I legally robbed Tesla & They loved every minute of it. P.S. Thankyou. (Long Read)

Just kidding. But for the record...No i didn't rob anyone. This is just a story about how I got my 2017 Tesla Model S a month ago @ 24 years old.

This is my first post & i've been reading on the forums for years and i figured it was about time to ask the community whether or not im crazy or just super smart & lucky!

Its a long story. So bear with me.

I started religiously following Tesla almost 3 years ago or so when they released Autopilot 1.0 (My timing may be wrong) and it was all over the news about the self driving features. I was mind blown and was like i gotta go test drive this thing...

I test drove a P90DL (not sure which year) from a Tesla mall location in jersey when this was like the only location near NYC (i live in brooklyn,NY). Was Absolutely Mind Blown. Customer Experiance Specialist took me off the highway and into a closed parking lot to make me do launch mode which then made my girlfriend's (now fiance') brain hit the back of her skull when this thing took off.

from that moment the both of us were hooked....Then we saw the price tag and our hearts sank. i was like ill never be able to afford this car for like another 10 years....i was 21 or so at the time.

2 years later, after reading hundreds of tesla forum posts, watching Hundreds of Teslanomics/Know You Know/Like Tesla Youtube Videos later.... This happened...

I was on my way to go visit my family's house in jersey but realized i left wayyyyyyyyy early and i had alot of time to spare. While also realizing that Autopilot 2.0 got the "so called" latest update to put it on par with AP1.0....in the back of my head im like, let me go see how the new autopilot is for fun... i searched a tesla showroom on google and i picked a random location since there were like 7 in the vicinity.

I head there. Got there early. Waited for the location to open. and i walk in the showroom...

I completely froze the moment i walked in because it just so happened that i picked the most random tesla showroom off the cuff and who greets me? the same freakin sales rep that gave me my first test drive in a tesla 3 years ago from a completely different location. i had a feeling something great was about to happen...

so with that said... time to speed this story up. thanks for reading so far!

Test drove new 2017 75d, showed me autopilot 2.0... didn't get as thorough of a test drive as i wanted but i think it was because this guy knew i was coming in for an experience and not a purchase.

but then we went back and he told me the INSIDE SCOOP.

forget new inventory models, forget CPO's. this guy literally found Tesla GOLD for me.

He found me a showroom/test drive/service vehicle 2017 90D New fascia AP2.0 Enhanced Autopilot, fully loaded every option except rear child seats (dont need em i dont have kids.)

& a way to get me in it.

i told him dude...i cant afford this thing its gunna be like 1500 a month plus insurance. no way jose. Side note: I just got a Brand New 2017 Honda CRV Touring edition 6 months ago for myself...(bought it cause its the nicest most affordably priced thing at the time with steering assist and acc cruise control & i had to have something remotely close to self driving capabilities)

he was like do you know anyone with a vehicle you could trade in? Literally the light bulb went off in my head. My father had a 3 year old chevy he didn't want anymore.

Here is the part where you tell me if im crazy or just amazingly smart & lucky...

total price on vehicle:

2017 90D AP2.0 (2265 Miles) - $89,500
- Red Multi Coat - 1,500
- Sunroof - 2,000
- All black Interior 3,300
- Enhanced AP2.0 - $5000
- 72 Amp Upgrade - 1,500
- Smart Air Suspension - 2,500
- Premium Interior Package - 3,500
- Premium Sound - 2,500
- Subzero - 1,000

$112,300 + Fees.
$113,500 - Before Taxes.
+ Taxes = $6,700.
Minus - $21,500 SHOWROOM DISCOUNT
Minus - $1000.00 Refferal Code
Minus - $500 NYC EV Incentive
Minus - $15,000 Trade in Value of my fathers car.
Minus - $4900 Down Payment

Leased it: Total over 36 months $15,500.

My lease payment is $429.00 a month. for a $120k car. & i gave my 2017 crv to my dad to replace his car.

Now before you say "but you put down like 20k to get the car. you never do that on a lease" for the record my ultimate goal was to buy the car at the end & get in to the car with as affordable as a payment as possible so i can have it NOW. 3 years from now if i can afford to send it back to them and get the newest model or a *P120DL* (If they make one by then) i will...if not im still very very happy and couldn't be more happier to be a proud Tesla driver and keep this one.

Final Thought: Is this a rare situation? am i lucky? have you heard of this happening before? the delivery team literally told me the only people my age affording this car are celebrities. & im most certainly not a celebrity. i always thought alot of the people who have interest in this car are people who have a well paying 9-5 and have the ability to buy the car in full.

when i drive this car around the first thing my friends & family ask is how the heck did i afford it?...and then i tell them how i got it and they were like "dude you got a steal".

