Order/Delivery tracking for Tesla vehicles

Order/Delivery tracking for Tesla vehicles

Tesla should try to build an order tracking system like FedEx for their cars. That way customers can track the deliveries and know exactly where the car is. Something like
"Order placed->Build in process->Vehicle in transit->At delivery center->Delivered"

This would improve delivery efficiency, reduce delays and unexpected reschedules and keep the order/delivery process transparent.

They already have this, but it can get to any point in that timeline, go in reverse, go back to the beginning, jump almost to the end......yay!....oops, back to the start. Even if there was a tracker, you shouldn't trust it until you are actually looking at the car at delivery time with the actual VIN number you were assigned.

M3DNP | 29. syyskuu 2018

The idea is to make it available to us, so that we can track our orders. Order should be trackable with order/registration number and once it reaches delivery center, while being built and transported and can be tagged with VIN to our account.

For inventory vehicles, as soon as a vehicle with required config is available, it should be tagged to the order with the VIN.

I like your trouble-shooting and problem-solving attitude, but I don't think they really need our help with this one.

I'm venturing that the capability exists to uniquely assign a VIN to a customer very soon after it is generated. It is likely Tesla has the capability but has been overriding it.

Assigning a VIN to a customer too early upstream in the manufacturing hamstrings the manufacturer-- there is way too much accountability. It's far easier to reach your hand into a bag of finished cars and raffle them off in no particular order. They don't have to honor chronology of reservations or order placement. They get a lot more flexibility by assigning VINs late instead of early. They just deliver whatever they have.

It now seems unlikely that there was a vehicle available for each person notified to schedule an appointment. Notification of impeding delivery implied a 1 to 1 customer to VIN and Tesla misled many of us. The delivery appointment times scheduled were likely triple- or quadruple-booked because Tesla knew there was not going to be a delivery.

I imagine it looks like the trading floor of the NY Stock Exchange: just a bunch of frenzied delivery specialists yelling out, "I need a VIN, I need a VIN!"

I don't envy working at Tesla right now. It must be demoralizing.

I get that Tesla is doing this, but Elon Musk seems to think that by doing it this way he's going to prove that sustainable transport is financially viable. This model of delivering vehicles won't scale past Tesla fans like ourselves. We'll all still accept the vehicle when it eventually comes and deal with all the frustrations and be happy with the result, but the general public won't. This is not sustainable behavior for a car company.

HKH | 29. syyskuu 2018

@patrickscarrol +1 everything you said

This is a MOVE TOWARDS sustainable transport. Most of us are still dependent on the electricity grid.

Therefore, most Teslas still burn coal and non-renewable energy.

I'd venture that most people want a Tesla just because it is new technology and fast.

If responsible energy consumption were truly the primary directive, these cars would DEFAULT to Chill Mode and you would have to manually override each and every time you wanted to access the insane acceleration capabilities the car is equipped with.

To those who really care, put your cars in Chill mode.

Excuse me as I get off my soap box.

Yeah, I don’t care about the environmental impact (just a bonus for me I guess). I want/wanted a Tesla because it’s cool and is fast lol. I have had 3 cancelled delivery dates so far and now am waiting to be given a fourth. If I don’t get the car by December I’m out. Just can’t do this anymore. Wifey and I have been sharing 1 car for too long and to be this close to getting another one and then having it taken away just not good. Felt like a tease.

uzval_Tesla | 23. toukokuu 2019

I have tried tracking mine with no avail. There's a hack to do it.. if you know which company is shipping it

andy.connor.e | 23. toukokuu 2019

And i thought i got antsy about waiting for shipment deliveries.

Ken Bob | 23. toukokuu 2019

I definitely care about the environment and especially Climate Change. If you’re going to have any chance of convincing people to go green, you have to produce a product that appeals to a broad range. The very fact that people don’t care about the planet means that it you only offer an econobox, it won’t sell. Offer a fast car that happens to be efficient, and you’ve made a difference.

Back on topic, it would be great if Tesla stayed more in touch with customers during the buying process. I ordered my M3 AWD over a month ago and haven’t heard anything. Even a simple, “we haven’t forgotten about you” email would be appreciated.

