Apple Watch as a key like an iPhone

Apple Watch as a key like an iPhone

Has anyone been able to pair a series 5 Apple Watch like an iPhone for easy access? I don’t mean the apps that send commands.

btjones34711 | December 15, 2019

Nope, not yet. But I think the hardware exists to allow the feature you describe. Tesla, would need to update the iOS app. Great idea! Tesla, are you listening?

+1 I would like the Apple Watch to be able to have some of the basic functions as the iPhone. When I drive out to a park or a lake for a run, it would be great to not have to take my phone or keycard with me.

+1 Add.The.Watch!

dan | December 16, 2019

It would be fantastic if they added an Apple Watch complication to use instead of the phone. They have already shown a willingness to ditch a traditional key. The next logical step would be to get rid of the need to carry around your phone.

Since getting an Apple Watch a year ago, I've come to the point where I frequently leave home without my phone. I'm no Apple fanboi but I can appreciate the simplicity of being able to drive my car to the store and buy something without having to carry a phone, wallet, and keys.

WEST TEX EV | December 16, 2019

Off brand:

You are right not useable as key. Plus I am pretty sure requires phone app.

Not great solution.

+1 TESLA please add watch!!! And watch App!

Kary993 | December 16, 2019

I think this would be a very cool feature for all the reasons mentioned above!

jebinc | December 16, 2019

Here’s to hoping it happens...

kevin | December 17, 2019

+1 I would use this all the time for quick errands. I usually have my phone with me, but it would be great in case I didn't have it on hand.

Effopec | December 17, 2019

I would love it for the times I go out to get something out of my car but my phone is inside on on the table.

jimmy_macd | December 17, 2019

@NorthValley "it would be great to not have to take my phone or keycard with me."

Just remember that if you leave your phone in the car it may stay unlocked.

howard | December 17, 2019

Be easier to hold my watch against the door pillar than getting my phone out and holding up.

aj | December 17, 2019

+1 for Apple Watch as key!

EVRider | December 17, 2019

I would like to see Apple Watch support too, but until we get it, is it really that big a deal to keep your keycard with you?

casun | December 18, 2019

we need this.

NorthValley | December 18, 2019

@EVRider....its no big deal at all, it would just be nice not to have to carry it!

NorthValley | December 18, 2019

@jimmy_macd...I meant that it would be nice not to have to carry the phone or keycard while running, which at the moment I do.

ronbandel | December 18, 2019

+1 Please add the watch

eztider | December 18, 2019

+1 on the watch please

Kary993 | December 18, 2019

Well the watch idea I suggested has really nothing to do with the key card. I would still need the key card for valet for example. As mentioned above there are many advantages to having a watch open the car from being locked out in your own garage because the phone is in the house to just running to the store and paying with apple pay and never bringing a phone or wallet. I think it is yet another differentiator for Tesla to offer this.

NorthValley | December 18, 2019

BMW have offered an Apple Watch App to lock/unlock, change climate controls and see available range for their vehicles for a few years now

WEST TEX EV | December 18, 2019

Apple Watch as BT Key.
Apple Watch App!

Kary993 | December 18, 2019

@NorthValley - the only problem with that statement is their car sucks and we through third party have apps on phones and watches as what's the point?

EVRider | December 18, 2019

Even if (and hopefully when) Tesla provides Apple Watch support, you're still taking your chances if you don't have your key card, because sometimes the phone key doesn't work and presumably the same would be true of the Watch. I always have a key card as backup for my phone key, and although I haven't needed to use it yet, the first time I forget it will be the first time I need it. :-)

Kary993 | December 18, 2019

Never had an issue trying to get into my car with iPhone and not being able to get in at all.

david | May 14, 2020

You can actually do this now with Nikola! Just added Apple Watch Tesla unlocking.

I'm the solo developer of the app if you have any questions.

lbowroom | May 14, 2020

having to press a button on your watch to unlock is not the same as Bluetooth proximity unlock. I assume that's what your app does?

Kary993 | May 14, 2020

I really don't don't like people advertising for their own gain here, particularly when what this person is peddling is not the same function, me the OP was asking for, from the watch like the phone does.

