New Firmware V 4.3

New Firmware V 4.3

Just installed V4.3 with two new features:

- you can now set the time to start charging (Yea!)
- climate control adjusted to be a bit warmer on all settings

Thanks, Tesla!

shop | March 15, 2013

From what I can gather, it always was charging, it is just that the range calculation was reading low due to the current temperature. I always thought their algorithms were wrong since the car generates its own heat when driving (excess heat from the motor is used to warm the battery and the battery itself generates some heat when driving). Nice to see they finally took into account that the car will actually be driving when it is, you know, being driven :-)

alfafoxtrot1 | March 15, 2013

Shop - you are correct. I should add that once the download was complete, my range "jumped" 16 miles. In other words, it suddenly showed the results of the charging that had occured.

DFibRL8R | March 15, 2013

@JZ13
I just found the prompt to update this am Vin# 3983.

bsimoes | March 15, 2013

Those of us in North America are almost into spring. We have a few seasons ahead of us before we have to confront winter charging times, which should allow Tesla some time to work on end-charging times. From what I understand, it isn't such a concern when the ambient outdoor temperature is reasonable for regen, etc.

edavis008 | March 15, 2013

Got my notice today that 4.3 is ready for installation tonight. My VIN is 57XX.

gasnomo | March 15, 2013

Still nothing, I'm VIN 45XX

mbcaffe | March 15, 2013

nothing yet. VIN 3798

mal42north | March 15, 2013

still waiting VIN 3998

GLO | March 15, 2013

Got mine his AM. VIN 3802

brandtlings | March 15, 2013

Updated this morning... vin 6706

NKYTA | March 15, 2013

:-( Not updated, VIN 18xx

cpetrush | March 15, 2013

Still nothing. VIN 4020. Can someone plot this trend. Seems like higher VINs are getting it sooner.

TeslaModelSOwner | March 15, 2013

VIN 54XX no update yet

gan1812 | March 15, 2013

Got Mine yesterday, VIN 6654

JZ13 | March 15, 2013

Very odd. 18xx no update yet 6xxx has received update. I'm 54xx no update yet. Are these rollouts totally random? I wonder if geography is at play. Maybe they spread the rollout's across the county to get a sample of feedback based on weather, topography, etc.

garyrudolph | March 15, 2013

VIN 67xx got it today. I wonder if its relate to how long the car is parked/stationary.

Mark Z | March 15, 2013

After update the AC fan speed is lower and how can I get out of Eco mode?

jchangyy | March 15, 2013

VIN 54xx. no update. although I think someone mentioned a glitch with car door after install.

Does the 4.3v only contain update for the charge time set? I won't be using that feature since I have a flat rate of 11c/kwh in Santa Clara.

Electron | March 15, 2013

Jchangyy - do you have solar?

bfranks273 | March 15, 2013

The update also has a tweak to the heater, it is now much warmer for a given setting. Mark, I think having charging set to range mode also affects the heater, see if you have that set and return it to normal charge mode. (I wonder if the order follows the wacky delivery order, like its the order cars were entered into the system when they rolled out?)

weeandthewads | March 15, 2013

I wonder if the HPWC owners are getting the updates first or is it random?

mkh1437 | March 15, 2013

I just received the update today. I was one of the last to receive the 4.1 update, and I do not have a HPWC. I am a Sig S VIN 871.

Curmudgeon | March 15, 2013

VIN 3812 No Update Yet.

Prasad B | March 15, 2013

@jchangyy, when you say you have a flat rate of 11c/kw, is it because you have solar or you have a special plan with your provider? I have PG&E (Milpitas), and they don't have a fixed rate that is independent of the amount of usage - they start at 11c/kw, but once you cross the baseline (around 300 or so kwh), the price starts increasing.

Prasad B | March 15, 2013

@Mark Z, I don't have 4.3, but you should be able to go to Console/Settings/Vehicle (if I remember), and turn off Range Mode

Alex K | March 15, 2013

@rtesta@pacbell.net | MARCH 15, 2013: I wonder if the HPWC owners are getting the updates first or is it random?

Got the HPWC yesterday and installed it, but no 4.3 software yet.

Mark Z | March 15, 2013

@bfranks273: Found it, was looking for Eco Mode on the vehicle settings. Forgot that it is called Range Mode.

While the number of Eco Mode fan speeds seemed to increase, the volume of air appeared less.

On regular mode the AC really puts out. I don't remember a fan sipped of "11" but it's there!

DouglasR | March 15, 2013

For all we know, the rollout could be based on your IP address.

