Gray Anyone?

Gray Anyone?

Got my Time to Build your Model S email today. First choice for color is Sunset Red, which looks horrible in all the pictures I've seen, but looked a lot different when we saw one live during the Get Amped tour. Unfortunately, I'm told they won't switch out the Signature Red paint nozzle (or whatever) to Sunset Red until ALL of the Sigs have been produced world-wide, and am not willing to wait that long. Next choice is the grey, but I've never seen one live. Given the dramatic difference in the red live, I'm worried that I could run the opposite problem with the grey, i.e., looks great in pictures, but in real life, not so much. Next problem is I'm told the nearest Tesla locations that have a grey car are California or Washington. Questions for the group: Has anyone gotten, or is anyone soon to get a grey car that is closer to Florida than California? As I typed I realized grey is not available for sigs, so I guess not. So next question, any have impressions of grey in real life vs grey in the design center? Thanks in advance.

@bobinfla: If you are Facebook fluent, go to!/teslamotors/photos. TM posted pictures of the car in all ten colors. The pictures were taken at the same place, same time, and same camera position. In other words it gives you a good apples-to-apples comparison of the colors. Next best thing to comparing the colors in person.

I will be getting a Gray in the Ft. Lauderdale area, but I don't know if it's soon enough for you. Window is 11/2-11/16.

What DanielR refers to is on this website under gallerys.

@lajollan: thanks for the much easier link to the photos!

@bobinfla: I was choosing between silver and grey. I was able to see both in the bay area last week. For what it's worth, I think the grey is beautiful, and I finalized my order today!

nickjhowe | October 3, 2012

@bobinfla - saw the grey with dark wheels at the GetAmped event. Looked awesome. Nearly changed my mind away from Pearl White.

I too was considering the gray based on photos, but was concerned about how it might differ in the flesh. My fears were laid to rest after seeing it in person - got to test drive a dolphin grey performance model (silver wheels) in Washington a couple weeks ago. I think it looked great, and provides some nice tasteful contrast with the lighter, silver trim around the windows and on the side mirrors.

bobinfla | October 4, 2012

Thanks for the inputs. We've decided to go with the grey performance model and am finalizing today. Now the next round of waiting, sigh..............

vouteb | October 4, 2012

Good luck, I might do the same (UK) or the Sig red (performance)

I was sold on Grey with Black interior until I saw (2 different) Blue models with Tan interior. That is now my 1st choice. The Grey is actually quite nice, but the Blue is nothing like the web site photos and is quite spectacular.

ModelS3P | October 4, 2012

bobinfla: you won't be disappointed. I test drove the gray performance, and it looks really sharp in person.

murraypetera | October 4, 2012

We were split between Dark Grey and Dark Blue..
We ordered blue.. Drove the blue regrets.

olanmills | October 4, 2012

I'm getting gray, but I'm not super excited about it, to be honest.

Theresa | October 5, 2012

Well gray is better than bald!

s_curve | October 5, 2012

I think the Grey is sick (that's a compliment). My first choice was that with the Grey performance wheels until I visited a Tesla dealership and saw how very different those two shades of Grey were.

noel.smyth | October 5, 2012

Just ordered grey with black interior. Been checking out other manufacturers grey and the tesla pics online and it does look great. Wanted a lighter interior but think black best with grey. Anyone getting see grey interior on grey?

Ceilidh | October 5, 2012

I'm due to get mine in grey in November. P912, We'll see if that date holds.

I have also seen the car in grey in person and it looks great IMHO.

I am getting the grey leather to go with it and 19" wheels so no color mismatch issues on that end.

Whatever you choose the car looks great. I've seen 3 or so on the road and have been nothing but impressed.

I'm annoyed, on the SIG waiting list for ages, and now I like the grey....

mknox | October 10, 2012

My fav is Sig Red but alas, won't be getting a Sig. Based on the Tesla web site and other pictures I'd seen, I was settled on Grey with Black interior. I've since seen two Blue/Tan cars in person and am solidly sold on the Blue.

mknox | October 10, 2012

Crap! It looks like I answered this post twice!! Can you tell I really like the blue???

Brian H | October 10, 2012

So, how 'bout that blue? Could you go for that? You sorta sound like a Sunset Red or Hershey Brown kinda guy to me. ;)

bobinfla | October 10, 2012

Well thanks for the unanimous consensus that gray is the only way to go and all the other colors are only pale imitations. Now that my choice is carved in e-signed stone I can't wait to see it everyday for the next 10 years or so.

TeslaLABlue | October 25, 2012

Grey with Black leather interior is my order.

Just trying to decide if I'll change 19" wheels to 21" fanblade...can't decide.

Brian H | October 25, 2012

Just keep in mind, the right side draws in, the left fans out -- so the turbine fanblades suck and blow at the same time!

TeslaLABlue | October 28, 2012

Either way I like the 19's

Both 21 and 19 look great

kyleket | December 6, 2012

Hey all,

Anyone have thoughts on the gray leather? It's my leading choice right now, but am concerned about dirt showing. I'm afraid the tan would show dirt & wear a bit more, and certainly more than black would, which would hide it wonderfully. Just prefer the look of the gray leather with my RED S.

#7643 - Expecting in April

I have blue with performance grey interior, matte obeche trim. Some second thoughts, but it should look great. The grey in the wood goes nicely with the leather, and the tan goes with the rest of the interior.