I am in no way trying to brag about this. I am very appreciative and so happy to have this car and i am very responsible. I have also been able to refer 3 new tesla owners who took delivery (1 of which is my mother in law who bought a fully loaded model x literally 2 weeks after i got mine from the same tesla location where i took delivery. the staff there were so happy i was able to bring a new customer through their doors.) P.S. Cant wait for arachnids.

so finally id just like to say thank you to all of you guys out there who have educated me through blog posts & youtube videos into getting (In my opinion) the Best, Safest, Quickest, most efficient 4 wheeled vehicle on the road... but why...why...they heck didnt they put a suit hook in the back...lol...

Ready for the icing on the cake? I dont pay for electric at my home (its included in rent and landlord knows i bought an electric car) #micdrop #nobrainer #elonforthewin #nextstepmars

TeslaKU | October 4, 2017

Similar discount on a "showroom" 90D with 4 miles on the odometer upon delivery.

Financially you have no equity in the car with a ton up upfront cash. If you can sell the car for more than the residual, then you did OK. The gamble is on your part and the odds are not in your favor.

If you keep the car, then you served your goal by getting into a car that you technically could not afford.

Good luck.

djjohnny110 | October 4, 2017

thankyou kevin.

C02Free | October 4, 2017

Before you go touting yourself as one of the few non-celebs your age to get into a tesla, I'm going to guess you didn't have a paid off 2017 CRV that you just "gave" to your dad in exchange for the $15K he handed you with his trade-in. So will you continue to be making the payments on that CRV on top of the Tesla? If that's the case, way to go! If not, you got a handout from daddy and there's not too much to be proud of here. $21.5K is a pretty good showroom discount, though!

djjohnny110 | October 4, 2017

The 2017 Crv was a lease & i promised my dad i would continue paying for the lease up until the value of the amount of money they gave me for his trade in. so in a way its a win win situation because my dad got rid of his old car and i got the car i really wanted. PLUS i can swap cars whenever i need the truck for work and dont wanna overwork the tesla. win win win on my part in my head? i can afford both payments and its nice to be able to choose between electric car and ice truck.

C02Free | October 4, 2017

In that case, nicely done! Enjoy the ride and hope all works out. I'm curious what the difference in monthly payments would have been between lease and purchase; was there a sharp difference and thus your decision for opting to lease?

djjohnny110 | October 4, 2017

i was only approved for lease. and i think the monthly on the finance payment was like 1100 after all the discounts. so yeah forget that. after 3 years when the tesla lease is up my payment will jump to 700ish a month if i wanna keep and finance but by then, yet again i will either be able to afford the newest model or continue the payments god willing. plus i will already have history with tesla which would thus make it 5 times easier to get re-approved!

djjohnny110 | October 4, 2017

side note: if they actually pull through and make ap2.0 fully self drivable...im pretty sure all of our cars will be worth a million dollars compared to stone age ice cars that will be on the road. fingers crossed right?

Anthony J. Parisio | October 5, 2017

djjohnny110,
Good job and welcome to the family. I wish you all the best. Don't forget to write about your experience and review of you Model S.

Mathew98 | October 5, 2017

@djjohnny110 - Congrats on your new ride. It worked out well for your situation. You sound like a responsible lad and found a way to work it in your favor to have your dream car much earlier than anticipated.

Just don't give in the temptation to race with other ICEhole...

PhillyGal | October 5, 2017

Congrats! While it's not conventional in terms of your financing structure, nor is it financially smart (literally no brand new car is) I want to both welcome and congratulate you. Yes, some owners can afford to buy the car in cash. Good for them. But shame on anyone who judges people who can't do that but get the car anyway.

I'm not nearly as young but I had just turned 30 (my husband 29) when I convinced him we needed to test drive a Model S. 6 months later we picked up our baby girl, having traded in a paid of 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, put a couple bucks down and took out a laughable 8 year loan (!) for the rest.

You know how many old dudes would chastise me for an 8 year loan? Screw em! The interest rate is 1.11% and I get to drive the car of my dreams long before retirement age.

djjohnny110 | October 5, 2017

@phillygal thats a great deal too! I never heard of 8 year loans but wow at 1% thats awesome. And yep, definetly yes, we get to have our dream cars before anyone would ever expect us to. We are here today and gone tomorrow. You never know whats coming round the other corner. So if we can afford it then i think its appropriate to be good to ourselves before we are stuck on a fixed pension budget after 65 years old.

thankyou everyone for being so welcoming.

Also, i have two questions if someone can help me with this:

Yes i want to review my car and post it on youtube but i also feel i should do a video about the breakdown of how i acually got it? Cause i feel it could motivate people who felt that the car was out of their price range to go and try and make it work like i did. Also i barely see any teslas where i live maybe i see one every 3 or 4 weeks should i do like a vlog channel for what its like to have a tesla in NYC?