Brian H | March 15, 2013

DR;
Sequential by IP address! Gahhh! \:(

gldlcks55 | March 15, 2013

My MS 60kw is 3 weeks old. Ive had no real problems except for a passenger rear door that would not open from the outside when I chose the child lock feature. Today I received the 4.3 update notice on my screen and opted for a 2 AM update. As soon as I punched it in, I received a yellow warning sign that something was wrong and to bring the vehicle in for service. After a few seconds the screen went dark and the vehicle was not driveable.
I called Tesla and reached the Menlo Park Service Center. I described what happened. Brian told me that I may inadvertently punched in the update now button. I was told to wait two hours.
It's been four hours and the car has not woken up yet. The service center tried coaching me into rebooting by pressing down the two center buttons with no success. They are sending a ranger tomorrow Saturday morning.

60 kw MS

DouglasR | March 15, 2013

Brian, all I'm saying is that it's fruitless to complain that "I have VIN xxx, but haven't received my firmware." We don't know the basis for the rollout order, whether alphabetical by last name, geographical, IP address, or BMI.

jbherman | March 15, 2013

3319...no update yet, but my parcel shelf was delivered today :^)

nvjx | March 15, 2013

I started the update process at about 4:30 pm PST. Anyone know how long it takes to update?

cpetrush | March 15, 2013

BMI? Body mass index? Hahaha

kickgas | March 15, 2013

Got update this morning. Vin 42XX. 85KW in No. Va. No problems noted.

polongstreet | March 15, 2013

VIN 4580 85KW NORTHEN CALIF NOT YET

jchangyy | March 15, 2013

@prasad and @electron...I don't have solar. My electricity is through Santa Clara valley power--municipal.

First 300kwh is $0.09 ans subsequent usage is $0.11 per kwh. No upper limit or third tier. Only 2 levels from what I've seen on my bill.

They also have the Time Of Use option but its only cheaper by 1.6 cents cheaper per kwh. It also changes w season, etc.

Out current monthly bill is around $80 per month on a new home, 2000 sq ft. I'm sure my bill will double w my tesla.

Electron | March 15, 2013

@jchangyy

Amazing, just around the corner from you and paying upwards of $0.34 per kwh once
the tiers kick in from PGE.

Brian H | March 15, 2013

DR;
Ya, I know, I was just responding to the imaginativeness of your suggestion. ;p

Brian H | March 15, 2013

gldlcks;
If at first you don't succeed, ...

nvjx | March 15, 2013

No problems with the update. Everything is working fine.

GoTeslaChicago | March 16, 2013

Update scheduled for 2:00 AM. last nite. Saw message this morning saying we were unable to complete your update. Will reschedule again later. No schedule option showing.

Bummer.

Any ideas why?
Happen to anyone else?

hsadler | March 16, 2013

@Electron

You should be able to get the E9 rate since you have the Tesla. I believe it is a TOU, so charging at night will be much cheaper.
Talk to PG&E about your options. Or check it out at

http://www.pge.com/myhome/environment/whatyoucando/electricdrivevehicles...

awaite | March 16, 2013

No one should change their PG&E rate without first evaluating their use and PG&E was not helpful aside from emailing me the various rate plans. Maybe I'll start a new thread on this but to make the point, the E-1(flat) rate was actually cheaper than E-9 (time of use) for me. Even if they tell you TOU will be better, do the math.

hnashif | March 16, 2013

@Electron

Before I installed NEMA 14-50, I called PG&E's Buildings and Renovations at 877-743-7782. On the same call I requested adding 50 A to my house and switching my rate to E-9 A.

Electron | March 16, 2013

I'm getting solar this summer, plus PGE is replacing e9 with something new, so I haven't worked out what the best option is yet for my usage.

Alex K | March 16, 2013

@ GoTeslaChicago | MARCH 16, 2013: Saw message this morning saying we were unable to complete your update. Will reschedule again later. No schedule option showing.

Check the version number to see if it actually did an update. I had this happen previously on the 4.2 update. But it appeared that the update did complete, as I had the functionality and the proper version number was displayed when I touched the Tesla logo. No problems with the 4.3 update, though.

jat | March 16, 2013

@awaite - that is the case for me with Georgia Power's EV rate -- you get $.019/kWh midnight to 7am, but it more than doubles the rate during the peak time so I lose far more with everything else than I save charging a LEAF and the Model S.

docdac | March 16, 2013

I was supposed to get the 4.3 update at 2:00am last night, but today it still shows v4.2. No messages or explanation. No apparent changes. I don't think it installed the 4.3 update. Has this happened to anyone else? VIN 1986

sbryant | March 16, 2013

Same situation as docdac. No messages, no version change, no new features. But the timer clock on the top bar of the 17-inch display went away, presumably indicating the timer function did its part at 2 a.m.????? Even rebooted the display, with no change.
