Gift card from Tesla

In the mail today I got an envelope from Tesla containing a $100 gift card to 7forallmankind. The gift card just says$100 luxe performance gift card, exclusively for owners of Tesla.
Am I somehow special or do we all get one?

Got a answer back from Ownership. It is a valid promotion.
Not everyone got the word apparently.

Checked out the website. VERY expensive jeans and you need to spend $250 to be
able to use the card.

I live in Orange County,Ca and got the card on Thursday 8/29. Seemed odd to me as there was no letter or any other promotional information. What is the deal? Was this a Tesla promotion? If so, thanks, but I can think of a lot better promotional items (such as a key fob case, a key fob ring assembly, a nice pen (( which BMW sent after I bought my 7 series)), etc). I don't want to sound ungrateful but my 64 year old body is not meant for 7 for all mankind jeans!!

Got mine today. While I like the jeans, not REAL happy about the disclosure of owners names...
Doesn't feel like a "Tesla" kind of thing in their normal marketing.

The recent gift card you received is part of a promotion with 7 For All Mankind. 7 For All Mankind is launching a premium denim line for men called 'Luxe Performance.' Tesla Motors has partnered with 7 For All Mankind and owners (in select areas) have received a gift card for a purchase at 7 For All Mankind stores. There is no obligation to buy or use the gift card as it is simply a gift.

Tesla managed the mailing of the envelopes with a third party so no customer information was added to any external mailing list. An Non-disclosure Agreement was signed by the outside company that mailed the envelopes to ensure this information was a one time use.

Just got one too.

I like the jeans too, but the V12 comment is a slap in the face for a Model S owner. They've pretty much lost a customer in me.

Tesla better get to the bottom of this. If they in any way endorsed this, they also share part of the blame. Otherwise, they better make sure this never happens again.

Yup, me too.

Either way, Luxe Performance Jeans would have to be better than my Buffalo Gobe Jeans (which are by far the most confortable jeans on Earth), in order for me to want to spend the extra $$$ on a pair.

On the flip side, I wish Tesla would allow Tag Heuer to design a 'Model S' logo wrist watch. Now that I would BUY!!!!

For the cyber sleuths out there, you can decode the USPS barcode on the front of the letter using this tool:

Here is what mine decoded to (with ZIP code redacted):
Barcode ID: 94
Special Services: 009
Mailer ID: 207622
Serial Number: 413605487
Delivery Point ZIP Code: XXXXXXXXXXX

The "94" is for "online & meter mailers" (

No luck tracking down what company / bulk mailer is "207622". From there, they can track the serial number back to the sender. I think Tesla's lawyers should be sharpening their pencils / pens / word processors.

According to this website, by law mailers must track all serial numbers for 45 days. I suppose Tesla's lawyers have a chance to compel the mailer to identify who is misusing their trademark.

Why do some companies need a 6 digit Mailer's ID?
6 digit MID codes allow them more room for larger/longer serial numbers in the Intelligent Mail Barcode. Mailers must keep the combination of Mailer ID and piece serial number unique for 45 days. If you have a 6 digit Mailers ID you have 9 digit serial numbers in the mail piece. The difference is 999,999 unique piece per 45 days vs. 999,999,999 pieces every 45 days.

I receievd mine yesterday (SF Bay Area) and actually scanned my envelope and gift card and e-mailed the file to George B with an inquiry as to whether this was appropriate 3rd party marketing and if Sales was involved. I especially highlighted the fact that the comment about a V12 engine was really off-message. I wonder who in the organization actually gave final approval to the piece. We'll see what he says.

we can question why Tesla agreed on co-marketing with this particular company, and for very expensive jeans, but it is a known and common marketing technique for companies to send out promotions on another company's behalf, NOT disclosing any customer information. So, don't get all bent out of shape, your name is not sold to anyone by Tesla, whether you liked the jeans or promotion or not.

For example, I am a small business, and I would love to send something to the clients of my dentist, so I talk to my dentist, and ask if they would send out something for me about this promotion, I would pay the costs, the mail will be stuffed/addressed by them, I would Never see any names (unless the client took up the promotion), this is all normal practice. Privacy is not violated. Of course my dentist would only do it if we have a good relationship, and he feels like supporting my cause and using his staff for me, which he does not, unfortunately, so it never happened.

While it might be common practice for many companies, I think most of us felt betrayed by Tesla. We just did not think they would have to use those stupid marketing techniques to increase their revenue - because in the end that's all it is - an additional revenue source.

Shame on you, Tesla.

Apparently, TM did endeavor to protect customer privacy by not releasing the mailing list, but this is dicey stuff.

Their brand is so special, and their customer relationship so close that almost any association brings more risk than reward.

People also have a natural suspicion nowadays that there must be much more to the iceberg than what we can see. And that skepticism is warranted.

My advice to TM is to have an "opt in" policy. Unless a customer expressly confirms that they want to receive partner promotions, the only communication we get should be directly from Tesla.

When you have something made out of gold, you don't decorate it with tin.