I dont wanna be similar or repetitive to all the other tesla youtubers. They are doing a great job and i have no idea where i would start.

The other question i have is... i have 3 referrals right now and i know ill get more in the future but i dont think ill have enough time to get two more to win the unveiling invite...

I really wanna go. Does anyone know of any backdoor ways like emailing tesla and asking for a press pass or just going in with someone else? Just showing up to the event? Im curious why the invite says vip invite...does that mean they have general admission?

Shesmyne2 | October 5, 2017

Welcome to the family DJ.
Your excitement comes across in your posts.

Enjoy the ride!

Still Grinning ;-)

djjohnny110 | October 5, 2017

thankyou!

Mathew98 | October 5, 2017

@djjohnny110 - If you traverse through the parking lot named FDR Drive, you'd see a few Tesla's every day. I'll be the one in the red S60 with black racing stripes waving at you.

PhillyGal | October 5, 2017

You don't need to follow a format to make YouTube videos. I just get on a blab about whatever. (Electric Jen)
Though I'm not too far away if you'd rather meet up and do a video together. My audience isn't huge but it's not insignificantly small either. You can also find me on twitter @ElectricJen.

As for the referrals/event invites, they're very hot tickets so I know of no way to get in. They did do it via lottery for the first Model 3 unveiling, which myself and other owners were chosen for but it was a longshot/dumb luck.

PhillyGal | October 5, 2017

Side note: I was recently requested to do the math on my total cost of ownership so if I get around to it, that'll be the topic of my next video.

Silver2K | October 5, 2017

Great job @dj!! Congrats!

Welcome to the nut house!

dj, you'll recognise Mathew on the streets also, he wears a clear bra :)

djjohnny110 | October 5, 2017

@matthew fortunately i dont commute to nyc but i do take my fiance out to dinner once a month to a steak house on the east side on a monday usually at like 10pm and the FDR is a breeze to drive on. gotta watch out for the highway cop hiding by the bk bridge entrance ramp though. smh...having a radar has saved me thousands on speeding tickets, i catch them every time.

djjohnny110 | October 5, 2017

@phillygal thats really great thanks for letting me know. and definitely lets link up, im gunna go follow you now. @perfectdeejays on twitter.

Mathew98 | October 5, 2017

@silver - This dude obviously copied my idea...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gu3YdC2g5hs

stan23 | October 5, 2017

Congrats on the new car, but you get anything joe blow off the street could have gotten. You paid 20K down to get your lease payments low enough for you. At the end of the day, you would have paid $35K to drive this thing three years. Remember, at the end of the lease term you would still owe over $60K to buy it outright. Let's assume you want to finance the residual, you're looking at well over 1100/month over a 5 year term.

The only thing different you did that most 24 year olds can't do is drop $20K for a lease down payment. But if I read things correctly, you need to pay back that $15K to your dad.

djjohnny110 | October 5, 2017

Thanks Stan. Still got the car though. Didnt have to drop 120k for it. thats what im happy about!

ahomestar | October 5, 2017

Congratulation and welcome to the family! Totally see the point that you don't have to drop 120k for it :)
I am a 24-year old too, and just got my X with 0.99% loan + my Mercedes trade-in.

Silver2K | October 5, 2017

djjohnny110

Your radar detector will not work behind the tesla windshield because of the metallic film/ particles in the glass. You will have to install behind the bumper somehow

Bob12345 | October 6, 2017

You legally robbed your Dad, not Telsa. :)

TeslaKU | October 6, 2017

@djjohnny110 - Keep in mind that Tesla literally dumped the 90 series in July. My state doesn't give the tax incentives that yours does, but the pricing I got was SUPER discounted like yours. In fact, the price dropped an additional $3500 while it was being transported to me. I received that additional discount. Tesla was moving to the two car (75 / 100) model of business, so anything that wasn't a 75 or 100 was priced to move. I doubt you will find a NEW 75D or 100D for the same discount that you received unless they are a high mileage loaner.

djj, great story! You remind me of me when I was your age, concrats!

Btw, what part of Brooklyn do you live? I hope you have a garage or at least a driveway to keep it in, no alternate parking for that red beauty.

stevenroglen | October 6, 2017

Whats the projected value after the lease is up? 429 sounds good, but it's that plus whatever you pay on the CRV as well. so my guess is you're paying roughly 800 a month for a car payment. It looks like they did you an absolute favor on the lease price when you punch it in using the estimator on the website (included down payment and referral). You didn't rob from them as much as they gave it to you, but nice either way.

Bighorn | October 6, 2017

I totally get it, but are you robbing your future self by neglecting your retirement funding?