Wondered why suddenly every thread about apple watches appeared at the top of the forum........

Wondered why suddenly every thread about apple watches appeared at the top of the forum........

Yes, because he posted his ad for his app on every Apple Watch thread. Just flag all of them since he is spamming the board.

david | May 14, 2020

sorry folks. didn't mean to be spammy. Was just enthused.

lbowroom | May 15, 2020

You do understand what people are asking for is different than what you offer, right? Why not take the opportunity to explain the challenge, or impossibility of using Apple Watch as Bluetooth key.

Chaverim | June 10, 2020

Elon, please add Apple Watch and google watch apps and keys. We shouldn’t be behind the big old school auto makers.

lbowroom | June 10, 2020

which old school automakers allow you to drive your car with just a watch?

ksandler60 | June 10, 2020

FWIW, I'm using STATS and controlling my M3 from my Applewatch. Love it!

JJM | June 10, 2020

Using Apple shortcuts with Automate. Can say “Hey Siri”

-Open Frunk
-Open Trunk
-Unlock and what ever you name your car

Has worked well especially with your hands full of groceries. Beats dropping everything to dig for your phone

lbowroom | June 10, 2020

“ Beats dropping everything to dig for your phone”

As long as phone isn’t in your back pocket or purse, there should be no need to pull it out

EVRider | June 11, 2020

You won’t be able to use your Apple Watch as an actual key until Tesla creates a watchOS app.

SWFlaMod3 | June 11, 2020

I see there are aftermarket dealers that remove the chip from the key card and insert it into rings, necklaces, etc. I wonder if the chip can be removed from the card and secured to the watch band? Will the watch or ring then have to be near the center console to drive? Why would there be a need for this? I have my phone in my pocket all the time. I just walk up to the car open the door, get in and drive.

EVRider | June 12, 2020

@SWFlaMod3: One reason people have asked for this is because they run without their phone, and for whatever reason don’t want to bring a key card. There may be other more compelling use cases, but so far Tesla hasn’t shown any interest in creating a watchOS app.

paul | June 12, 2020

Apple is implementing something called Car Key into their new OS which will allow NFC use with Apple Watch and cars....BMW is mentioned as having signed on, really hoping Tesla will as well....the watch has NFC, people use it to pay for their groceries but have to pull out a key card to open the car?
I have tried a few apps but unless both watch and car have cell coverage they don’t work....worst thing is that wifi does not help either....
Really hoping Tesla will come out with something soon....the tech has been in iOS 13.4 iOS 14 should be announced in a few weeks, available soon....hope that will solve this issue...

paul | June 12, 2020

Just want to add that i really want to be able to leave my phone at home....the watch can call, text, email, if i want to actually do stuff i can bring my ipad, the phone is just extra screen time i can do without....

jgutweiler | June 14, 2020

Tesla, are u listening to the requests from car owners to have a Tesla App for Apple watch? Why has this not happened? I would think the majority of Tesla owners have Apple watches. Please provide all of us in this forum why this has not happened. Why should Tesla car owners have to pay for a 3rd party App like STATS to have this functionality? Thank you.

lbowroom | June 14, 2020

Really? We’re entitled to it? lol

EVRider | June 15, 2020

Tesla doesn’t respond to questions here, and third party apps can’t provide Bluetooth phone key functionality for Apple Watch.

paul | June 15, 2020

Bluetooth integration with Apple Watch has to be enabled by apple which right now wont happen....
The Tesla provided keycard has a NFC chip which can communicate with every Apple Watch (Just like Apple Pay)....again: this has to be opened up by apple to allow communication with cars, which is where their soon to be announced CarKey is coming in....i am just really hoping that Tesla will be one of the first ones to support it....
It would not be quite as elegant as Bluetooth but probably more reliable and bulletproof.

+1 Add. Apple Watch

x_ming_liu | July 3, 2020

+1 Add Apple Watch. I used to have a VW and go running with my key in a little pocket in my CW-X thigh, plus Apple Watch with Cellular. I just realized that I cannot no longer do that. I have to carry either the phone or a key card, none of them fit in my little pocket in my CW-X. Desperately needing a watch app right now.
