Factory Reset

How do I reset my model 3 to remove all my personal settings I.e. how it was when I arrived for delivery?

I see how to “reboot” and mentions of Factory Resets, but can’t find the exact steps to get there in the car.

I need to remove:
Cell phone keys
Radio favorites
Cell phone connection for calls/music
Garage doors

Anything else? I assume these are all included.

I'm assuming you are doing this in anticipation of selling the car? You may also want to clear nav history and any home/work addresses you have saved.

I could have sworn there was a way to do all this automatically, but can't find it for M3, only S.

I don't see an option to do a factory reset like the S and the X.

I called Tesla support and they also stated this does not exist for 3, only X and S. Odd; hope I got it all.

That's really odd, but I couldn't find a reset option in the manual. Can't imagine why they wouldn't provide this for the Model 3; it will likely show up in a future update.

I guess Tesla figures once you have your Model 3, you'll never give it up. :-)

I noticed this right before handing my 3 off to my wife’s cousin. Clearing all the nav destinations was a pain. A couple wouldn’t disappear. Luckily, they weren’t exciting ones.

Djharrington, how do you clear your nav destinations? Couldn't find anything in the owners manual.

Hold down on the history destination on the screen. An X will appear on the right (replacing the pin icon). Agreed, that was the biggest pain; I left businesses I visited on there, but removed friends/family (and the home/work shortcuts of course).

Thanks Instant Acceleration. Still on the learning curve. Went on a road trip (3,000+ miles) a week after I took delivery. No major problems. I did notice a small amount of water in the truck after a heavy rain. I'll investigate.

Did you create an account on Tesla with your e-mail and password yet?

I forgot which Tesla e-mail to send to but in the mean time, you can call or go to generic contact page to send your VIN & info and request phone app access.

Controls > Settings > Service & Reset > Factory Reset > Erase & Reset

There is a factory reset M3 under service.
I have not tried i,t not sure what it will do.

I have used the reset on a Model S I sold. No big deal, but it does reinstall the software so it takes a good 45 minutes before the car really works again. I assume it re-installed the software, i guess I should just say whatever it does takes a significant amount of time where I was worried something went wrong, but eventually everything reset and worked as expected.

Yep, as vst3 says, just use the factory reset feature on the Service settings page. It's in the owner's manual.

Excerpt from OM:
Erasing Personal Data
You can erase all personal data (saved addresses, music favorites, HomeLink programming, etc.)
and restore all customized settings to their factory defaults. This is useful when transferring
ownership of Model 3. Touch Controls > Service > FACTORY RESET. Before erasing, Model 3
verifies your credentials by prompting you to enter the user name and password associated with
your Tesla Account.

It says "etc". Does it re-install firmware? How long does it take. Any issues reported?

Factory Reset only erases personal data and settings. It doesn’t change the firmware.

I tried running the factory reset twice with no success. It behaves just like a hard reset. The screen turns off for about 25 seconds then the t symbol appears and the screen comes back up. No settings have changed no personal data is removed.

M3 SR+ Manufacture date March 2019 HW2.5 firmware 2019.12.1.2.

I have a service appointment next week.

I heard others report the factory reset reinstalls the firmware and takes about 45 mins. I wanted to see if this would fix a few Issues I'm having.

-Driver profile not saving.
-Side mirror not returning to proper position after folding
-Re-enable AP trial that cancelled early
-Black reverse camera
-Difficult to remove charger from charge port

I realize some of these my be hardware related and AP is a known issue, but just wanted to start fresh to see if it resolved any issues.

@ShaunyD: The others who reported that Factory Reset reinstalls the firmware are wrong. All it does (when it works correctly) is erase personal data and settings, useful if you’re parting with the car.

I should add that a few people have reported that they unexpectedly lost their personal settings during a regular firmware update (not a reset). Irony, anyone?

Update: factory reset still failed after removing usb thumb drive. I tried several times. Hopefully the SC can fix some of the issues next week and I won't have to reset.

Call customer service and they should be able to push firmware. I had an update hang incomplete and they resent it and it installed correctly. Good luck.

@calpilot7: Customer Service can’t help with updates, but Service can. You can schedule service using the mobile app and select the software update option.