To any Tesla reps reading this board, here are my two cents:

1) It is NOT OK to monetize us, your customer base, outside the products and services associated with the vehicles we chose to buy from you. Certainly not without our permission.

2) Giving access to your brand to other companies, especially ones whose products have nothing at all to do with your core business, is STUPID. It waters down your brand's value, and the Tesla brand is currently one of the hottest things around. Do not abuse it.

3) The whole "12 cylinders" line is incredibly poorly thought out given the target audience. This illustrates the risk you take when you sell out your brand.

4) Do not do this again. Have a LONG TALK with the guy or gal who thought this was a good idea and recalibrate their perceptions. I suspect Mr. Musk would agree that this is not in keeping with the Tesla Motors approach to customer relationships that he envisions.

I received the gift card yesterday.

The last pair of jeans I bought were from Target on clearance for $5. Out of curiosity, I went to 7 For All Mankind website to check out the apparel. There are some really snazzy looking skinny pants for $198 and a beautiful leather jacket for $995. I think Tesla is sending a subtle hint that I should update my wardrobe to match the sexiness of the MS.

cfOH,MarkK,temujen2000,tomas.hutters, these were among my reactions. The v12 comparison was too odd, and I felt the brand risked being diminished. I told them we didn't want unrelated promo and felt this was validating critics claiming TM only for clueless rich people with more $ than sense and MS just the latest haute coutre du jour. Initial response from ownership team to me yesterday was that they were unaware of any such promo and were seriously looking into it. Obviously not everybody got the memo or they never corrected initial response to me. I guess mystery solved. Starting to get over my initial guilty feeling of complaining about getting a "gift" but we can figure out where to spend $ on our own, thanks. Guess they don't know I already spent the $ on the car to support the company vision/progress. Well, I just hope TM is MAKING good $ vs spending $ on this promo. Otherwise I feel they should be spending resources elsewhere. Funny, when it first arrived my husband thought it was something for inconvenience of recent service experience. BTW, I wouldn't rely on anybody reading posts to know you feel, I'd send message directly to them if it's really important to you. Just my 2c of course. I still feel TM is incredibly important company. I am usually not in step with "mainstream" culture so what do I know anyway.

Tesla should expand the owner profile to explicitly authorize Tesla to send owners promotions from outside parties.

Tesla should reconsider allowing outside parties to use their branding and customer list - unless the relationship provides significant benefit to their customers - such as the relationship with Solar City.

In the case of this promotion - don't see the benefit to Tesla owners, since the promotion only worked for regularly priced items, and doesn't help for sales-priced items - and the products have no relationship to owning a Model S.

Tesla sells clothing through their online store. This would have been more appropriate if Tesla had established a relationship with this company for a new collection of Tesla-branded merchandise - and owners were getting a $100 discount on purchasing the newly branded items.

But without any relationship to Tesla branding or Model S ownership, Tesla should either avoid doing this again, or at least provide an "opt in" setting in our owner profiles.

Wow, I can't believe folks are in a twist over this. We solved the "issue" by placing said mailing in the circular file. And, we had a good chuckle over the "12 cylinder" faux pas.

That said, Telsa's branding and marketing is as confounding as possible. It's as if they don't know who their customers are. 7 for Mankind are Lambo owner pants. Folks may be moving from Porsche in droves, but I doubt they're moving many cheeseballs out of Lambos.

In my opinion the biggest fail here isn't the privacy issue but the misapplication of the Tesla logo and brand promise. Tesla willingly allowed a clothing company to use Tesla's logo and brand identity to sell jeans. I ran a boutique marketing and branding firm in Seattle for four years. I worked with companies like Microsoft, Boeing, and various high tech interests. Doing something like this is generally a big no no for any company that cares about its brand image.

Forgive the language, but Tesla just whored out its brand to help a clothing company with a promotion. I'm probably going out on a limb here, but I'm wondering if this is just a silly oversight on Tesla's part by an inexperienced marketing person, or whether the owner of this clothing company is good buddies or a family member of someone high up at Tesla. I'm totally speculating, but it seems difficult that a senior VP level person approved this lame promotion.

Hey Tesla, if you want to send me a gift card go right ahead. Send me a gift card for Tesla stuff as a customer appreciation gift.

I do own a few pairs of 7 jeans. These are good quality dress jeans. I like the fit of their jeans but I never pay $300 for them. I usually buy them at outlet stores like Norstrom Rack or Neiman Marcus Last Call for about $100 when they are on sale. You likely will end up pay more if you use the gift card and buy at full price.

Only downside is they are now made in Mexico not US as some said they are.

As for the gift card just throw it away it's no big deal. How many junk mials or spams we receive everyday day? Not something we like but we are all capable enough to handle these life's minor annoyment.

Folks, please settle down. Our info wasn't sold, and it is entirely possible they didn't get paid for this and really thought they were doing folks a favor. Like most of the people responding here, I would rather have a gift card to Gap, Lucky Brand, etc. as I find spending more than $50 on jeans a bit nuts, but if you don't like the promotion, just throw it out. It isn't like they force you to keep it on your desk, glaring at you! Of course, what I meant was to recycle it...
