M3 Performance: To Spoil or Not to Spoil?

M3 Performance: To Spoil or Not to Spoil?

First, I tried to search with limited success; so here goes: After taking delivery in October, I finally have an appointment to have the spoiler installed. I enjoy tracking the car at Watkins Glen once or twice a year (though I've yet to find the right brake pads). So, the question is, will the spoiler improve handling at the track or is it just cosmetic? Should I have it installed or pass? TIA.

Bighorn | July 20, 2019

Cosmetic. I wouldn't.

Madatgascar | July 20, 2019

Cosmetic, and not very good at that. The ends don’t stick tight to the metal, so I get comments that it looks like it is coming off.

JAD | July 20, 2019

On the street it is cosmetic, at high Glen speeds it should improve stability a bit.

carlk | July 20, 2019

" high Glen speeds it should improve stability a bit."

And probably some efficiency too. Although I see nothing wrong with cosmetic reason alone, either for or against (I'm for).

BuffaloBillsFan | July 20, 2019

My spoiler came with the car. I thought all M3 performances had one . . . I didn’t even know that not getting one was an option. FTR, I like the looks.

raqball | July 20, 2019

@BuffaloBillsFan.. Early purchases did not get them nor the dual motor badge. They were given IOU's so to speak and are now getting them in batches... Some are still waiting..

howard | July 20, 2019

If I ever, ever get it I will put it on. It is a great addition to the looks. Helps differentiate it from all the other M3s around here.

BuffaloBillsFan | July 20, 2019

Thanks @raqball. I really like the looks of the spoiler. The badge? Meh. Who the hell cares?

Bighorn | July 20, 2019

@wgrose
The effect was pretty homeopathic compared to the results of their functionally designed rear spoilers. I like the CF spoiler on my S--don't wish to have what was offered on the 3.

Madatgascar | July 20, 2019

@wgrose if it reduces the drag coefficient by .005, I’d say it is pretty much cosmetic.

JAD | July 20, 2019

Wgrose, interesting article, but I think it is a scientific looking sales brochure. I would love to see the real world testing showing a 43 mile gain in range with their spoiler, springs and lip. Just not going to happen, but it sure looks official and seems to provide some interesting info. Thanks.

JAD | July 20, 2019

.005 doesn't sound like much, but the scale is 0-1. A very efficient car is .23, and a bad one is .33 or so. A difference of only .1 Now that .005 is actually a 5% improvement, which is significant, so don't let the small number trick you.

Bighorn | July 20, 2019

@JAD
It was a 2.3% improvement compared to 6.9% for the Unplugged spoiler (200% better). Someone wasn't engineering very hard at Tesla the day they designed it.

JAD | July 20, 2019

Bighorn, the cars total drag was reduced by 2.3%, but I was saying that .005 reduction was 5% of the total difference between a m3 and typical car. Just clarifying the small number was actually significant.

One problem with the study is I didn't see at what speed they are talking. The air flow changes over the spoiler at different speeds so different shapes are better at some speeds than others. Also their spoiler is really two spoiler and you just put on the one you want, one for aero one for downforce. Tesla had one spoiler that is of course a compromise to achieve both.

Nice report, but very misleading in some ways.

lbowroom | July 20, 2019

No point in judging the engineers. A spoiler can improve downforce, efficiency, and aesthetics. Not likely to improve all 3 at once.

Bighorn | July 20, 2019

@lbow
True and they clearly focussed on the latter. Neither drag nor downforce was significantly improved, making it more a subjective styling choice. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Madatgascar | July 20, 2019

Anyway if I had it to do over I would skip it. Mine doesn’t lie flat, and I have seen other posts with the same complaint. Water gets trapped in the gap, dries up there and leaves calcium carbonate stains. There is an irregularity in the carbon fiber that looks like a mistake. I could find better ways to spend $1000.

Madatgascar | July 20, 2019

I will say it looks good from a distance.
Good from far, but far from good.

ODWms | July 20, 2019

I spoiled mine, and like the looks of it if only from an aesthetics standpoint. Would definitely do it again.

ST70 | July 20, 2019

How much $ are the Tesla spoilers going for?

ODWms | July 20, 2019

I’ve heard from $600 - $1000, but I have no real idea.

lbowroom | July 20, 2019

$1000 from Tesla. $230 for a like factory knockoff from RPMTesla. Here's the kicker though, back ordered due to demand....lol!

jfaubl | July 20, 2019

I'm going to do mine when they finally contact me. I got mine at the end of September. Are people just getting an email from Tesla that it's in?

ST70 | July 20, 2019

@lbowroom- where do you see that price from Tesla?

Magic 8 Ball | July 20, 2019

If you are in bay area I just ran across this. A TESLA OEM spoiler for $450

Joshan | July 20, 2019

I have a AWD LR but bought and put a spoiler on it anyways!

shawncordell | July 20, 2019

I elected to have mine installed. And I’m glad I did...

