storage, no middle front seat storage, same in the back..It's quite surprising for a car which has no engines and aligning one of the biggest trunk capacity (front and back)!!!
Hope the design team will fix this
The big problem with the falcon wing doors is, how do I not look pretentiously cool when opening and closing them?
Seriously, I like the falcon wings and think there is more positive than negative regarding them.
A side note, these doors don't extend out much at all. DeLorean only extend out a very small amount. The problem with the X is that it is a much taller vehicle, and this will make a standard gull wing extend out further than it would on a short car like the DeLorean. This is addressed by the double hinge, possibly making it the most awesome gull wing door ever.
Your credit card doesn't fit in the glove box, come on, that is ridiculous.
I will buy the car either way because it will be the only vehicle that can transport my kids and their classmates in an environmentally responsible way.
Frankly, the gull wings are a bit ostentatious for me. I don't need a visual shout out to happen every time I'm offloading the kids. I have no ego issues over driving my van (mini vans haven't existed since the 90's in my opinion but I digress). I get the amount of seats I need and the sliding doors mean my kids never dink someone else's car and I can push a button to open and close them, it is great. I'll miss having the roof rack for the messier gear to be stowed outside with the gull wings. And I'm too short to have to reach up and scrape ice off of my roof hinges so I hope there's an electric warming option.
I have written to the big auto makers for years and been on the hybrid minivan forums. There isn't a single option for anything other than a fully gas vehicle in the U.S. Ford came tantalizingly close by brining the C-Max over from Europe and offering it in hybrid and hybrid-electric models. They chose, however, to only bring the small C-Max (seating for 5 a true minivan) and not the C-Max Grand which seats 7. I need a people mover and I'm tired of waiting.
So gull wings, no gull wings, I'm driving it because it is designed to hold the passengers I need and it is an all-electric, wonderful vehicle and when I plug it in to my 100% wind power credit charger at home I'm making a difference every day. That, ultimately, is what owning a Tesla comes down to for me
As much as I want the model X, I need to have a way to continue to transport my kayak. It goes on my Honda Pilot's roof without any problems. I would need an option for the falcon doors, and be able to put a rack on the roof. Looks like the model X is not really going to be a true SUV.
I could just wait for Toyota's Rav4-EV to get a bigger battery.
Okay, we practically don't know what Tesla is planning in terms of the Model X. I would wait until they actually deliver specs and such before getting panties in a bunch.
The falcon doors are a deal breaker for me as well. I've been using my Subaru wagons for years to haul bikes, skis, kayaks, lumber, pipe, and boxes on the roof. You name it and I've probably lashed it to my Yakima racks.
Falcon doors cool, but man they stick with the ugliest cone nose of any car in the market. Why they insist in this ugly nose? it makes not sense to me, the nose is the signature of any brand and this is the great failure of Tesla. Model X is nice I have the S and I would consider the X but the nose looks just like a cheap toy.

The usual: rescue crews cut open the car with hydraulic tools and rescue everyone inside.
We're in line for the model X but hope the design is changed from Falcon doors to sliders. We've been happy Toyota Sienna XLE AWD owners for years (just got a 2013 model and took a two year lease in anticipation of the X's availability). Sliding doors (especially Toyota's hidden track design) are practical, efficient and don't mess with the roof area. Plus, they're ideal for garages with pillars - like ours. Falcon doors look wicked cool - but Tesla should follow Apple's model of making sure beautiful things are married to practical things. One without the other could be impractical or boring (or both). Standing up in the model X - cool. Critically important? Nope.
Falcon doors is a signature feature of the Model X.
This is how you tell it apart from a gazillion of vehicles that look pretty much the same.

Falcon doors will be the signature look for the model X. From what I've read, they are functional and streamlined. My recommendation for those who don't like them.... Don't buy them! I've ordered the Sig X, I do hope he doesn't change the deign of the doors.
I think Elon wanted to step out of the traditional box- if he wanted to design a car that had sliding doors, he should have went to work with Toyota....just saying!!
I have posted this theory elsewhere. It is an opinion/theory.
I believe the TM engineers can come up with a door that could open either as a 'falcon' or 'slider'. Tailgates on some SUVs/crossovers/station wagons could open either down or with a side hinge.
My thought is that this could accommodate people who prefer one style versus another AND the people who want to have a roof rack for bikes, small boats and/or skis.
The opening preference could be set at the control panel or over ridden to slide open if weight is sensed on the roof or by the presence of a roof rack.
I can see some challenges with keeping structural integrity for a hybrid solution like that. It would be a shame if the doors were to fall of in a traffic accident.
True; falcon-doors are not optimal if you actually want to use the roof for something, but as a lot of people here have mentioned, putting stuff on the roof adds drag. Drag reduces range, reduced range damages TMs reputaion.
If the final version of TMX is offered with sliding doors, I don't think I want one. Falcon-doors are not very practical (I live in Norway), but for some reason, I really, really like them :)
You won't sell a lot of model X in Europe with Falcon doors.
Many underground parking lodges don't have the necessary height.
If a car is parked too close, you won't be able to open the door at all. Take a good look at the demo.
Just offer a normal or a sliding door as an option, or forget about the falcon doors at all.
After all, it's only the rear doors that have the falcon doors.
And what when the car is covered with snow?
Good luck opening, and more luck closing the doors.
They have to last for at least 8 years!
Put the effort and cost in a more attractive design.

I agree with jvp. Falcon doors are not practical for people who regularly receive rain, freezing rain, and snow. Some parking garages wouldn't allow the doors to open without damaging the paint and/or doors. I'm sure the falcon doors are cool if you're in someplace like southern CA.
I would like to see an option for regular doors. 3rd row seating isn't a must. I would gladly give up convenient access to 3rd row seats for functional doors. IMO
If you are parked so close the falcon wing won't open you also wouldn't be able to open the driver's door so you'll have to rethink your parking anyway.
A garage where the falcon wings can't open high enough that people can get in and out isn't a garage so much as it is a crawlspace. I suspect such parking isn't overly common even in Europe.
A car won't be covered in snow after having been driven since snow will basically just fly off while the car is in motion. A car that has been stationary should have its snow brushed off before it's driven anyway or you will be a road hazard. If the MX effectively forces the driver to brush off the snow before he gets going then this can only be a good thing.
Freezing rain that freezes up your falcon wing will also freeze up your driver's door. I suspect this is not very common but even when it does happen the MX will be the best car to own since if you've been thinking ahead the cabin heater will have been running for 30 minutes when you get out to the car and the ice will already be gone.
The falcon wing, when open, forms an umbrella over the interior and it has water channels to deal with the downpour, and so normal rain wouldn't be an issue. Windy conditions may drive rain into the interior but then this is also the case with regular doors.
I will not buy with sliding doors. Full stop.
I have an X on my shopping list for when we return to Colorado.
Regular doors or falcon wings are fine.