Kenz | 23. toukokuu 2019

It would be nice if all your communication with Tesla could be tracked in one place.
All texts, phone calls, emails, purchases and repairs should be accessible online in one long thread.
There should be a history of all contact from a store visit to a service repair.
That way there would be one place for the customer or Tesla employee to go to review issues, complaints or just document all contact. Tesla is a great tech company. Dropping the ball on customer communication is puzzling.

wreinbrecht | 24. toukokuu 2019

Any idea how long it takes to deliver AWD long range M3 to the Kansas City delivery center these days? Definitely want the car before end of June.

Neomaxizoomdweebie | 24. toukokuu 2019

Hmmm, from the last couple of comments it almost sounds like production cannot currently keep up with demand. I wonder why the media can only report the exact opposite? Strange.

Jskonop | 29. toukokuu 2019

I ordered my Model 3 on Saturday, May 25th. The order form says plan on delivery within two weeks. Based on the last few posts I'm guessing I won't see it for at least a month or more. I live about 60 miles from the factory in Hawthorne, CA but I don't think that has any bearing on the vehicle being delivered any sooner.

David N | 29. toukokuu 2019

Keep in mind that actual production schedule now has to take into account production for Europe, and England.

nylon | 29. toukokuu 2019

@jskonop What configuration is your Model 3? My delivery estimate is 6-8 weeks for an SR with midnight silver, black interior and 18" wheels. Ordered on 5/15.

Jskonop | 03. kesäkuu 2019

@nylon I ordered a Model 3 Performance on 05/25/2019. Grey Metallic w/ Black interior. The only email I have received is an order confirmation with an RN#. No other specifics as far as build or delivery date yet.

Smalm | 03. kesäkuu 2019

@jskonop, I too ordered MSM/black, aero SR+ on 5/25 from Costa Mesa. Last night my account changed to make final payment. This morning received a text for Wednesday (6/5) delivery. Within 2 weeks was real for me. Had to ask sales rep for VIN.

Jskonop | 03. kesäkuu 2019

@Smalm, OK thanks, enjoy the new ride!...Ill keep checking on mine.

Jskonop | 04. kesäkuu 2019

Just got the text from Tesla this am. Ready for delivery 06/06/2019. 13 days from order date so their estimated 2 week delivery date was accurate.

bradwright1 | 08. kesäkuu 2019

When I ordered I expected the two weeks estimate to actually mean two weeks. I think it is important to no over promise and under deliver. If there is a delay because of extreme demand, supply chain issues, etc, I think the customers should get a new ETA. Anything less than that will erode trust between the company and the customers.

llim3306 | 08. kesäkuu 2019

I ordered my model 3 SR+, MSM, with aero wheels on 5/27/19. There was not available inventory at the time of my order. I actually expected 2-3+ weeks to take delivery. I was notified on 6/3 to expect deliver by 6/4. My car was a delivered by noon on 6/4. I lived in BA about 30 miles from Fremont plant.

mshughett | 19. kesäkuu 2019

Just ordered a white Model 3 on June 13th. It is scheduled to deliver on Monday the 24th of june. Super happy because I spend a lot of money in gas. Saving big money, driving an awesome car and helping to get away from the oil companies. I love everything about this.

fadi0107 | 19. kesäkuu 2019

I ordered a performance model 3, grey with white interior on 6/7/19, and am yet to get a VIN or a delivery date, forget actual delivery... This is getting close to the 6/30 tax credit deadline and it's making me worried. Anyone experiencing this? Seems people are getting their cars within couple of weeks looking at the latest post.

fadi0107 | 20. kesäkuu 2019

woohoo! got the VIN today and delivery scheduled for 6/29/19... Talk about cutting it close. So seems 2 weeks looked more like 3 weeks for me

jvmoore1 | 20. kesäkuu 2019

ordered LR RWD, MSM, white interior, and aero wheels on 6/4
still no VIN. I am in Alabama, so looking at 5-7 days to deliver at least and closest Hub is Atlanta.
Cutting it very close to the end of the month

Neomaxizoomdweebie | 20. kesäkuu 2019

Looks like Tesla is struggling to meet demand, not struggling to find buyers.
