The interior nailed it. Yes, very simple lines. I got tired of all that plastic and same old looking on other cars. Think about it.
I would put the best, fine materials available and that would be a great looking interior. That is what I call a genuine interior. Just mark my words and you will see Benz, BMW and every single one in the industry copying that design the day that design is disclosed. In addition it keeps costs down. Man, this guy Musk is smart. I also liked that curved wheel base. Unique too. Just expect Audi copying that one really quick. Kia will be the second one copying it.

When I see the white model potential final release car, I noticed that if it had more black details in the rear it could make car look better. Maybe they will still make changes, but that is what I noticed.

I wish my rear could be improved a little bit, but it's very functional, and I'm sure the design on the car is all about low C/D.

The black at the rear of ICE vehicles is to disguise the soot. Especially on diesel powered manual transmission AUDI, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen products.

Yes that Musk guy does have good taste of cars. Why wouldn't he? He bought a McLaren F1 with money he got from Paypal sale. The car he had before that was a 1967 Jaguar E-Type, the car Enzo Ferrari called the most beautiful car ever made,

Carlk, Elon Musk owned great cars and I am fully aware of his background, but many others do and they continue with their bad taste until they die. I am sure that the head of other companies also owned stylish cars, but the business mind doesn't even come close to Elon's. Hey Red Sage, good observation about the black accents on ICE cars. Let's see how it looks live. I guess it is very proportional and with 20'' it may look great. It is like the Benz C300; that car looks so plain without 19'' or 20'' rims. Then you place the right size rims and the whole design makes sense.

"The black at the rear of ICE vehicles is to disguise the soot."

Hmm... Got a link to back that up?

Red Sage ca us | April 29, 2017

carlk: Actually, Elon got the McLaren F1 even earlier -- when he got around $22,000,000 as his cut from the sale of Zip2 to, Compaq, I think it was... There is video of his taking delivery at YouTube. Heck, he even looks younger than I did at that age. From there he went on to found X-dot-om, which joined with another firm to become PayPalX, then settled on simply PayPal before being sold to ebay.

carlk | April 29, 2017

MarlonBrown You can't equal a twenty something who has just made his first millions to some filthy rich guys just throwing money away. Red Sage Elon bought the Jaguar when he got his first bonus check from Zip2 too. Elon is obviously a car guy. He appreciates great cars and it shows in cars he has made. It's not the least coincidental.

Red Sage ca us | April 29, 2017

I believe Elon admitted that he paid far too much for the Jaguar. But he wanted it. I can't blame him. I'd have done the same for a 1967 Corvette Stingray at that age. I think he still has the Jaguar, but says owning one is like being in an abusive relationship.

Carlk, car designers have been trying to deliver unique cara for a while. I am not sure if only access to other cars and passion are factors. Most car designers have failed lately. Look at the latest Tesla nuance: it seems the Model 3 interior is going to be the most minimalist in a luxury sedan our lifetime. Instead of competing with the same old plastic console that everybody has been using and abusing, they decided to opt for quality materials(apparently) and very simple looks. That is a strategic move I think. It will be obvious when other folks try to copy them. Just wait to see Audi, Benz etc trying to do the same. It will be apparent though.

MarlonBrown I'm only saying Elon does appreciate nice cars but he did not get any idea from those cars he has owned. Far from it the high tech minimalist interior design came from his first principle thinking. This is the design he thought fits a modern high tech car. The rest of course could only design by analogy. Established luxury car companies wouldn't dare to drift away from the traditional "winning" design formula. The rest car companies would not dare to not copy those "luxury" designs as close as possible. You're right the same thinking would make everyone to follow Tesla's design when consumers start to correlate that to the (best) car. They'd only do it gradually though but in a decade or two you won't seen any buttons or switches in any cars anymore.

BTW here is what Elon said about first principle thinking for people who are not familiar with that. People who claim the Tesla interior is not "luxury" enough fall into the category of thinking by analogy.

“I think it’s important to reason from first principles rather than by analogy. The normal way we conduct our lives is we reason by analogy. [With analogy] we are doing this because it’s like something else that was done, or it is like what other people are doing. [With first principles] you boil things down to the most fundamental truths…and then reason up from there.”

I like the mirror image symmetry of interiors found in early Corvettes and Mustangs. I think the Model 3 does much the same, without having obvious decorative elements taken from jets or paying homage to rockets. Instead, it has a cleanliness associated with science fiction production design. Honest, straightforward, purposeful, and simple.

I prefer that to making car interiors analogous to the 'luxury' exhibited within carriages and stagecoaches during the 19th Century. I also prefer it to the 'workman' philosophy of 'this side is for the DRIVER, that side is for the PASSENGER' that some cars have. I absolutely prefer it to the notion that the front seat is g or 'The HELP' while the rear seat is for the Privileged.
