Porsche engineers rent a model 3..

Interesting article.. I guess Porsche is trying to learn from Tesla. Not surprising really as the rest are so far behind and are now trying to play catch up..

https://ww.electrek.co/2019/12/03/porsche-rents-tesla-model-3-test-autop...

From the article:

Porsche is really interested in Tesla’s latest V10 software update, and especially the new Smart Summon feature. Electrek has learned that Porsche sent engineers to the US to rent a Tesla Model 3 and test out Autopilot under the latest software update.

They apparently came out impressed.

surprised they didn't just buy one. I assumed everyone buys each others stuff and tries to reverse engineer anything they do better.

That was my thought as well.. Why not just buy one and keep it for further and / or more intense testing...

I bet the CEO would not like hearing that one of their employees bought the competition

I think the point went over your head Andy (a few times today). It is about Research and Development and most every industry they own the competitors product. You have to know your competitors offerings at all times and how you stack up.

Then there was Mercedes that rented a Model X, put it through severe tests, disassembled it, reassembled it and turned it back into the rental company without a word: https://qz.com/1146259/mercedes-got-caught-trashing-a-rental-tesla-model-x/

There are companies in the auto industry that specialize in doing teardowns for competitive intel

@TT

Pretty ballsy to do teardown on a rental. Imagine if they weren't able to reassemble it fully and brought it back in parts/boxes on flatbed. Wow.

"The best or nothing" :)

Is advanced summon not available in Germany?
