High Powered Wall Connector

High Powered Wall Connector

Have there been any indications that this connector might change for the model X or future models?
If they did, would they likely use an adaptor...doesn't the roadster have this option for the newer connectors?

Thinking about getting the HPHC to use as a level 2 charger for my plug-in car for now until I get the Tesla model in the future...that way I don't need to buy two differing connectors...

Completely different beasts. The Tesla home charge cords deliver AC electricity to the car and the chargers are located in the car. The charge cord that comes with the car powers one in car charger at up to 40 amps, the High Power can power two on the car chargers at 40 amps each or total 80 amps.

I haver two Nissan Leafs and a Tesla. I can charge the Tesla using an adapter on the Blink charger but there is no way to charge the leafs with the Tesla High Power since it delivers AC directly to the Tesla on board car chargers.

I love the fact Tesla put the chargers in the car. Because they did that you can plug into virtually any AC plug anywhere. With the Leaf system you are forced to use actual chargers unless you want to charge at 110 volt with their little cord and portable charger.

Tesla had a better idea on how to charge.

If that wasn't totally clear The Tesla power input is AC and as far as I know every other car takes DC from an off car source.

But a Tesla can also take massive amounts of DC that's how the super chargers work and why you can use a blink or other charger with an adapter.

hmm...then I think I will wait on the level 2 charger for now since it really only drops my charge time from 6 hours to 2.5, until I get the tesla...

Actually the Leaf has an onboard charger (3.3kw for older models and 6.6kw) for newer ones. The Leaf portable charger is just a J1772 EVSE. There is a modification for it to convert it to 240V.

The J1772 EVESs are not chargers, but similar to what Tesla supplies in their mobile connector. As a matter of fact, there are several people who have just cut off the end of a Tesla mobile connector and attached a J1772 connector to it. Both a Tesla (with adapter) and a Leaf can charge from the same mobile connector.

Alex, you are correct. I was trying to be a little to simple in the answers. The AC Leaf on board are kind of pitiful.

Bottom line is it would not make much sense to try to use a Tesla HP charge cable on low power car chargers.

The high power charger cost 1200 dollars. If you order the dual onboard chargers as an option the high power charger is basically free.

Buy the dual chargers and HPWC with a car order. $2700
Add a second car charger after delivery $ 3800
Buy just the HPWC stand alone $1200

Based on that and assuming no changes in how these sell sure makes more sense to get the dual chargers and HPWC as part of a car order than to buy as aftermarket parts.

That and the 80 amps won't do you any good if you don't have on board chargers that can take the power. You can power down the HPWC to lower amps with some internal dip switch settings.

So it still seems to not make much sense to pay extra for something you basically get for free with a car order with dual chargers. Then have to set the amps low and jury rig a way to adapt it that messes up the cords.

I charged the Tesla with my Blink charger for a few months then got tired of having to manually open the charge door and deal with the adapter that doesn't unplug easily from the car. Have to push the release on the j1772 plug to get the car to let go but the you also unplug from the adapter so you have to manually grab the little adapter and pull it out.

Went to the Tesla 50 amp RV plug and cord. Super simple push the button the charge door opens push the button the cord unplugs all with a smaller sleeker plug. After you use the tesla plugs the J1772 seem like dinosaurs. Then installed the HPWC and got more speed and clean easy Tesla design.

Sorry to ramble on but I went thru all the brain damage you are going thru for the last three years. Right now I could not recommend anything but the Tesla and the Tesla charging systems. Makes everything else look old and out of date. So far Tesla has nailed it and I am glad they went beyond the government committee designed J1772 charger system.
