HPWC Delivery Timing Concerns

I was just wondering for those of you who have taken delivery of your MS and opted for the HPWC if it was delivered to you BEFORE you got your car and by how much. I received a call from Bridget, my D.E.S. last Wednesday that my car would be ready yesterday. We're out of town and won't be back home until Tuesday. I setup with her delivery on Sat. August 3rd which was OK by them. I then called her yesterday to tell her that I had set up an installation appointment with the company that the Canoga Park Tesla branch recommended for the charger installs and that I'm having both NEMA 14-50 and HPWC done and would need the HPWC no later than Wednesday. She emailed me that she had contacted Tesla Headquarters and was waiting for an reply and would let me know. It may be that I have to call the installation guys out to the house twice. Has everybody gotten their HPWC a week or so before the car was delivered? | July 28, 2013

I simply e-mailed Tesla and asked them to send me the HPWC so I could get is installed ahead of delivery (I still only had a delivery window at the time) and they FedExed it out the same day.

BTW, assume i will take the electrician a couple of trips to get things done--once to do the site survey and once to do the actual install.

I received my HPWC approx 2 weeks after finalizing and 1-2 weeks before expected delivery in 1-2 weeks If you haven't received it I would definitely call Tesla. I received it without any request other than placing the order. Was actually surprised they sent me a $1,200 piece of equipment that I technically have not paid for yet!

OH - make sure the serial number of your HPWC ends in "C". That is the latest iteration.

Sorry for being ignorant. What is HPWC? Does everyone need it? I do need to have 240V installed. Is that what this is referring to? Thank you.

I have the HPWC and twin chargers, I think a 220v, 40amp outlets would have pretty much gotten me to the same place.

HPWC = High Power Wall Connector

You only need it if you want to charge at 62 miles of range per hour (80A).

You'll want the C part because earlier versions had some twitchy fuses that blew when charging at 80A. But it doesn't matter because your car will stubbornly refuse to charge at 80A until Tesla is sure the fuse issue is addressed in the majority of installations.

To be fair, Tesla is operating with an over abundance of caution, as well they should. If you get the C version of the HPWC, you can override the warning and charge at 80A. But you can't do a scheduled charge at greater than 60A until Tesla reenabled that in software.

i got it 4 weeks before my tesla is scheduled to be delivered. im picking up my car this friday, i got my chargers installed last week.

i had my electrician put in both the hpwc and a 14-50.

I ordered mine online and separate from the car purchase. Got it 2 weeks before the car which let me prepare.

One advantage to this is reducing (by $1200) the capitalized basis for the car's reg fees and insurance.

I'm going to get on the phone to my D.E.S. tomorrow and email Tesla about this and hopefully through FedEX it can get to me by Wednesday.

I got my HPWC 3 weeks before the scheduled delivery of my 85P later this week. The electrician went overboard and installed a 2 gauge, 4 wire tray quality cable which is quite thick and heavy. Connected it to a a 100 Amp/240V breaker in the panel. I did not have a spare dual slot, so had swap 4 singles with duals breakers elsewhere to open up the dual slot. Looks industrial grade!

Did I need all this? Nope. I could have done with a 40Amp/240V. Would have saved the HPWC, and $150 in materials. Just went overboard. After I got it all hooked up, I invited a friend with a SigP to test the HPWC. Got a warning not to exceed 60A. Not sure if I got a "C" HPWC, not able to read the tinny letters tonight.

In reality, I am going to charge at may be 20-30 Amps every night. The dual charger will come useful if public HPWC are ever installed in public places.

I couldn't get my head around far enough to read it so I took a picture with my iphone. Sure enough I have a B revision. Tesla will fix it so I'm not worried. The "problem" reportedly affects << 3% of the units. If you don't have a C unit, don't panic, just get on the list for the replacement fuses.

Talked to my D.E.S. today and she said that my HPWC will arrive at my house tomorrow via FedEx. So I'm pretty happy about that! We'll see.

