Quick drop in range after 2016.16.2 update

I thought I had a battery problem and was about to schedule service when I saw this:

This is an extremely frustrating situation as I lost ~8% range overnight. Since I have a 2017 60D, this kind of loss is scary. I've already had to drive for hours in freezing weather with the heat off just to make it home on routes devoid of Superchargers. Route planning is already difficult, requiring me to add significant mileage to reach Superchargers along the way and sometimes I get home with ~11 miles in reserve.

Bottom line, the newer cars get increased mileage with software updates, but reverse for the older cars? I'm not happy.

I saw that, this is no bueno for those experiencing it.

I thought it was something that happened to 85s, not 60s. So maybe you are having a problem? Seems co-incidental.

I have actually seen a slight increase in the 80% charge range from 205 to 210 miles since 2019.16.2 was installed on our 2015 85D. No change on our 2015 P90D.

I saw the article ... so it's not just my car :).

I have the problem :( . Range is constantly going down. I don't remember the update version (sometime in Jan/Feb) but at some point it started to oscillate, one day 227 then 224. Now, it's down to 223 (I used to get constantly 227)! Another issue with charging at work vs home I don't get same values.

Mine is MS 75D 2016, 35k miles, charging 90% (last line?) twice/day (I drive ~60miles 1 way).

Batteries indicate their state of charge via voltages. The measure is calibrated in milli volts but but that doesn't indicate 99.9% ( one in a thousand accuracy) it is most likely around 99.5 % accurate. Next an algorithm converts the state of charge obtained from voltages to estimated miles. Updates to this algorithm will affect estimated miles but no physical change occurs to the batteries. Further the 0.5% error bracket can cause a one or two mile variance between readings.

After reading about the loss of range due to 2019.16.2, I charged to 100% today my 2014 P85DL. I have lost 20 miles from 238 to 218. I will be going to the dragstrip along with the LATesla Club to Irwindale next Thursday to see if I have lost any power. If so I will be extremely unhappy.

@heartbeat & @acegreat1 - Did you drain to under 20% SOC before charging to 100%? Did you check the range within an hour of reaching 100%? If not, your prior numbers are not accurate and likely you have not loss much real range. Average expected loss is 7.4% at 120K miles, but +/- 2 % from this is reasonable too (i.e. 5-9%).

On a good note... I just received the 2018.20.2.1 update a couple of days ago and it looks like I've regained most of the loss. I'm down 2% charging capacity after 2 years. Much better than the 8% after the previous update.

Mine is the car highlighted in the Electrek article.
My rated range as well as actual range has been seriously affected since mid May. I have data from the car showing degradation of about 13% with software updates 2019.16.1.1 & 2019.16.2.
I have had the car intobthe Service Center a couple of times now and tgeir tests report no problems with my battery and that the degradation is within 10% of fleet-wide nominal degradation.
However, i believe the rated range constant has been modified and now artificially inflates the displayed rated range.
I believe my battery is actually degraded by more than 12% and thus should trigger a warranty replacement.

Degradation can be roughly extrapolated by extractable kWhs. Unaffected by rate constants

Service Center will say the battery is fine and the software upgrade was to protect the battery. Besides I sold my Tesla today and will get my new Raven Wednesday.

I lost ~8kWh of capacity and about 30kW of performance with 2019 16.2 on a 2014 P85DL. I filed an arbitration claim.

I have MS2015 70D and I lost 30 miles after the update. Now my 90% SOC is 185 RM. The other problem is that I can't charge to 100% anymore. @97% the car says Charging complete. It took 45 min to go from 90% to 97%. I scheduled an appointment with the SC. I wrote them about it and they said that everything is OK. Very frustrating situation.

"Tesla assured Roadshow that this update wouldn't be noticed by most of its customers in operation and that in addition to improving safety in the long-term, it should also help improve the life of Tesla's already notoriously long-lived packs." From this Roadshow article:

So Tesla is betting many owners effected won't notice. That is not what I am seeing on this and other forums on this topic.

As an effected owner, Tesla has screwed us. Not to ignore the huge issue that Tesla is not communicating with us. That means they are not stepping up and talking about the issues at hand. Looks like a cover-up when they aren't talking. Especially when they tell Roadshow that most owners won't notice. Leaves for speculation, which as a screwed owner, does not set well.

my experience: i have a sep 2014 build P85 with ap1, currently with 47,217 miles. upon reading another post about battery degradation i decided to test mine. on 4-18-19 i supercharged for approx 110 minutes from 17% soc to 100% soc and was very pleased to get to 259 miles of range, (orig rated at 265 miles when new). i almost always super charge to 90% and have only charged to 100% once or twice previously. when new, a 90% charge was 240 miles and then it slowly dropped to 239, 238, 237...234 etc.

upon seeing this post on 7-1-19 i again supercharged for approx 123 minutes from 9% soc to 100% soc and reached only 237 miles of range, approx 9% less (22 miles) than the 100% charge about three months ago.

on 7-10-19 my next, most recent, supercharge for approx 50 minutes from 14% soc to 90% soc indicated 210 miles of range. i am currently on v9.0 (2019.16.3.2a19d0e4) and i believe that version was received after the 259 range miles soc on 4-18-19. i have received notice of another available update for about the last two weeks but have not yet accepted it.

My P85+ is crippled too.
Range at 100% SoC: 325 km
SuC power reduced to 65 kW.
124.000 km on 2013 P85+ car.