ODWms | July 21, 2019

jfaubl - I took delivery at the end of September also. Finally got notice it was in and had my spoiler installed April 13th. 7 month wait but it was worth it. I love the look!

lbowroom | July 21, 2019

ST70 - Sorry, am I wrong about that? I can't remember where I originally read that but in casual conversation with service lead he didn't correct me when I mentioned it. But no, I didn't get a written quote.

raqball | July 21, 2019

When the SC was installing mine they told me the price for the spoiler was $650.. Not sure if that as their cost or what they will eventually sell them for., Take with a grain of salt as I saw nothing with my own eyes that confirmed the price he told me..

FISHEV | July 21, 2019

Spoil!!!

Had my Model 3 lined up with @raqball's at Tesla service center the other day. From every angle it makes a positive change in appearance.

Sending my non-working $450 Cheadmo adapter brick back to Tesla and getting the Executive spoiler from Tates for $169.00

https://www.taptes.com/products/carbon-fiber-rear-trunk-spoiler-for-mode...

raqball | July 21, 2019

Yeah I dig the spoiler @FISHEV.. I personally think it makes the rear end look better.. If you want the Tesla official one like mine the SC told me they will eventually sell them..

Lonestar10_1999 | July 21, 2019

@FISHEV - are you still planning on trading in your M3 for a Kona? If so, it would be a complete waste of money to accessorize it. Perhaps you are being dishonest about trading for a Kona.

lbowroom | July 21, 2019

Great topic to drop your Chademo crap into. Tag team duo at it again

raqball | July 21, 2019

@lbowroom Why don't you grow up? He said he was going to send it back and buy a spoiler with the money.. Who cares other than obvious trolls?

Some brought the Kona up so I assume you plan on childishly attacking them as well?

You've got to be like 12-year-old.... You've got to be.....

Magic 8 Ball | July 21, 2019

Yeah, the tag team schtick is plain as day.

Magic 8 Ball | July 21, 2019

@raqball You are being completely disingenuous if you don't get why there is so much push back on fish. Your choice of who you hitched your wagon to is just making you more of a target.

Magic 8 Ball | July 21, 2019

Thread was on track and good until fish decided to bring another personal beef here that has nothing to do with spoilers.

raqball | July 21, 2019

@Magic I've hitched my wagon to no one... I'll gladly meet you or anyone else if they happen to be in the PDX area.. I met FISHEV, he has a Tesla and he has that stupid adapter? Whoop-de-doo... He did come across as a nice and friendly person in real life.

Maybe if you and the other 3 or 4 stop constantly attacking others we would see that we all have much more in common than KB commandoes want to believe...

Push back on his all you want, I certainly don't care but I also don't see a flip out reason all because he mentioned sending his adapter back to get a spoiler...

Magic 8 Ball | July 21, 2019

@raqball Attacks on TESLA are attacks on those that care about TESLA. Those that throw stones........................

Get a clue

raqball | July 21, 2019

Magic 8 Ball | July 21, 2019

He mentioned the stupid adapter in passing. You and the others who flipped out over it derailed the thread and made it all about the adapter, not him. If you can't see that then I can't help you to do so.....

Magic 8 Ball | July 21, 2019

This is simple, if you don't say things that are unwarranted attacks on TESLA you will not get slammed.

You are being completely disingenuous if you claim to not be aware of the history of the adapter disruption. It has been going on for weeks now.

raqball | July 21, 2019

Well he said he is sending it back so maybe he won't need to mention it again.. I personally don't care if he complains about it as it is pretty expensive and non working at the moment...

But lets get back to the spoilers, okay?

I like mine and think it makes the rear end look. much better..

I will say the tech told me that they are having a manufacturing issue with them and are having fit issues. They had to try 3 different ones on mine before they got one that fit the lid properly...

Magic 8 Ball | July 21, 2019

Fine that you don't care about his whining but why are you pushing back so hard on those that do?

Magic 8 Ball | July 21, 2019

Your claim of not having your stake in fish does not ring true.

Magic 8 Ball | July 21, 2019

Hopefully I won't get flagged for my naughty shakespeare ripoff.

raqball | July 21, 2019

@Magic had he written a long anti chademo response I'd be in complete agreement with you. He didn't; and I took his mention of it to be in passing and that he would use the refund to get as spoiler...

I responded because of the tag team comment which was obviously directed at me..

As I said before I will push back and defend myself when you all attempt to discredit, attack, belittle and name call me... We can easily get along if you all would cease with that garbage..

Try treating people with a little respect even if you disagree with their posts...

FISHEV | July 21, 2019

"If so, it would be a complete waste of money to accessorize it"@Lonestar10_1999

I think it will pay for itself in making a cooler looking car to sell. Same for tint, wheel caps, ceramic, clear bra.

It will stand out in ads and in show.
