Heading cross country!

Heading cross country!

Drove from Kentucky to New York last week to pick up my daughter in Hoboken for my co- pilot. As I was exiting the freeway for JFK, I hit something in the road that blew out a tire and bent the rim. Called tesla service at 7:am Monday morning. They had a new tire and rim on by 9 am. Left JFK supercharger at 9:45. Stopped in Hoboken and on to Newark, De. Full range charge and left with 258 miles. Pulled into Somerset sc with 11 miles rang left. Somerset to Macedonia in 3 hrs. It was snowing so the leg to Maumee, Ohio was slow. Got in at 2:30 am and couldn't get to the supercharger because of the snow that hadn't been plowed. Went to a Hampton inn 1/2 mile away and called Tesla. The guy told me to get some sleep and he would see what he could do. I went back to the sc at 8 am and it was clear. Are these guys the best or what! Headed out to Mishawaka with temp at 6 degrees. I'll keep you up to date if there is interest.

Maybe someone can help me plan a trip from Chicago to Hartford Connecticut. We're in no hurry. I can't find a easy-to-read highway map with the Superchargers on it. Is there a site available (somewhat like Mapquest, but with Superchargers available?)

tscollect | March 15, 2014

If you are a AAA member contact them and ask them to plan the trip for you. AAA needs more requests to get up to speed for those of us driving EV's.

We are in the initial stages of planning a trip from Chicago to NJ with our MS60 in 2 weeks. It's not the most direct route but following the Superchargers will seem to work.

Chicago suburb
Mishawaka, IN
skip Angola)
Maumee, OH
Macedonia, OH
Somerset, PA
Hagerstown, MD
Newark, DE

This is a very straightforward trip. Go to the Tesla supercharger web site and identify all of the superchargers you will need and write them down (there is not an interactive way to do it in the car yet). When driving, go to the navigational screen and under places there is a section with all the active superchargers. Go to the next one on your route, select it and you will be guided to the next one in turn. Make sure you charge to a level a bit higher than you need ( I give myself an extra 30-40 miles). I hope this is what you wanted.

billreeves | March 15, 2014

The web site has all of the Tesla superchargers on it. Interactive so you can zoom in and see your route and where the superchargers are. In the car, it's more efficient to let the car direct you, but for planning purposes it's a great site.

I love these cars. I travelled from ontario canada to the detroit auto show to see the s. The memory foam seats were the most comfortable in the building.I love everything about this car.I only wish i could afford one. Great Job Tesla

sorry to resurrect an old thread, but @John Glenney, you are selling your Tesla?

forum won't let me post the link, but on autotrader in San Rafael, CA 94901 there is a 2013 Tesla for sale that claims "First Telsa to drive across country using superchargers."

ok yes, I was perusing used Teslas... :)

negarholger | February 21, 2015

@logicalthinker - yes, Ivy is for sale... John had a thread about it but I can't find it right now.

Captain_Zap | February 21, 2015

John popped in the forums one day to give one of us first shot at this history making steed. He got a P85D.

logicalthinker | February 22, 2015

Wow if i were a collector, that's one used car I'd like to buy and baby for the next 50 years.

If the world is transformed by Tesla, that car should have some really good value by then. Might need a new battery pack by then but maybe not if you keep it at 60% continually. And besides, collector cars don't need their full range.

That car deserves to end up in a museum of world history a hundred years from now. Children will shuttle in with their parents on the nationwide hyperloop to get a glimpse of the ancient-looking car. "They had to plug their car in!" "That was before TACs (Tesla Automatic Connectors) became ubiquitous, son"
Dad, look at this charging station "it says it...""Just a moment son, I'm getting a hologram QuantEnt® call from your mom on Mars."

J.T. | February 22, 2015

@logicalthinker Time to wake up, son.

JohnGlenney | February 22, 2015

yes, I have Ivy listed in the auto trader. I have reduced the price to 69k and I will sell it this week. I have a vacation house in Calistoga and my wife won't let me bring out my new p85D (Dee-Dee) until Ivy is sold. While Ivy runs like the day I got to Hawthorne a year ago, It is time to move on. We will always have the South Dakota winter to remember.

JohnGlenney | February 22, 2015

Autotrader is a little slow and I don't check my e-mail very often. Text or call if you want more info. 8595335814

logicalthinker | February 22, 2015

JT, aww, come on, just imagine. I give it >1% chance of being somewhat representative of reality in 100 yrs. :) QuantEnt of course standing for Quantum Entanglement --> faster than light communications....

logicalthinker | February 22, 2015

@John Glenney, Wow I wish I could help you out with that sale. I sincerely hope you find a worthy buyer who will take care of Ivy.

J.T. | February 22, 2015

@logicalthinker I can only hope your dreams come true. With Elon around anything is possible.

SkyWalker | March 13, 2015

Thank you John and Jill for sharing your journey. This thread needs a bump so newbies like myself will see it!

gerrysha | May 31, 2015

Well screw me, John Glenney 62 year old biochemist!! Remember me, Gerry Shaw 62 year old biochemist, sort of? I got a new Model 85D about 6 weeks ago and have happily done almost 6,000 miles in it. We must meet up at some Supercharger or somewhere. Will attempt to call or email if I can still find your contact information. Or just email me, by UF email like works, though I actually don't, work I mean, having retired from that a couple of years ago.

Cheers! Gerry

Is there a mileage charge for repairs in Wyoming? I'd like to eliminate a doggie door.

Red Sage ca us | February 13, 2016

Well, at least the 'Sort by Quantity of Posts' option seems to work fine...

SamO | February 13, 2016

Great thread!

SamO | September 21, 2017

JohnGlenney . . . real American hero . . . beat Tesla by 9 days :-)

Captain_Zap | September 21, 2017

Thanks for bumping the thread SamO. It was fun to re-live the excitement that the community experienced. It is just too bad that some of the photos disappeared.
