Garage

Garage

Set up my relatively new Model 3 to open my garage when I approached and close when i drive away. It still works for opening the garage, but i need to press the Garage button to close it. Not sure how to fix this. Any ideas?

I have found that the location of your vehicle, which should be just outside of your garage, is important when programming HomeLink. Also, I have found that exiting the garage, once cleared from the door, at constant speed tends to help HomeLink detect that you're leaving, and thereby activating to close the garage door. We have two Model 3s in our garage, and it took a couple of programmings until we got both to behave reliably.

Mine occasionally fails to close the garage door upon departure. There's no "bong" sound, and the screen doesn't show it's trying, so it seems the car is never issuing the command, as opposed to the alternative that it is, but the signal isn't being received.

I haven't quite pinned this down yet, but I think it's correlated with slight variations in departure behavior on my part. Like if I put it in reverse, and then pause to do navigation or because I forgot something. Whatever it is, I think I'm doing something that puts it outside of its necessary initial conditions for issuing the command.

Do you by chance back into your garage? I found that I need to be facing the garage when the signal is launched. If you are not hearing the tone then this isn’t the problem.

I had the same problem, and it turned out to be caused by the light bulbs in my garage door opener.

CFL or LED bulbs produce some radio frequency interference and can prevent the opener from receiving a clean signal from the car. When you leave, the light is on and so it's hard to close the door. When you return, the light is usually off and so the signal gets through.

The solution for me was to buy special "garage door compatible" LED bulbs from Amazon.

Just try unscrewing the bulb(s) from your opener and see if that helps. If so, new bulbs should do the trick.

I seem to recall having to set my distance to the maximum to get it to close on departure. I suspect Daryl's tip will do the trick, but failing that try upping the distance.

In my case, it works on the gates to the development, but doesn't work on the garage door. I finally just gave up and use the clicker that came with the opener. Life goes on. I love the car......I can use the clicker.

When I return home the garage door has opened automatically properly since I got the vehicle in July. On some firmware releases it failed when departing however. Now on 50.6 it seems far better having missed only once. Be sure that when you program the vehicle you use a remote with a fresh battery. Sounds unnecessary especially if the remote works properly, but both Tesla and HomeLink suggest any programming be done with a fresh battery. I think it makes a difference.

I had the same issue and just like @Daryl I changed the light bulbs to a low interference type. Works every time now.

I would disable this feature to prevent accidental closures on the car.

Great suggestions. Thanks to all. Will try the bulb change.

+1 lilbean, yes not worth risking it closing on the car.

Though, I must say, I am really excited about the upcoming auto-folding mirrors being attached to home link.

btw. I had to fiddle with my auto open distance to get it to consistently open for me. The default was to far out and if I came up the driveway to slowly it would send the open before it was in range.