Bighorn | October 6, 2017

I missed what your mileage allowance is. You're basically paying $36k for 36 mo or a thousand dollars a month. Conventional depreciation shows about $1 per mile when newish, so if you got more than 1000 miles/month in allowance, you did alright. Otherwise, right on par.

djjohnny110 | October 6, 2017

@ahomestar thankyou so much! Awesome! Glad to see you got the car too!

@silver2k dude i spent $550 on my passport max 1&2 radars. I have caught them every time. Always worked in my other cars. And from my experiance over the past month it has been working fine in the tesla! Not a crazy speeder just not a sucker for the police that hide around bends and over hill crests. But with autopilot i find myself relaxing alot more often and not too worried about how fast i get somewhere.

@bob12345 - haha funny! But im pretty sure my parents enjoy riding around in my new truck. They dont care. Theyre very happy!

@kevinu69 - hey man yes i know they discontinued it! And thats great to hear as it was on its way to you they even discounted it again! Thats hilarious. Awesome. And yeah thats why i figured i was very lucky to just walk into the showroom and right place and the right time to find them trying to get rid of the 90’s! The discount i got was sick.

@ms - dude stop spamming peoples blog posts.

@mm7ny - hey man yes! I live in brooklyn on the bensonhurst/gravesend border. If you wanna follow me on twitter or instagram its @perfectdeejays let me know who u are from the forums. & yes i got a great driveway for it. Luckily for me summon still works on my pitched down driveway, so i get out on flat ground and it backs itself down the pitched driveway.

@stevenroglen - thankyou for your comment! And yes between both cars the payment is around 800$ its still great because i have the option to switch between the two when needed. And my parents are in a safer nicer car.

@bighorn - funny one. Retirement fund? by the time im 60 something and can collect with the way this countries luck is the stock market will crash 4 times over. & theyll be like 2 more recessions. There wont be any money to collect! So i guess enjoy myself now right and shoot for the moon while i still have my youth right? I also budgeted myself very well with my business so i can afford having this shiny red tesla.
& as far as ur depreciation estimate. For the most part like i said im pretty much 60% sure im gunna keep the car in the end so never worried about my mileage. Heck if i find someone with a plus one to the semi event ill be putting on another 8000 miles in the next two weeks right? I dont have enough time to get two more refferals. Very upset about that.

djjohnny110 | October 6, 2017

Id honestly rather the semi invite over the arachnid wheels....someone help me here.

Bighorn | October 6, 2017

You've got until Nov 16th for the semi reveal now.
Study up on compounding and what a great advantage you're at putting money away now vs 10+ years from now.
What's your residual value at 36 months? Be sure to budget for mileage overages because it's highly likely you'll want something different than your 3 year old car at that point.

Silver2K | October 6, 2017

It seems the newer windshields allow radar detector use, but still useless. You need a laser jammer these days because the detector just notifies you you got caught these days. Basically if you have a detector, you're dead in the water because once the laser hits you, you're caught.

Silver2K | October 6, 2017

P II

forget detectors make police officers your friends like other do here. I've been pulled over quite a few time with no tickets issued. I imagine that will happen more often now that I upgraded from my p85+.

Ps: I almost got pulled over today dragging, but the cop left my bumper and pulled the other guy over :)

djjohnny110 | October 7, 2017

@bighorn I just saw the article! i guess that gives me more time! thank you for telling me. ill also look into the compouding thing. the residual for my tesla after 36 months is $68,000

@Silver2k , 95% of cops do not use laser by me. I have only seen laser 2 times in the 3 years ive been traveling with this thing. but also im not stupid and i will slow down around turns and before hill crests if im not sure if they are hiding. always catch them on the 34.7 KA Band. Just dont wanna be a sucker!

Tropopause | October 7, 2017

djjohnny,

I hear you when it comes to the philosophy, "We are here today and gone tomorrow." but you must also ask yourself, "What if I live to be 100?" The average American has less than $25,000 in retirement savings. Listen to Bighorn and others here so you can enjoy yourself now as well as tomorrow.

Drive safely and enjoy your new Tesla.

C02Free | October 7, 2017

I also agree with @Bighorn and @Tropopause, although was hesitant to bring up the subject - since Bighorn did it, I'll jump on board.

I would HIGHLY recommend seeking out a financial advisor or studying up yourself. There's differences between pre and post tax accounts, all dependent on your situation and income level. Could also look into a Universal Life Insurance policy to be able to draw from later down the road, and if not draw from, it's there for any future kids/spouse.

You work hard, enjoy yourself, but don't set your future self up for failure down the road like so many celebs and athletes.

pete | October 7, 2017

I also leased my model S. The only problem I find is I’ve had it for about 14 months, and I’ve already driven over 17,000 miles. So I’m going to have to taper down my driving or I’ll have to write a big check at the end when I drive over 36,000 miles. I don’t regret it for a second though. Most fun I’ve ever had!
Welcome to the family!