Now that I've opened the box the label on the outside of the box says:

(P) Tesla Part Number:
1008488 - 99 - C

(S) Tesla Serial Number:

Yet on the back of the HPWC itself the label says:

(P) TPN: 1011831 - 99 - B
(S) TSN: T13G0006197
Does this mean that this is a refurbished "B" unit that now has the "C" fuses?

A bit strange isn't it?

You can open up your unit and see how the fuses are placed. The "-C" 200A fuses lay horizontally. I've never checked, but would assume the serial and part numbers between the box and unit would match.

I just checked the unit inside the box and it has two completely different serial numbers - one on the side, one on the back, and both are totally different than the serial number printed on the box. Part numbers on the actual unit say -B, but part number on box says -C.

I just called my delivery specialist who is checking to see what's going on. Oh boy!

Just ask your specialist to see if he can rush it. For example, I ordered my car in mid July with a stated delivery date of the car for August 24. Well, I'm going on vacation and won't be here for mid August so I asked my specialist if they could rush the HPWC and sure enough yesterday I got it via Fed Ex so I can have it installed well before the car's arrival.

So I I called my D.E.S. today about this and left a message but haven't heard back. Then I went to the Tesla service/delivery center today in Van Nuys and related my story. The fellow there said that they would look into that and get back to me by phone or email sometime today. Their initial thought was that these were most likely refurbished old units to the "C" version but couldn't be absolutely sure without checking first. He also said that they have gotten very few if any calls about HPWC malfunction and that they would send somebody out to remedy the situation if something did happen. So if nothing substantive happens today regarding replacement, I'll just have what they sent me installed and hope for the best. It was amazing to see about 50 Model Ss in one place. I don't know if mine was there or not yet, but I'm supposed to pick it up on Saturday. I also liked the individual portable tent/carports that were read and white that said Tesla on them.

Here is how the old HPWC looks like inside w/ the bad fuses (from Edmund's):

Even though mine is a -B part, the fuse section looks totally different. The fuses appear larger and are mounted horizontally rather than vertically as in the above image. I notified my DS just in case, who is looking into it, but I am satisfied that I have the redesigned version.

Yep. Ditto here too. This thread got me wondering. My box it was delivered in is exactly like Warkovision described.

OK folks. I finally heard back. No worries.
Here's the explanation that I received in an email from Tesla Parts:

I was able to get in touch with one of our heads of Service & Parts Operations, regarding your High Power Wall Connector.

This was the response:

There are TWO Part Numbers.

1008488-99-C is the correct PN and is located on the outside of the box. This is the PN for the entire KIT/ASSEMBLY.

Inside the box, has the Tesla Serial Number (TSN) and the PN for the HPWC body. That part has a *B part number (1011831-99-B) but it does not tell you what fuses are inside. Please do not go by this PN to distinguish the internal fuses.

In a nutshell, since you stated that your HPCW has the “C” on the outside of the box, it therefore is the newest version (with the updated fuses).

My s85 is in Philadelphia and we are looking at delivery on the 8th.
My HPWC, is a joke.
Still not here. I have the elctrician ready. I have been working through the delivery specialist all week to figure it out.
They are charging me $35 to ship it here and we started this last thursday the 26th.
Something about "it was mistakenly sent via ground, so we canceled that and are shipping it air".
Today, they are sending it overnight express and claim it will be here tomorrow.
I asked if it was FedEx or UPS? Did they have a tracking number....

Have to say, this is the first part of this whole new experience that causes some concern for me. Growing pains for Tesla I guess.

@Sailor, Yes this timely delivery issue has been problematic for some on the forum. I called my delivery specialist last Friday and told her that I needed the HPWC at my house no later than Wednesday because the electricians were coming early morning Thursday (today.) She said no problem and it arrived last Tuesday for no charge. Maybe it was easier for them given that I'm in Van Nuys near a service center but I think that Tesla should get the HPWC to you on time without extra charge given what they say about the process on their website.

Emailed my delivery guy yesterday after hours and got response in just a few minutes. They are shipping the unit today and sending me the tracking number tomorrow. Very fast response, really unexpected!

My DS also confirmed that as long as the part number on the box ends in -C, you have the latest product.
