Is this to correct a potential issue with Tesla's equipment or to prevent problems due to faulty or degraded outlets and/or wiring ie NOT Tesla's equipment?
I wonder how this works? Is this going to be a thermal fuse that sits between the end of the UMC and the plug adapter? If so, we'll only need one per UMC.
Or is each plug adapter going to have a thermal fuse? In my case, I have something like 4 or 5 adapters, not including the J1772.
I have the NEMA 5-15, 10-30, 14-50, 6-50 and J1772 adapters. Agreed - will they need to replace all but the J1772 adapter? That seems expensive.
Maybe it's an adapter to the 14-50 Nema receptacle...

@oildeathspiral - Since they don't seem to be changing the design, I would say just a general safety precaution. All they're doing is adding a thermal fuse to the adapter such that if it gets too hot - FOR WHATEVER REASON - it will quit charging. A smart move that I bet they're wishing they'd thought of from the get go. Live and learn. At least they're changing everybody's out for free!
@AmpedRealtor - Coverup? Seems a bit extreme for a few melted adapters. I'm sure there are some failed adapters, but it's far more likely the NEMA connector wires were not tightened enough causing very high heat in the connection, melting the adapter. It's almost trivial to properly test the adapter is manufactured correctly. It's quite difficult for Tesla to know if a NEMA receptacle is properly wired, the wires are sized properly, etc, etc.
The last software update helps with some of these problems with the detection of unusually low voltages under load.
I'm glad Tesla is improving the adapters and even better that they are replacing them. Not sure any other company would be as proactive.
AmpedRealtor, I love your contributions. But if there really is a design problem with the adapters, couldn't we just use the word "spin" instead of "coverup?"
@TeslaTap, I don't think it is on the supply side where the issue is. I had my first UMC have lots of heat damage and had it replaced. I thought I had allowed the cable to pull to much on the adaptor end. So when I got the second one I used a rubber tarp strap to keep all the weight off of it. I also checked the outlet to be sure it was fine. Everything appears good on that end. When I watch the voltage and current supplied to the car it is very stable.
Just this past week I went out to the car and it was limiting current. I looked at the pins where the adaptor connects to the cable and the same pin that turned brown and melted part of the UMC side last time was brown and melted again. My personal opinion is that the pins are too small for that amount of current and I am very surprised they are not copper as well.

@Theresa - before the car I had three 240 V jobs done at my house... 2 out the 3 jobs terminals were not tightened. One of the failures was done by an utility electrician. I would never plug in an outlet that has not been verified. Largest cause of house fires are electrical problems.
I am not absolving the UMC, but don't assume your house wiring is up to the task - have it verified. I was pleased that with my recent solar installation the city inspector checked every single terminal to be tight.
It's only the adapter. This same bloomberg article has two posts both saying the chargers are being replaced. The article only says redesigned adapters will be mailed out.
I just got a few more adapters a couple days ago. I now have all of the adapters, NEMA 14-50, 6-50, 14-30, 10-30, and the 15A and 20A 120v adapters. I was never happy with how the adapters connected. In my garage I was limited to the NEMA 14-30 adapter via my dryer outlet until I installed the HPWC. Supposedly at some point they are supposed to come out and replace the fuses in my HPWC though I've never had an issue charging at 80A. I've only used the NEMA 14-50 adapter a couple of times.
Just bumping the NEMA 14-30 adapter would cause a fault.
Is it possible for the OP to make this a private thread?
It maybe coverup/spin, but that is ok. The last thing we (& Tesla) needs is another fire controversy.
If the original UMC was a bad design or they had a bad supplier, so be it. Things happen, and they are fixing it proactively.

I use a HPWC daily not a problem. All of you lauding your savings at using your portable cord kit for daily wall charging are seeing why it is better with fewer plug together parts. Adaptors equal potential loose connections ! Daily usage of push together parts raises the risk of heat related problems!
Most cases plug in appliances a not installed and uninstalled daily. This is what causes heat problems the female connector looses its grip after repeated use and things get hot with loose parts.
I am a Hardware man we sell wiring devices . Plug fires are common occurrences . Be sure you have tight fitting parts that don't run hot. Arching equals fires eventually! Be safe don't use over heated or compromised parts. Does your cord run very warm ? You are the one who is responsible to keep an eye on this issue in your garage. Be safe !
I don't understand the furor. They are treating this as a recall. No one has died. They are taking care of it- on top of the software patch- with hardware.

And since the other adapters have lower amperage, less likelihood of failure. There are probably very few NEMA 14-30 in use, so maybe they do not feel the need to replace those now.
BTW, just a head's up...be sure to check/know the duty cycle/rating of your wall outlet, especially a NEMA 14-50 or the like. They are not rated for many thousands of cycles, and the spring tension can fade after a while. FWIW, I have 2 NEMA 14-50 adapters. I leave 1 in the receptacle in my garage, and 1 in the black tote bag for the UMC. If I hit the road, I disconnect at the connection between the UMC and the adapter, and leave the adapter in the wall. Essentially NO duty cycles on the receptacle (...yes, duty cycles on the UMC connector, but TM can replace this if it fails without a call to an electrician).

Elon's hot, his crappy adapters could melt and i'd still want to tap that.
@AmpedRealtor...let me let u in on electricity 101....if u have bad wiring, one of the key spots overheating occurs is within the cable plug/adapt or even if the adapter is perfectly ok. Try this experiment....plug in a 240 appliance like a clothing dryer into 110V outlet either directly or via extension cord. Then check how fast the 240 cable adapter heats up...it heats up pretty fast though the 240 adapter is perfectly ok.

On TeslaMotorsClub.com, you'll find photos that clearly implicate the adapters themselves and exonerate the recepticals. Not to say there are no wiring issues with NEMA 14-50 receptacles, but they weren't the source of these meltdowns. There are suggestions that small debris, even pet hair, could increase the connection's resistance and create the problem. Also, there are posts suggesting the latching mechanism may get deformed and then become an obstacle to full seating of the adapter on the UMC cable.
I'm not having any problems with this, but the pins and sleeve connections on the adapters AND the UMC cables are noticeably small compared with the NEMA 14-50 slab-like pins. They may not be very tolerant of debris or contamination, or partial insertion/seating...
